View Full Version : Some serious questions need to be asked..

I am absolutely speechless. I've been watching Daniela's match against Molik on CourtCast and I just cannot believe what I have seen.

Daniela was 6-2 5-2 matchpoint up.

She then lost 11, yes ELEVEN games in a row to go down 6-2 5-7 0-6.

I'd like to say well played to Molik but I really don't believe it is as simple as that. There is something seriously wrong here. For someone of Daniela's class to collapse so dramatically from match point to a whitewash is seriously concerning. I know it was extremely hot there so that may be a factor and Daniela just didn't cope with it as well as Molik, but to collapse like that is very, very worrying. I hate to say this, but it suggests to me that she was ill. I'm not making excuses because it could be that Molik played so well, and I hold my hands up and say well done to her, that was a great comeback. But in my heart of hearts, I honestly don't believe that could have been the case.

If anyone even dares reply to this mentioning eating disorders or anything like that, forget it, I'm not interested in garbage like that. But I do think something is seriously wrong for Daniela to have collapsed as dreadfully as that.

Graham, I know for a fact that at least one player (besides Serena) was carrying the stomach flu from Indian Wells, so perhaps another sickness is going around  I agree with you, something must have been wrong for Dani to not have even been able to win a GAME in that last set :(

Hopefully Dani will be ok...but if she was sick she shouldn't of even played

Needless to say, I'm sure everyone hopes she's alright, but did anyone else notice how long it took to start the third set. Did someone go off for a prolonged break? Was Daniela ill? It seems that Serena has a stomach virus, so it's not out of the question.

In extreme heat, they have ten-minute breaks before the third set, if one is needed.

Perhaps she lost concentration and when Alicia won that second set and got up in the third ... perhaps dani really just let it go, couldn't be bothard. Maybe it was mental.

I put this in another post, too, but this isn't a very uncommon scoreline. A player wins the first set, gets a big lead in the second and then collapses, chokes, etc. Sometimes the disappointment of being so close and yet so far is too much for players, and after coming close to winning in straight sets, they simply go away in the third and can't function. Add the heat factor -- it's hot, I'm tired -- and that can make it doubly difficult to get back up for it. Didn't Capriati have a set up and a pretty big lead against Serena at the French last year, only to lose going away in the third? I'm guessing what happened to Daniela is more mental than physical. If it were physical, I doubt she would have got to such a big lead in the first place -- unless, of course, the heat took its toll. I wouldn't worry too much. Somewhere down the road, Hantuchova will win a match in similar conditions!

It's all about mental, that's all. It happened to me as well... doesn't matter what the weather was or how bad.

We have seen so many of those scenarios than nothing surprises me anymore ... tha's called "big time choke" ... although that one was pretty nasty! 11 games in a row WOW!

Daniela is now a full member of the club of chokers! But don't worry ... she's in very good company:

Hingis (AO)
Henin (Amelia Island)
Clijsters (AO)
Hantuchova (Miami)

..... I'm sure I'm missing lots and lots of people ... :)

Lindsay .... (WTA Champs 6-0 in Tiebreak against Monica)

Also In a FInals last yr .... she had Champ points against Patty, Zurich i think.

I think it was mental. If she was sick she wouldnt have got that lead in the first place.
