Jan 16th, 2002, 01:54 PM
All the best tomorrow Sveta !!!!!

for one thing she won't be overpowered by Iroda, she can match everything thats comes to her.

Jan 17th, 2002, 03:35 PM
ouch, bad luck Sveta, she matched Iroda at start but her serve wasn't good today, only 50% ish in.

Sveta's groundies were big though had Iroda on ropes but went for too much.

Jan 21st, 2002, 05:04 AM

Feb 27th, 2002, 09:40 AM
Where is Sveta now

Mar 6th, 2002, 01:13 AM
Hikaru said Sveta is world junior number 1.
Wasn't Kournikova junior no.1?
Wasn't Lina junior no.1? (OK maybe shes too young to use as a good example)
(Was Elena D. ever junior no.1? I don't actually know)

Do you see a theme warming up here??
Just because a player is junior number1, it doesn't mean she'll be any good on the pro tour!!!

I'm not saying she'll be crap, I'm just saying 'Don't count your chickens before they hatch'.
What that actually means is. Don't got too carried away by saying shes the next big thing. Both Anna and Elena D. have crumbled under the pressure and expectation of people saying that!!

Mar 6th, 2002, 02:09 PM
omg, how did I miss this thread? :o

Well, I'm happy to say I saw Sveta quite a bit in AO! I saw two of her qualy matches, and her two main draw matches, as well as a junior match!

I was quite the Sveta watcher in Melbourne! lol, she really impressed me, and made a fan of me :)

Go Sveta!!! I expect big things from you girl!

If she can keep her head above water, and not drown amidst the expectation and hoopla, then the sky's the limit :) :)
She has talent and knows how to use it!

Hikaru, I dont know what Sveta's plans are...but according to Eggy, she is propably getting ready for a major assault on the red clay season!

Mar 13th, 2002, 11:32 AM
Okay I'll wait for her. Hope she breaks a jinx that Russian never win tournaments. Go girl !!

Mar 13th, 2002, 11:54 AM
Sveta likes to play on clay and likes to be compared with ASV :). It helped with the interview once. But she has a weak point and that point is BH. If she improves it, she will be the player to watch.

Mar 13th, 2002, 12:01 PM
Sveta will be playing once clay starts, she's gonna use her tourns to play on the red stuff :)

Her BH has improved :)

Mar 14th, 2002, 06:45 PM
Iva's Fan,

Mercifully, I don't think there is too much hoopla around Sveta; mostly that is around Maria Sharapova because she is a Nick B. and IMG girl, and got to the Aus open final . So I think Sveta can improve at her own natural pace without being weighed down by premature expectations. Best of luck to her.

Mar 15th, 2002, 04:30 AM
I hope so :)

Mar 30th, 2002, 12:24 AM

Yes, Sveta plays Anna tomorrow.

Can she join the growing teenage "I Beat Anna" Club? I hope so! :wavey:
Good luck, Sveta! Don't back down! If you get behind, just hang in there! Anna may well help you later in the match with some double faults or 91 UEs. ;)

auntie janie
May 7th, 2002, 06:46 PM
Wow, Anna helped Sveta late in the match even more than I predicted -- she gave up altogether! :o

Don't let that detract from your sweet victory, Sveta! You did what you needed to do -- it worked -- you WON! :D :D :D

Now take it from here! :wavey:

May 7th, 2002, 07:02 PM

A poster at CNNSI said this is the first time that Sveta has won more than a one match in any WTA tournament -- if this is true, congrats to her for bursting through that second-round barrier today! :)

janie, I prefer to focus on the more positive - Sveta has NEVER lost in a WTA main draw first round. Long may that continue!

Good luck Sveta for the rest of the tourney... Terry, I'd love a Sveta v Vera final too, at least that'd break the Russian curse.

