Hi,

As some others on the board, I also send a mail to canvas Sunday evening to express my disapointment in them not covering the IW final.
Today I got an answer. For those who care I'll put it on the board

Frank Van Laeken.
hoofdredacteur TV Sport.

On my question as to why they didn't broadcast it later in the evening they didn't answer.

Too bad for us tennisfans, but I kinda understand they didn't show it live (not knowing the starting time and not knowing this days beforehand so they could communicate it). I agree with you that I also don't understand why they didn't show it at 9o'clock anyway (as they were planned to broadcast it then anyway)

I'll try to translate:

Thank you for your reaction

Because the schedule of play was changed at the last moment, the match between Clijsters and Davenport was played at an 'unfortunate' hour for us. First of all we didn't know when it would begin, because the men's match had to be played first and it was unpredictable how long that would take. This caused problems in our 'communication' with the viewers. Secondly we of course also have to keep in mind the whishes of the 'regular' canvas-viewer. Because of this we originally did program tennis at 21h (with the necessary cuts in the normal programming, but that was clearly communicated to the viewers). For the same reasons we decided not to broadcast it after the schedule of play had changed.

We are also 'victim' of the one-sided decission of the organisers and the American television to change the schedule.
Our apologies, we too think this is very annoying and uncomfortable, but unfortunely it can't be changed.

'sportive' regards,

Frank van Laeken,
head of TV Sport

ps. I hope I did a good job translating. If anything isn't clear, don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for the translation. It makes sense to me. I'm sorry you didn't get to see the match.

well, at least they apologized for the omission... I understood that Lindsay Davenport also complained about the very early time for the final match after playing a late SF against Capriati? Anybody read about it?

yeah Lindsay complained and certain fans used that as an excuse (not on this board but on the other one)

to quote kim: "it rains on both sides of the court"

She complained about the early time, but I don't think it had anything to do with her match with Jennifer, which ended around 11:00 pm Friday evening, over 36 hours before the women's final. As for the schedule being changed, I don't think the organizers had much choice as about 3 inches of rain was falling up until about 30 minutes before the matches started on Sunday ;)
