Serena Williams named WTA Tour 2002 Player of the Year

March 24, 2003
MIAMI (Ticker) - To no one's surprise, least of all herself, Serena Williams on Monday was named 2002 WTA Tour Player of the Year.

The World No. 1 was honored after a brilliant season during which she won a tour-high eight titles, including three straight Grand Slam crowns, and rose to the top of the rankings. She owned a 56-5 match record last year, going 17-2 against top-10 foes.

"Well, I pretty much figured I should win that after I won the U.S. Open," the 21-year-old American said after her fourth-round win at the Nasdaq-100 Open.

Williams was presented with the award during an on-court ceremony at the Tier I tournament. Also, Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia received the Most Improved Player award.

Hantuchova started 2002 ranked 38th and rose to No. 8 in the world. She captured her first career title at the Tier I event at Indian Wells, reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and helped Slovakia win its first-ever Federation Cup crown.