May 10th, 2002, 12:12 AM
EXCELLENT point, sartrista! :)

Now, I have been rooting for Sveta of course, but after reading her interview which Eggy kindly posted, I have now become a true fan. There is something so refreshing about a young player who says she spent her childhood riding her bike!
:D :hearts: :D :)

I am all in favor of either Elena B, Sveta or Vera breaking the Russian Curse this week. What a relief that will be! :)

May 10th, 2002, 01:35 AM
Good luck Sveta tomorrow :D Way to go girl!

May 10th, 2002, 08:41 AM
There is something so refreshing about a young player who says she spent her childhood riding her bike!

Janie, she didn`t ride it for her own pleasure ;) In fact she hate it since she was trained in a bycicle club. She was thought to continue the family`s business.

May 10th, 2002, 03:04 PM
Sveta lost 3-6 2-6 to Elena Bovina

bad luck Sveta :( but its been another good week, she's upto around 131.

best of luck in RG qualies now as I don't think she will play Madrid this yr.

best of luck Sveta :)

May 23rd, 2002, 04:22 PM
She lost in second round qualies as you all know by now to Lourdes Dominguez Lino    A tough match as Lourdes is former RG junior champ...I was so hoping for a big tournament here, but it wasnt to be :(

Oh well, still only 16...Im sure this time next year she'll be in the main draw on her own merit :) Looking forward to seeing her progress!

May 23rd, 2002, 04:28 PM

Jun 23rd, 2002, 12:25 AM
I don't know when this interview was done or if anyone's already posted it in this thread, but I've only just seen it and I always post an interview as and when I find them:

'How difficult was it to find courts to play on when you first started playing tennis?
Courts to find are easy if you have money. Free courts, you cannot find there. It's not like maybe here. I don't know how it works here but there you are always paying. You have to pay for everything. When I go to my city I pay for everything; club, courts, ball, coach, practice partner ... everything.

Does your federation help you out? Do they have a facility where you can practice?
No. My father, he pays for me for everything. The Russian Federation did send us here to play the team competition. I think it is very good that we came one week ago to practice before the tournament. So we have been here ... our team; boys and girls. We were together all the time so now we are like brothers and sisters and we are really good now. We played and won both titles so it was very good. They paid for us and will pay hospitality for Orange Bowl for me.

Growing up, your father helped you along. Did he start you in tennis?
All my family are cyclists. My father still coaches. My mother she was a very good cyclist. My brother was also good but he stopped now. He is 29 and has a family and works with my father. My father said, "go play tennis, just go, go somewhere but not bike".....I said, "OK." When I was young I did cycle. I was racing twice or three times in my life. I was only six years old.

Your father supported your tennis?
He's a very good coach! It is similar, the strategy of the sport. He is helping, sometimes you can't find the way where you have to go. He tells me how much I have to practice. My mom helps all the time with me. I've been changing coaches so much. My mother, she knows very good about sports and everything. She's won 6 championships of the World in sprint in track. She will say, "this coach doesn't want to work." She doesn't like this thing. We were changing, changing, changing and now we finally found a place.

You found a coach you are happy with?
It's not a coach. I'm practicing at a club. It's Emilio Sanchez, in Barcelona Spain. I am staying now in Spain all the time.

Are you traveling a lot?
Yes I do. I've been everywhere this year. Australia, Japan, Brazil ... everywhere.

Did your Mom travel a lot?
My mother did the same thing before when I did not have a private coach. I still don't have it. Before I went to the club, she was traveling with me. She was helping instead of coach. She understands tennis. She knows what she is speaking about and was helping me, but sometimes children do not listen to the parents.

Any other brothers and sisters?
Just one brother, Nikolai. He was also very good in cycling. He was in Atlanta 1996. They got the silver, second place. My father was the coach of them.

So, why is your father good at coaching bicycling and tennis?
My father, he is very good in strategy. You can see the results every time. He has coached 5 Olympic champions. I think that is good result.

How is tennis in Russia now. Is it very difficult for the players?
I think there is a lot of talent and a lot of girls that are very good but every one stop because of money.

