Former fan of Jen Capriati from 1989 to late 1993. Lost love for her when she was in trouble outside of tennis eventually after she lost the first round of US Open 93. My favorite memory was when she beat Graf for Gold medal in 92.

Former fan of Anna Kournikova from late 1992 to Feb 2001. Lost love for her when immediately after she lost to Mauresmo in Paris Indoor 2001. No regrets for me turning my back on her. My favorite memory was she made in the final of Lipton 98 after beating 4 top 10 in a row.

Hard-core and devoted fan of Maria Sharapova from Sept 1999 to until she retires. Right after that, no doubt I will retire as a tennis fan and no longer be following WTA tennis. Maria will be my last favorite player.

I became interested in Justine when I learned in the back pages of Tennis Week magazine in the spring of 1999 that this unknown Belgian girl had just won her very first WTA tournament. :)

I became an actual fan when she came to Philadelphia that fall and shocked everyone by beating the big star Kournikova right off the bat, and in straight sets! Who was this kid?? A few months later I finally got to see her play on tv, and I found myslef liking her game, her style, and her whole tightly-wound persona more and more. :hearts:

But it was only a year ago that I realized that Justine had sneaked past everyone and, unknown to me at the time, had quietly become my #1 favorite. I realized it (with a shock) when she was set to play my longtime beloved fave, Monica Seles, at Wimbledon last year, and I suddenly realized I wanted Justine to win!

But Monica, that sweetie , will always be my favorite human being on the Tour. Justine, though, did take over last year as my favorite player of the game of tennis. :hearts:

I first became a fan of Martina Navratilova around July 1987 - I accidentally turned the TV over to the womens final of Wimbledon that year and couldnt stop watching this great match where Martina was thumping Graf...

Just listening to the commentators had me in awe of Martina, being the 30something going for a record Wimbledon agaisnt the young challenger to the throne...

And as I learnt more and more, my appreciation for her just grew and grew and keeps growing to this day with each new feat she accomplishes!!!

I became a kim supporter when she made a dropshot against tauziat in filderstadt 2000 but I didn't realise how much I liked her when there was some thread here a few weeks before french 2001 that pissed me off and that was unique since normally only steffi bashing pissed me off and I thought it was impossible that anybody else could get me mad without any relation to steffi;)

so since that moment I support her. oh yeah I somewhat got nervous during the french open final 2001 too something I never would have imagined that would have been possible either after 13 august 99

I rather call myself supporter as fan though since it doesn't affect my life anymore like steffi did from 90-99. I am not depressed when she loses or spend all my money on magazines and so on;)
this is more healthy for sure

I am a steffi fan since the first week of french 1990 at the first 6 months I somewhat still had a live of my own :p
then we got cable with steffi almost every week and I was lost
oh well it could have been alcohol or drugs too at least this helped me in two schoolsubjects in the end (german and even english) ;)

Iva - 1993. Sometime before the French Open that year I had read an article on her and was intrigued by this 15 year old. Really started following her with interest after she beat Tauziat 61 62 at the Italian Open that year. But it was after she pushed Steffi in RG 93 (round 4) that I was hooked.

Eleni - Olympics 2000. Was proud to see a Greek tennis player at the Games and since then I've been an avid fan :) but it's more for her game and personality than her country of origin.

Monica - i was influenced as alot of friends/family used to watch her in early 90's so i sawsome matches. But i never became a die-hard fan till i heard she spanked Hingis at French 98....i had been watching tennis casually until then, but i stayed up for that final and it had me absolutely engrossed!! my heart was pumping intensely throughout and i was so sad at the end....until then id never felt much emotion from sports, in fact even tho i played alot of them i didnt like them much.

Jelena - saw her when she was about 13 years old absolutely destroying much older oponents on tv, on grass ofcourse ;). I taped her semis and final of some grass event and watched those tapes ALOT and fell in love for her. She showed so much talent and i knew she would be top ten within a few years cos she didnt have the power to outhit those girls really (physical limitation) and it came down to a pure display of talent a bit like Hingis. I didnt have the net back then so i used to get news from tennis aus. magazine and my interest in her increased greatly when i heard she made the french open juniors final. When hopman cup arrived and i saw her on tv again for the first time in ages my interest sky-rocketted :)

I followed my favorites career for 15 years, before her retirement in '99. Knowing that retirement would be comming soon,I found my new favorite,Kim Clijsters, when they played against each other at Wimbledon that year.
Although I really miss my all time favorite,it sure made the transition easier, knowing Kim's favorite player, was the same as mine. :D
I have really enjoyed following Kim career these past couple of years.I think she is very exciting to watch. And I plan on being a fan of hers until the day she retires.
There are also a few young ones I will be watching to add to my list.

Kelesi since I saw the "Look back at WImbledon 1990" during rain delay at the 1991 Wimbledon..they showed highlights of her vs. Jennifer Capriati.;)

saw that match! Helen was in such a good mood, although she did have "problems" with her skirt coming loose :)

I got into Helen after watching her play against, I think, Barbara Paulus in the SF of the European Open in Geneva, just before Roland Garros 1990. I have no idea why British TV showed this tournament, but I was watching the match, and became absolutely intrigued by Helen Kelesi. Such a wild grunt. Charismatic. Chasing every ball. Wanting to win SO badly. But losing something like 7-6 5-7 6-4 (ouch). I then saw the Seles-Kelesi match a week later at RG (where she was just so gutsy), and then 3 weeks later at Wimbledon versus Capriati. I got a lot of Kelesi that month and she just grew on me.

It's such a pity that illness took her out of the game because although she was VERY competitive and combative, she had such a charming side and could laugh at herself when things were going badly. I loved her intensity and positivity :bounce:

I've been a fan of Martina since the very early 80's - I was flipping channels and landed on one of her matches at Wimbledon and became a fan of her and tennis (I grew up playing softball and football and had this misguided notion that tennis was pathetic - watching Martina's athleticism changed my mind in a hurry)

She retired, I lost interest in tennis. Mauresmo got my attention in early 1999, and got me back on the tennis wagon, and i"ve been a fan of her ever since.

I've been a fan of Amélie since the first time I saw her play, which was probably around 1996, because I remember she was wearing sunglasses. (I think she switched to contact lenses soon afterwards). I have no idea which tournament it was, or who she played, but I just really loved her style of play, and because of this made a mental note of her name! It was another couple of years before I saw her play again, maybe Berlin '98, but I remembered her from earlier, and have really followed all her matches since the Aussie Open '99. :D
