If there was ever a lock for Player of the Year..this is it. I would like Eleni to win Most Improved..though she probably won't :( and Kim to win the Sportsmanship Award :bounce:

I hope Kim gets the sportsmanship award ;) I would like her to get player of the year but i think we all know who will get that :p I'd give newcomer to Kuznetsova and comeback player to Morariu or Rubin and I want Daniliidou to win most improved but I doubt she will :(

They used to give these awards at Indian Wells, but I guess that will not happen there again for a few years.

How is the Sportsmanship award decided on? Is she the most popular and according to whom? Is she voted in by the fans or the other players? Or is this the player that says the nicest things about other players? Sounds to me that so many girls would fall under this category. If this is the player that is a great ambassador for the sport, then Venus, Lindsay and Monica should also have been nominated.

I think that it is easy to see which way these awards are going to go already, the nominations are pretty straight forward. Interesting to not see Davenport get a sportsmanship nomination though

Why do they even bother having nominees for player of the year? lol

I wonder why Corina got nominated for Comeback? Jeyaseelan didn't. Graham didn't, and she came a lot closer to dying than Corina did. The whole purpose of Comeback Player of the Year is someone who has overcome some obstacle (usually injury) AND gotten back close to their top form/ranking. If they want to give an award for overcoming severe illness, make it a seperate award and call it the Debbie Graham Courage award, or something. As it stands, the other 3 nominees fit the criteria for Comeback Player far more than Corina does, but given the way the tennis media misjudges the awards, the others may as well not have been nominated at all.

Did anyone get an explanation on why the WTA changed it this time around?

must be sentimental
she got alot more coverage than Sonya or Grahame as she's higher profile.

Lina should be the comeback player not for 2002 but this year.

there's only one player of the year. Serena
Doubles: Paola/Vivi
Newcomer will be Sveta.
Most Improved: Anastasia Myskina
Sportsmanship: Kim just to edge out Nastya

surely chanda has to get comeback player. not trying to downgrade the other players, but none of them had the consistant injuries or drop in rankings that chanda has had (i am obviously not saying that chanda went through more than corina, but i think she is there more bc she foughther illness, not because she actually did anything of note in her comeback). i know it is bias talking but i did think patty might have got a nomination. she did win a tier 1 and make the final of charleston where we all know the players she beat. she also had dropped to below 50 in the rankings. oh well, i'm really all that shocked. i would probably prefer corina to get it than patty.

hahaha! :)

brian, i completely agree about morariu. she's a brave woman but her comeback is much different from that of davenport and rubin. patty fendick told a bay area paper that an award (like what you proposed) should be created. (fendick was with graham when she got sick that summer returning from wimbledon)
