I saw it announced on Yahoo. This is terrible! I really liked TNT's coverage, and ESPN has the absolute worst coverage of slams. They will show fewer hours of coverage and none of it will be live! GRRRRRRRRRRRRr

ESPN, Wimbledon agree on 4-year deal

April 14, 2003 BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) -- ESPN reached a four-year agreement to televise Wimbledon from 2003-06. ESPN and ESPN2 will broadcast nearly 120 hours of programming from the All England Club starting June 23, the network said Monday. Coverage will feature one men's and one women's semifinal :( . NBC will show the finals, in addition to other coverage. The addition of Wimbledon means ESPN airs three of the four Grand Slam events.

ESPN will show Wimbledon every day from 9:00am until 2:00 LIVE and until 4:00 (which is around 10:00 in London) on tape. What else do you people want?? Only the matches from the Aussie Open are on tape and that's because Melbourne is HOURS ahead of American EST. Even then, both finals are live. :) NBC will show two semis and both finals LIVE

ESPN has just as good coverage as TNT and USA have/had though their commentators are pretty awful.

As for only showing Americans . . . that doesn't bother me at all but if it bothers any of you . . . TOUGH ;)

what Linnie said...

the hours are great, commendable but WHO will they show and WHO will be commentating is the point. I prefer TNT because they had Nav and Mary... those two are the best in the biz and at least TNT switches to other courts and show a little bit of a match while ESPN shows other courts in between sets and take so long that you miss the first game or two of the next set.

wow, lots of complaining...you know ESPN is showing one womens semi and one mens semis live and nbc gets the other ones...just like HBO did and just like TNT did...nothing different. HBO and TNT may have showed all semis EVENTUALLY but they only showed ONE live...obviously nbc gets the showcase match.

i dont recall TNT having coverage at 7 in the morning as it's only 12 in london right? do any matches start at noon? if they did start at 7 they bullshitted until 8....the center court matches usually start when coverage comes on tv

you guys gotta accept change once in a while...a lot of people moaned about TNT getting wimbledon when HBO did a wonderful job (myself included) and realized TNT did a fine job itself.

i'm certainly not going to complain about 120 hours of coverage. good lord

TNT always opened up 7AM Eastern, and it was great. Maybe no show court matches were on, but they at least showed outside courts, along with a preview of the big matches.

TNT always went over their time, and it was basically complete coverage from beginning of the day session until there were no matches left.

We can hardly say that for ESPN, who love to show taped matches over live ones, and as soon as the top of the hour comes, they're gone.

Ahh, here we go:

Tennis Channel Sets Sights On Fed Cup As First Telecast

By Tennis Week
04/15/2003

The Tennis Channel has set its sights on a star-studded launch. The Tennis Channel has targeted the United States first-round Fed Cup tie scheduled for April 26-27th as its first telecast.

The United States will host the Czech Republic in the first-round tie, which will be played at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. Top-ranked Serena Williams, third-ranked Venus Williams, Meghann Shaughnessy and Alexandra Stevenson form the U.S. squad captained by Billie Jean King.

The tie marks the first time Serena and Venus have represented the United States in an international team competition since Venus won the gold medal in singles and teamed with Serena to strike gold in doubles on the American team King captained at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games. The star power of the Williams sisters makes the tie an appealing event for the Tennis Channel's debut.

The Tennis Channel has scheduled a conference call with the media tomorrow in which Channel president and founder Steve Bellamy, chairman and CEO David Meister are expected to announce the Fed Cup tie as the Channel's first telecast. In addition, Bellamy and Meister also plan to discuss distribution, programming and tournament rights deals for the 24-hour cable television network.

The Tennis Channel initially planned a tentative launch date of December, 2002, but during a series of interviews with Tennis Week during and after the U.S. Open, Bellamy amended that launch date to the first quarter of 2003.

In December, The Tennis Channel announced it acquired the rights to telecast several 2003 Tennis Masters Series events including Monte Carlo (April 14-20), Rome (May 5-11), Hamburg (May 12-18), Madrid (Oct. 13-19) and Paris (Oct. 27-Nov. 2).

The delay of the Channel's launch means there will not be any live coverage of this week's Monte Carlo event in the United States. The only American coverage of the tournament will be an ESPN2 two-hour tournament wrap-up scheduled for April 21st 4-6 a.m.

I seem to remember everyone complaining about TNT and Jim Courier and so on constantly last summer and now everyone's talking like TNT was the greatest thing. I think everyone on this board just likes to complain!! ;-)

As a current employee at ESPN Studios (specifically working live shows for ESPNews), I received the following e-mail at work:

"For the first time, ESPN has acquired rights to Wimbledon beginning this June. ESPN and ESPN2 will now present to fans more than 500 hours of tennis in 2003. The wide-ranging agreement also provides for Wimbledon coverage on ESPN Classic, ESNEWS and ESPN.com, as well as rights to video-on-demand, interactive TV, broadband, ESPN Deportes and ESPN HD."

Though an employee, ESPN's tennis coverage has honestly been not tremendous, but money talks. Hopefully, it'll go reasonably well....

Maybe on the men's side...the top American woman love grass. Venus, Serena, Lindsay...they have had their best results at Wimbledon [besides the US Open for Serena].
