I think they will actually make a very good pair, they are both excellent doubles players, Anna has proved it with a number of partners, and Dementieva has also had some really great results!!

i think it is good for everyone. elena and anna are very similiar so they won't be holding there partners back with their erratic play, and chanda gets a partner in babsi who plays at a consistant level. i am really happy to see chanda and babsi playing, although i am a little scared because babsi may dump patty for chanda in the future, i know i probably would.

go anna/elena
go chanda/babsi
go serna/serena ;)

I have reservations aout this pairing. If Anna's serve goes off, can Elena imbue her with confidence, the way Martina could? Can Elena help Anna to relax at crunch time, the way Natasha Z or Chanda sometimes could?

If Elena is the one who struggles, will Anna be able to give her the encouraging word, to let her know "I have confidence in you"?

So I don't see a future of greatness for this team, but they do have a good draw to the semis, and even that would certainly feel great for both of these players right now.

oh, the serves... :o

I agree but when Anna is on the doubles court, her confidence level goes up 100%! She puts at least 80% of first serve in and in doubles, you just need to put first serve in!

I think Elena will return from the deuce court and Anna from the Ad. The will be FANTASTIC returner!!!

Very true :)
This could be a change from the old formula for Anna...I don't think she's in the anchors' role very often (by that, I mean she's usually the counterpart of the more confident player, a la Hingis or Davenport or Zvereva). Then again...is Anna really the more confident player? Nevermind, disregard what I just said.

GO ANNA AND ELENA!!!!!!!! :)

I can't believe this! Is this an early April Fools joke? If not, then this is great news!

Actually they are natural doubles partners! :) Anna is much better on the backhand side while Elena is much better on the forehand side. Meaning Anna will naturally play the ad court, while Elena will play the deuce court.

This has made my day! Udachi Anna and Elena! :bounce: Watch out Williams sisters! ;)

P.S. - My sources tell me that Anna and Elena are playing doubles together so they can both play doubles on the Russian Fed Cup team this year and the Russian Olympic team next year. This is a great move by both women! :D

P.P.S. - What are we going to call them? The Spartak Girls? They both eminate from the Spartak tennis Club in Moscow.

P.P.P.S. - OMG! Who is going to hold serve?

P.P.P.P.S. - Bubble, let's leave looks out of this. This is a tennis matter first and foremost!

I am not really surprised. I kind of sensed it. After learning that Anna practiced with Ashley(also complained about Anna being unfriendly), it's not shocking that she plays doubles with Elena.

I agree about the FED CUP and Olympics! Awsome Russian team! Once again, Anna's serve in doubles is just fine! She just needs to put a high % of it in and it's ok. Like I said, when she gets on the doubles court, she becomes confident like Martina was on the singles court!

If they don't hold serve, the will certainly break their opponents! Anna's return in doubles is fantastic as well as Elena. They just lack confidence when they are playing singles!

Anna was never the ancher of a team? What about when she played with the unknown Iroda in Tokyo when they lost 7-6 in the third in the final to Raymond/Stubbs. Or when she won the doubles with Janet Lee in Shanghai.

I meant it's not the usual case for her :)
But good points both about Iroda and Janette, I'd forgotten about them. Anna isn't a slouch in doubles, that's for sure.

no, it's official, it's been posted to the tournament's official site.

I have to say that this is really a good idea if it works out ;) since it could give her some added assurance by way of confidence because of the some of the relations(or lack thereof) of anna and part of the russian federation in the past that has gone awry.

Like has been mentioned, anna plays much better confidence wise in doubles, so this should be very worthwhile.

good job to them for putting this together :bounce:

maybe they'll set a record for the most double faults in a match --- ever. :p
but if they both play well thye have a real chance as everyone has said they are both great doubles players . good luck to both of them id like to see anna do well and get some time on court

:wavey: GBFH!!! and :wavey: to all!!!

about the serves, anna actually serves decent in doubles. she hits them at around 85-90 MPH (better than 60-70 in singles) and ive even seen her hit a couple of aces. dementieva same for her. the both of them have alot of confidence on the doubles court. anna has an amazing backhand. elena has an amazing forehand. they both volley really well. they both return very well. if these two play their best they could win this tournament...

Both are blond
Both are Russian
Both started to train at the same club at the same place.
Both left that club at very young age.
Both are Orange Bowl champions
Both are Grand Slam semifinalists
Both are Chase semifinalists
Both are Tier I finalists
Both are minor Tier finalists
Both never won titles
Both reached Top 10
Both had severe confidence crisis started by untimely injuries that happened when each was at their top flight.
Both had unprecedented ( and unprecedentedly similar ) loss of serving quality as a result of confidence crisis..
Both stubbornly kept mothers as their coaches against advice of like everyone in the world
Both went up to become doubles specialists where had remarkable achievements.
Both probably are now at the bottom level of their singles play.

