Goolagong Cawley names Fed Cup team
Friday, 28 March, 2003

MELBOURNE, - Optus Australian Fed Cup Captain Evonne Goolagong Cawley today announced the Fed Cup line-up for Australia's first round clash against 2002 Fed Cup finalist, Spain, in Tarragona (April 26-27).

Nicole Pratt [ranked 53 in singles], Alicia Molik [89], Rennae Stubbs [ranked 3 in doubles] and Optus Achiever Squad member, Samantha Stosur [ranked 162 in singles] will attempt to claim victory in the opening round of the 2003 Fed Cup World Group competition.

Spain currently leads the two nations' head-to-head tally 6-2 and while it will be a tough assignment on the red clay at Tarragona, Goolagong Cawley is confident this team will be able to match it with the Spaniards.

"Alicia and Nicole have displayed some great form in Miami recently with Nicole advancing to the third round after defeating No.19 seed Elena Dementieva and Alicia securing a fourth round berth after scoring determined victories over the likes of World No.8 Daniela Hantuchova and Russian Elena Likhovtseva," Goolagong Cawley said.

"The players will spend the next three weeks competing in claycourt tournaments, which is the ideal opportunity for them to once again acclimatise themselves to this surface."

Meanwhile, after making her Fed Cup debut as a team member at last year's opening round Tie against Belgium, Samantha Stosur will be hoping to earn a call-up to play in her very first Fed Cup rubber.

"Sam's made great progress since April 2002," Goolagong Cawley said. "When we played Belgium last year she was ranked 268 in singles, now she is ranked 162 and in the process has defeated one of Spain's greatest Fed Cup players, Conchita Martinez, in the first round of this year's Australian Open."

In accordance with ITF rules, nations must nominate their four-member Team ten days prior to the commencement of the Tie. Spain's team is yet to be announced but is likely to include Conchita Martinez [26], Magui Serna [42], Virginia Ruana Pascual [41] and Cristina Torrens Volero [80].