1999 world number one, Lena Krasnoroutskaia is from Russia. Do you know her?
When I started to play I saw her. She was number one (juniors). After, when I was grow, I didn't see her because she was playing WTA. Now I saw her in Wimbledon and we met. I said "hi, how ya doing," and now we know each other.

Do you know of any young players that are coming up in Russia? How about Maria Kirilenko and Dasha Chemarda?
Dasha is younger then me by one year and Maria two years. I didn't see her play and Maria I didn't see for three years. I know she has coach and sponsor so she should be OK. Now it will be up to her. In Russia there are a lot of players that are good that do not have sponsors. There are a lot of young young people that are doing very well. Coaches are getting crazy. They are starting to practice unbelievable times and breaking the players.. Some practice 8 hours a day at 11 years old. 8 hours in the day ... it's impossible.

How much practice did you do growing up?
I have not been practicing a lot. Now, just doing a lot in club. 6, 4, 5 hours, it depends on how I am feeling. If I am down, no one will push me. Everyone trust me that I know what to do. If I feel good, I practice more. I remember when I was young, I was with a coach, for about two years and we were in practice with 4 people on one court. Four people on one court for one hour. The court was indoors in a small place and the mountain climbers also used this area to practice. They would climb over the roof as we practiced!

Are there any tennis camps in Russia?
There are some but not big.

Where are you going from here?
Next year I will play as many pros as I can, but you know they are limited.

Will you be playing junior Grand Slams?
I don't know, I would like to play Roland Garros but if there is another tournament on at the same time, I will play that.'

Jun 24th, 2002, 05:15 PM
Ive been absent from this thread for a while with exams etc...but sad to see her go down

But I remember Tatarkova had a big win over Pierce here a few years ago...so she can play on the stuff.

Hopefully she'll bounce back at the US Open and qualify there :) And good luck for the rest of the year :)

Jun 26th, 2002, 02:42 AM
Two Russian girls play against each other later today:eek:.
In women's doubles, Sveta K will team up with Gisela Dulko and they'll play against Cara Black and Elena Likhovtseva in the 3rd match on court 5.

Great win for Svetlana! :bounce: Now she has her first WTA title out of the way early in her career. Just like Dinara Safina recently did. And that's a great advantage for the rest of their cxareers! :D Because Anna Kournikova and Elena Dementieva are carrying the huge burden of never winning a WTA title! :(

From the www.sanexwta.com site:

'Kuznetsova wins championship in Helsinki
August 11, 2002

Helsinki, Finland (Sports Network) - Russian qualifier Svetlana Kuznetsova came back from a set down to defeat Czech Denisa Chladkova in the final of the inaugural Nordea Nordic Light Open.

Kuznetsova was shutout in the first set, but bounced back to take the second set and finished off Chladkova in a third set tie-breaker to take the title, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Kuznetsova, who is the first-ever Nordea champion, claimed $22,000 for her victory.'

Yet another young Russian girl shows Anna and Elena how it's done.
Congratulations Sveta:D:wavey::D

Aug 13th, 2002, 03:20 AM
This article I've just found at www.eurosport.com:

'Kuznetsova grabs first title at Helsinki

Russian qualifier Svetlana Kuznetsova came back from a set down to claim her first WTA Tour title by beating Czech Denisa Chladkova 0-6 6-3 7-6 in the final of the $140,000 Helsinki Open on Sunday.

The 17-year-old showed a great deal of spirit in bouncing back after a horrendous first set to finally overcome the 17th seed in a decisive tiebreaker at the end of the match, which lasted almost two and a half hours.

Kuznetsova had looked down and out after a series of unforced errors and a couple of wild shots gifted the first set to her opponent.

"I was nervous and made a lot of mistakes. I stopped on the court. I didn't move," Kuznetsova said afterwards. "(I told myself) 'Come back and come on, you can play this game. You made the final and you can make it'."

She came back re-focused and won the second set, raising her game and showing how she had claimed the scalps of third seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder and fifth seeded Slovak Martina Sucha on her way to the final.