Two of our biggest hopes, two of our most troubled girls, two supposedly bitter rivals..

I am SO glad see them together!!!

May that work and may that help..

Anyway I am pleased GO ANNA AND ELENA

Cat, You owe me an email!

I really don't know why this is such a shock to people. You guys act as though they were bitter enemies and had a public catfight or something. They are both great doubles players, who want to work as a team. I don't see what is so shocking about that.

I do wonder what happened to Elena and Janette's partnership. Does anyone know?

I know to me the break up of Jan and Elena is more suprising then this team. I know that Janette works in a couching group, so maybe she does not like to play outside of that anymore.

Also Anna and Elena would have been going to Spartak at the same time so maybe they have been childhood friends.

No, they didn't have any catfights.. But for years they disliked each other and never made a secret out of that. Both traded quite unfriendly remarks in the past. Dementieva was considered a public enemy #1 at Anna K. boards and even earned certain nickname over there..:)

I think a catfight would have been worth watching! :p They did make unfriendly remarks in the past, but there is such a thing as growing up. Perhaps that is what has happened here.

Ah yes, Elena's nickname. Let's see. You are referring to the one where she is nicknamed after a certain reptile?

How could Anna make the Fed Cup team? Even in doubles, there are several Russians ranked ahead of her:

Russian Position (Rank)

#1 (7)
DEMENTIEVA, ELENA 2496.00 - 20 tournaments
#2 (10)
LIKHOVTSEVA, ELENA 2038.00 - 28
#3 (14)
PETROVA, NADIA 1561.00 - 11
#4 (19)
BOVINA, ELENA 1363.00 - 17
#5 (21)
KUZNETSOVA, SVETLANA 1279.00 - 18
#6 (23)
KOURNIKOVA, ANNA 1168.00 - 10

Is it fair to these five players if Anna is granted a Fed Cup or Olympics spot?

ys
Mar 21st, 2003, 08:08 PM
It is fair, janie.. It is fair.. The preference would always be given to a working doubles combo rather than to two highly ranked individuals ( remember Williams Sisters selection for Sydney?).. And If Anna/Alyona team will be working, they will be happy to have Anna onboard. Besides, you never know, in 5 weeks time you can find her in very good singles form, easily..

ys, Elena's nickname at Kournikova.com ticked me off bigtime! Didn't it bother you, too, Malysh? ;) Who says I don't have a good memory! :o

apoet, your thoughtful email from me has arrived!

And apoet, Elena would have won the catfight. pretty easily, too. Afterall Elena has a major size advantage!

But I think you and others overrate the bitterness and comments between them. Sure, there was some coldness between them But nothing major in my opinion. Now they both are in the same sinking boat as far as there singles careers go! Maybe teaming up will prod them on to singles success!

Udachi Anna and Elena! :bounce:

Anna is probably a better doubles player then all of them except perhaps the two Elena's. Before this years AO she had not lost before the QF in the last... god knows how many GS doubles draws.

ys, Elena's nickname at Kournikova.com ticked me off bigtime! Didn't it bother you, too, Malysh?

It did, especially given the fact that I was somewhat connected to how that nickname started to be used. Another poster ( named "vicold" ) used it once, and then I was careless enough to mock him using that nickname a couple of times. And then suddenly it stuck..

Yak
Mar 21st, 2003, 10:08 PM
It's not fair because she is ranked lower? HELLO???? She is the best doubles player Russia has ever had! The only reason she is not top5 anymore is that she didn't play doubles after the US Open last year and this year and that she had final points to defend at Sydney(lost r1 with Chanda) and champion points to defend(lost 3r with Chanda) to she had won with Hingis. Chanda is good but nowhere near what Hingis was so I didn't expect them to win any of the two tournaments! And I agree, you don't send the top2 anyway! Like they would have send Lisa and Venus !

It would be ridiculous to have Sveta and Nadia play doubles if Anna is available and used to play with another Russian.

I would rather have Anna/Elena play any team rather then Sveta/Nadia/Elena L/or any other Russian!

I'm sure there's a Russian Tennis Federation, and I'm sure they have selection rules. Anna wouldn't make the team under US rules. The latitude of the 'discretionary pick' the captain had got scaled way back.

As for making the team, the Russians will no doubt favor the players who likely to bring the most back to them.

I could easily see them deciing that Myskina, Bovina, Dementieva and Kuznetsova were the best picks to development the future of Russian tennis. There's also the nepotism issue. Marat Safin may politely suggest his sister should be on the team. And as a threat to win the gold medal, they might listen to him.

its not about fairness, its about picking the player or combination that is most likely to win. anna is far and away the most accomplished doubles player of that lot...in my opinion.

as for elena baing called the snake, it was almost more of an affectionate name than anything else

The only advice I have for Anna on this one is, don't look directly into the teeth. I almost made that fateful error. Wouldn't have been pretty.
