View Full Version : What was your fave's best match she played even though she lost?

I don't think we often think about how good are faves compete in matches even though they might have lost the match.

So what are some of the greatest matches your fave has competed in but ended up losing?

I think three of Martina Navratilova's most outstanding matches that come to mind are her 84 Aussie semifinal loss to Sukova and her respective 85 French and U.S. Open losses to Evert and Mandlikova.

I think in all three matches that although she lost, she fought probably harder than in any match in order to win. But on each day, she faced an even more determined player and the best woman won.

I think my current fave, Lindsay Davenport, had one of her best losses to Serena Williams a few years ago in the U.S. Open when she lost that three-set thriller at night in the quarterfinals.

It was definitely one match Linds had Serena on the ropes, but as what usually happens between the two of them, Serena found the way to win.

Any more?

Even though she lost, I like Justine's Amelia Island final against Venus.
She played outstanding tennis until the choke at 6-2 4-0 40-15.
After that, she still fought to stay close and still believed in her chances, which was great to watch.

Probably the best match that my favourite Steffi Graf played that she never won was... Wimbledon 1984 when I beat her in the fourth round 3-6 6-3 9-7.

Good stuff! It really was...

steffi tried everything at the french 92 but I think that exactly costed her the match.
steffi in good (mental) conditions doesn't scream between points!

wimbledon 1999, quarterfinals venus vs. graf. it wasn't the most brilliant match but it was so dramatic because of the numerous rain delays. i believe the match took some 6 or 7 hours to complete. venus held her own against steffi and there were some really good and exciting points. my favorite point was match point because when venus dumped her backhand into the net, graf was euphoric, quickly squealing and jumping in delight! she had advanced to the semifinals and she had beaten venus as well (in a match that could've gone to venus).

Amélie's loss to Venus in last year's U S Open semi-final. I love watching that match, the standard of tennis was so high and you didn't know right until the end who was going to win. Even though Amélie lost 6/4 in the third set, she played so well! :D

Hmm... I've only seen Lena lose a handful of matches, and she was awful in all of them.

I guess I'd say Fed Cup vs. Kveta then... 8-6 in the 3rd.

When Monica was younger, she didn't lose matches that she played well in. In recent years, I think of against Martina at the 2000 Chase Championships, or against Serena at the 2001 Canadian Open.

Arantxa's Wimbledon final 1995, losing 7-5 in the third to Steffi after a 20 minute game at 5-5.

ITA!! Arantxa played brilliantly in that match! Everyone thought that Steffi would just steamroll past Arantxa and claim the crown but little did they know...Arantxa came to net, hit ACES against Steffi, hit many winners..she was up 5-4 in the 3rd before that 20 minute game in which Arantxa didn't serve a single DF in that game, and was many times literally inches away from winning that 5-5 game...sigh Steffi was just too good and showed why she was the queen of Wimbledon..

monica's loss to steffi in the 95 usopen final had a set point and thought she had an ace to close it out, and she even rebounded to BAGEL graf in the second set but lost the match-- heartbreaker.

monica's loss to hingis in the 2000 chase championships... great match, but she didn't have the energy in the last few games.

monica's loss to martina in the aussie semi's last year. its sad to think that this match may have been her greatest chance to win a slam the last few years.

of course, the 98 french final to arantxa. she has only lost 3 times to arantxa in her career, and one of them just had to be here... it was sad that she didn't have enough and that her dad had recently passed away.

home depot championships against venus. led in both sets, played well but venus was too strong when it mattered.

loss to juju at wimbledon last year and dubai this year (even though i didnt see it).

loss to jen in australia 2 years ago (up a set and a break) and her loss to her in miami last year...

BUT, this doesn't compare to all the great matches that she has won...

2/6 6/3 5/7 !! It was great match for Mary!!
Linds was just too skilful!!

ok, i dont want to bring up bad memories for me and all, but i'm sorry, mary should have won that match had it not been for that call, i mean, it was match point and she had won it, and i remember seeing it and was so upset, i was like, dammit! but still, wat a great match, mary was hitting the ball so hard and the two were matching each other power for power, just an amazing display of true pure power.

Wow, so many great posts and great memories in this thread! Some posts (especially yours, AgassiGirl16!) almost made me cry! I wish I hadn't used up all my rep points already today; I would blanket this entire thread with them for everybody, because we have all experienced those bittersweet moments where our faves play great, even nobly, but still fail.

:hearts: to everybody who shared here some of the anguishing but still wonderful moments stored forever in their hearts :wavey:

For me, threads like this, with everyone sharing these heartfelt memories, represent the height of what a message board community can be. Thanks!

Kim against Jennifer at RG 2001. Actually for my favourite overall Kim match (win or not) it's close between that and her win against Serena at the year-end tournament last year but at RG both women played really really well so I loved the match even though I didn't like the result!

Anna - losing to Hingis 6-4 in the third of the Hamburg quarter-finals in 2000. Anna played a great first set and in the third set she was way down and came back, but eventually Hingis closed it out. A really nice match. Also the 2002 San Diego semi-finals against Dokic.

Daniela - losing in straight sets to Serena in the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year. The score looked relatively one-sided, but it was much closer than it indicates. The first set was high quality stuff.

I agree that Mary vs Davenport was a great match, but that was PAINFUL to watch! Wasn't it agonizing seeing the ball go TWO INCHES out on match point and Mary on the verge of tears, shaking her head, when there was a rain delay shortly after?

Some less painful losses where Mary lost were her 1998 US Open match against Venus (great second set!) and the 1999 Canadian Open semifinal (which she really should have won; she had 41 winners and 18 ues).

I also agree that the 1998 French final was a great match, but that was also a very painful loss. So it's not my favourite! Did anyone see the match at the 1998 WTA Champs where Steffi beat Monica? I've always wanted to see that match.

Do any of the older posters here remember much about the 1970 Wimbledon final in which Margaret Court beat Billie Jean in the final?

Was just reading about it and from what it said, both players were injured but went the distance.

From what I am reading, it sounds like it was Billie Jean's great match she played at Wimbledon even though she lost it.

As inspirational as the 98 French was for Monica, I never really thought that final was one of her best. She fought hard, but made a lot more errors than she had in any of the six previous matches.

If anything, Monica has had better matches that that one in terms of losing the battle.

irma
Apr 17th, 2003, 08:51 PM
wait a minute the match I named above is far from my favorite I hate it and steffi played crap but she was trying and screaming like an idiot

so she competed well in fighting ways not in quality ways!

Jakeev
Apr 17th, 2003, 08:59 PM
Hey Irma do you think Steffi's loss to Monica in the 92 French final was one of her best losing efforts? To me that is still one of the great French Open finals.

irma
Apr 17th, 2003, 09:11 PM
like I said it was in fighting ways as she was screaming all the time (even when that's a bad thing. it was still a prove of efforts)

other then that 66 unforced errors are 66 unforced errors and since I saw that match that day and know when most of these errors where made. from quality level from steffi's view it was blah :o (steffi thought the same about it. that 92 wimbledon interview after the first round where they asked if she had changed her view about the match already was priceless :D)