By the third set both players seemed to have sized up the other in their first competitive match and it took a tiebreaker to separate them.

The Russian won it 7-2 with a shot to the corner of the court that Chladkova, running to her left, was unable to reach.

Kuznetsova, who is based in Spain, was ranked 123rd in the world coming into this tournament and made her grand slam debut at January's Australian Open.'

well done Sveta, she nearly lost the plot completely
up a set and a break *3-2 she lost 6 games in a row
broke back to 4-4 then in TB she was 0-4 down but won next 7 pts to qualify

go Sveta go !!!!!!!!!!!

next for her is 13th seed Farina

Aug 29th, 2002, 02:51 AM
wow, what a great run Sveta :bounce: Two very good players, which means some juicy quality points ;)

So far Sveta has earned 122 points in the main draw, plus around 34 points (i think) from qualifying, so all up she has earned around 150 points, which should take her to around the mid 50's!!!

Silvia is really tough obviously, but anyone else sense an upset here? Silvia doesnt have the best record when she plays 3rd round matches at Slams, and if there was a top 16 seed you'd want to meet in round 3, she'd be one of them (no offence to Silvia, as Im a fan of hers too!).

Good luck Sveta, hit those lines and take the win!

Aug 29th, 2002, 03:06 AM
I saw some pieces of that match. I left it when it 2:6, 3:2. But at that moment I had a feeling that Sveta already turned it around. When I came there next time, in 5 minutes, Sveta has already won the second set. After she quickly ran to 2:0, I decided to completely switch to Nastya's match, that looked match more undecided by that point..

Sveta's game is very simple, yet effective. I think she can handle Farina.

Aug 29th, 2002, 10:23 AM

i don't think i've seen more powerful thighs in a tennis player.

LOL! I remember thats how I described them when I saw her in Melbourne, hehe :o What a powerfully built girl! I wasnt surprised when I heard she was a budding cyclist in her younger years.

But...she's all business on the court which is what attracted me to her first and foremost ;)

Well, hopefully if the rain holds up we'll actually get this match completed tomorrow  But it may get pegged back to Saturday if today is a washout?

Status of Svetlana Kuznetsova as of Nov 24th

Until 18th birthday on June 26th, 2003,

Svetlana has 10 tournaments left to play with 2 wildcards left:

- 7 tournaments

- 3 grand slams - Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon

Since 17th birthday, Svetlana has played 7 tournaments: Casablanca, Helsinki, Bali, Japan (AIG), Japan (Princess Cup) and Sopot plus 1 Grand Slam: US Open so far.

Nov 27th, 2002, 02:35 PM
That's a lot of tournaments!

Sveta should play Boyton Beach and earn herself a lil bit more points :)

Nov 27th, 2002, 04:01 PM
7 WTA events is not much until end of June

two of these events Sveta should play (Indian Wells and Miami)
she'll play 2-3 clay events too

so that leaves 1 grass event and one event from Jan/Feb

Nov 29th, 2002, 01:07 AM
Sveta on Tennis Magazine!!!!! :D

On the move
The 17-yr-old from Russia first madwe headlines in August when, as a qualifier ranked No. 123, she won eight straight matches and the tournament in Helsinki. Less than two months later Kuznetsova, strongly built at 5-foot-8 1/2 and 160lbs., laid to rest any talk of a fluke victory when she won her 2nd title, in Bali. From no. 259 at the end of last yr she's moved to a career-high ranking No. 44. But her success hasn't been limited to singles: Kuznetsova has also won three doubles titles this yr with Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.

It was so weird when I opened this page. I subscribe TENNIS magazine and before opening I always try to guess the on the move players (male and female). And this time I got both right! I thought about Sveta, because of the two titles, and about Paul-Henri Mathieu (also because of his good streak)!

I got so happy when I found out :)

By the way, Sveta thighs are just

Nov 29th, 2002, 03:51 PM
I, and all her fans, always knew Helsinki wasnt a fluke ;)

Anyway, great to see coverage given to Sveta.

