I have to say the coverage of Charleston this week was abyslmal considering its tier 1 status. I know Amelia Island is the same but Eurosport dont tend to have week long coverage of Tier 2 events. My question is do you think the coverage is getting worse? I remember there was a period from Leipzig to the end of season championships when there was a tournament broadcast week long every week. Also the coverage of antwerp and Aus Open has been fantastic. But after that it has become poor, with Indian Wells finals being shown as replays and trasmition of Miami being cut off halfway through. Also Charleston was also poor.

Oh yeah, I definitely think it is getting worse - even from 2 years ago. They just put utter trash on that I guarantee noone is watching. I can understand when it is big events, but to show repeats of truck racing and who-knows football is detestable when there is world-class tennis on - which I am presuming they have the rights to. What really gets on my tits though is how they have really good coverage of a tournament during the week which live, and then at the weekend to show an hour of a recorded final. Where does that logic come from? (this is a sports dedicated channel after all!)

To me we are paying the price for having around-the-clock coverage of the Grand Slams. This is great, but tennis does exist outside the grand slams - something Eurosport seems to have forgotten of late!

Eurosport cover far too many trivial sports. They don't seem able to prioritise sensibly between different events at all.

A company like SKY covering minor sports like fishing is okay, because they have several channels, but Eurosport only have the one, so tennis coverage is continually being squeezed.

Of course the French open coverage is problematic too, as they often cut into it, or cut it short with other sports.

The reason I am asking is I am thinking about sending a petiton of complaint to Eurosport requesting better coverage, becuase I think it can be done. Not so much so with tier 2 tours outside of Europe, but deifnatly with other tournaments. Also I feel the fact they never show Live finals unless they are in the morning or late at night is bad.

They always have had better coverage of European tournaments - except where ARD/ZDF had the rights. I expect they are limited by their US suppliers and the clock in their US coverage.
However, it would be interesting to see their audience figures. They are tending to avoid Williams sister walk-over matches in the tournaments they do cover, perhaps because they think the bloodshed is putting the viewers off. Its also noticeable that their commentators are noting that the Williams winning is becoming monotonous. They/we have also had a series of pretty uncompetitive matches, including quite a few finals , when they do cover tournaments so perhaps they are reacting to lack of excitement on the tour (look at the scores of many of the last years finals...) Add the loss of Sandrine, Mary P and Amelie's injuries, the lack of a top German player post Anke, the loss of ASV and imagine what has happened to their French, German and Spanish audiences. Its unlikely that they have a Belgian, Italian or Russian audience to compensate. Finally, the European players they like - Danni, Patty, Anna, Jelena, Elena B are not performing particularly well this year. Net result - I suspect tennis is getting a lower priority.
The answer pray for Patty, Justine, Amelie, Danni, Elena and Kim to start winning, some youngster (vera?) to jump forward and Germany to find a good player and send thanks unto Justine for starting the process yesterday.

im glad they FINALLY have the guts to put on at least ONE match every week (remember last year we never got coverage from quite a lot of tourneys!) but

I AM STILL PISSED THAT I NEVER SAW THE END OF THE MIAMI FINAL :fiery::fiery:

i was all excited when the were to show it the monday morning instead then we got a message in the corner of the screen saying the action had been cancelled which stayed there for all of 1 minute

Still doesn't compare favourably with coverage of the ATP tour, Vutt. For the masters series events, Sky cover 6-8 hours per day live with extended highlights later on. At least one alternative match is almost always available to choose between.

The best coverage is by BBCi for Wimbledon, and Sky for the US open.

Hm! 6-8 hours :worship: Yeah maybe you're right.

But try explain how unhappy we are with Eurosport WTA coverage to our fellow Americans. ;)

They always have had better coverage of European tournaments - except where ARD/ZDF had the rights.
Indeed, and much of that boils down to the time zone difference. They can't get the afternoon slots for live tennis that they are likely to prefer on weekdays, and they are not going to show live tennis at 4 AM when they are basically shut down. Obviously, the coverage of regular American events is going to be worse than what they can offer of European tournaments when they themselves are in the driving seat.

I believe there's also some complicated technical issue in regards to the differences between NTSC and PAL that may play a part. The picture quality always seems poorer when it's US-born.

Excellent analysis, by the way. You touch on the real sensitive issue of declining pan-European interest in a Tour that is very much dominated by America right now - and has been so for the last 3 years.

The coverage of events is pretty much the same this year as it has always been, bascially, we will not get the final of Berlin when we have live matches in the week, we will get more live action from the Italian Open. It is the same every year, and the same complaints, they have never given Charleston and Amelia Island very good coverage, and I doubt they will in the future! Personally I think Eurosport do a bloody good job for a channel u don't have to specifically subscribe too!!

I'd rather have Eurosport like this than no Eurosport at all.

Without our ES, we would have virtually no WTA Tennis on our TVs.