Cant wait for the new year, Im sure she will make bigger waves!

Dec 24th, 2002, 05:22 PM
Sveta has a WC for Gold Coast :bounce: :D :)

and she plays doubles with Navratilova :)

Russian hotshot heads for coast

One of the hottest young stars in tennis, Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, will make her Gold Coast debut at the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts at Royal Pines Resort from December 28 to January 4.

Following her success in 2001 as the world No.1 junior, this 17-year-old Russian sensation made 2002 a dream debut year, improving her ranking more than 200 places to be currently positioned at No. 43 in the world.

After winning WTA Tour events in Bali and Helsinki, as well as securing three WTA doubles titles, Kuznetsova has given notice that she is set for further success in the future. She has been given a wildcard into the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts singles and Smylie predicts that the top seeds will be hoping to avoid her in the early rounds.

In another bonus for the event, Kuznetsova will partner Martina Navratilova in the doubles event. "I have spoken with Martina and she is very excited about playing doubles with Svetlana," Smylie said. "I am sure they will make a formidable team and Martina is predicting they will be playing on finals day."

Dec 30th, 2002, 11:21 PM
Call it youthful enthusiasm or just bad luck, but a warm-up hitout with Martina Navratilova led to first aid for her new doubles partner, Svetlana Kuznetsova, yesterday.

The 17-year-old former world junior champion will be wearing a bandage on her chin when she walks on to centre court at the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts today to play alongside the 46-year-old tennis legend.

"I was practising with Martina and she played a passing shot and I threw my racquet to get it and it rebounded and hit me," Kuznetsova said.

The same year the Russian teenager was born, 1985, Navratilova was at the height of her stellar career, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and a dozen other Women's Tennis Association events. Until Navratilova ended her retirement to play doubles in 2000, Kuznetsova had watched the 56-time grand slam champion only on video.

"I am very happy to play with her; maybe I will be a little nervous," she said. "She has a million times more experience than I do but I cannot get shy."

Dec 31st, 2002, 09:46 AM
Good win in doubles with Martina for Sveta ;)

Congrats to her and Martina, they are a great team.

Sveta is finding it a little tougher in singles this year...playing higher Tier events and drawing tougher opponents early isnt doing her any good 'points' wise. I hope she can get her singles on track soon, I know she is more than capable (not that she's playing bad, but Im just concerned that her singles isn't progressing as well as it should be atm).

Best of luck for the rest of the season, Sveta!

made even better because she is in hantuchova's section and daniela lost to coetzer at IW so i would give sveta a good chance in that.

and the way dokic has been playing sveta should get through that match.

If she keeps her nerve and Jelena keeps her recent level of play, this indeed will be the first big win for Sveta ;)

sveta should win her first round match and she would either meet schnyder or callens in the 2nd round. she is capable of beating callens but it could be a tough match and she can also beat schnyder especially if schnyder continues her bad form. 3rd round i'm hoping sveta will play groenefeld (i'm initerested to see how this young player can rise up the ranks) but realistically all 3 potential opponents in the 3rd round for sveta have a chance in getting through. bedanova can play great tennis and henin does start off slow in tournaments sometimes.

but i'm hoping sveta can make a good run here because in the quarters she would also have a good chance as the seeds in that section are myskina and daniilidou. sveta has already beaten myskina this season and daniilidou didn't do that well in her last tournament so sveta would have a chance their. that section also has petrova, casanova and zvonareva all who are capable of playing really high quality tennis. petrova is coming back from injury but she was playing well before she got injured (taking a set off myskina and leading in the second set before getting injured and losing the match), casanova had a tough match against dokic so could have got into form after that battle and zvonareva has just won her first title.

it would be tough but realistically sveta has a shot at the semis if she can get past the 2nd round. henin is the biggest threat.

but i'd also like to see the other russians do well but i think sveta needs a break through at a big tournament.
