Miami set for 'fifth slam'

...

Serena Williams will not have fatigue as an excuse if she fails to claim her third title of the year.

The American has played just 11 matches this year but, most importantly, has won all of them, collecting titles at the Australian Open and in Paris.

Her dominance stretches to a winning run of 29 of her last 30 matches, the defeat coming against Kim Clijsters in Los Angeles last November.

And it is Clijsters, rather than Venus Williams, who could pose the biggest threat to Serena.

Venus suffered her only defeat of the year against her younger sister in the Australian final and beat Clijsters in Antwerp a few weeks later.

But the Belgian has been busy this year, chalking up 21 wins and two titles.

Clijsters' comaptriot Justine Henin-Hardenne is seeded fourth but has made a disappointing start to 2003.

Daniela Hantuchova has made the biggest improvement this year, although she still looks some way short of troubling the Williams sisters.:eek:

I already wrote a mail to the BBC to react to this stupid article (sport.online@bbc.co.uk. ) I hope you fans also write something!

Hi,

I was pretty upset when I read the article "Miami set for 'fifth slam'". Why does everybody has a problem with Justine Henin-Hardenne? After she was ignored in the Flemish press for months, the BBC also ignores her. Justine didn't start great this year? She played semis in Sydney, Australian open, Antwerp en won Dubaļ were she beat Myskina, Capriati and Seles.
Well I don't know what you guys expect more from her! She only lost to players ranked above her! And don't forget that this is here worst surface!
I hope you all are going to treat her the way she desevers it!

Dear madam/sir,

I read the following sentences in the article "Miami set for 'fifth slam'":
"Clijsters' comaptriot Justine Henin-Hardenne is seeded fourth but has made a disappointing start to 2003.
Daniela Hantuchova has made the biggest improvement this year, although she still looks some way short of troubling the Williams sisters. "

I really wonder what the writer of this article expects from Justine. She played 4 tournaments so far with the following results:
Sydney: semi-final lost to Kim Clijsters
Australian Open: semi-final lost to Venus Williams
Antwerp: semi-final lost to Kim Clijsters
Dubai: won

I can't believe someone calls this 'disappointing', may be the writer can give me (and probably lots of other fans) an explanation?

I also wonder if the writer saw the same tournaments as I did, since I didn't see much improvement from Daniela Hantuchova myself. She never
reached her Indian Wells 2002 level this year and had not one really good result.

thanks,

Kristof *****

I read the article in GM and I was really shocked... Justine's start of the season is really impressive to me...and promising for the next tournaments! 4 tournaments: semis and a win...now that's bad Justine!

It's just the other way 'round!!!!
It's Daniella Hantuchova who made a dissapointing start and it's Justine who has improved a lot.
Hmm guys guys guys come on are you from the BBC? The so wel respected bbc???

OMG, I can't believe this.
In my opinion, Justine couldn't have wished for a better start of the year, especially on hardcourts!
Just wait for the clay and grass seasons to start, she'll prove those ignorant reporters wrong for sure!

damn bbc are becoming more unreliable each day. Justine has won a title, is on a winning streak and only lost to players above her.... what has Hantuchova done lately?

aaaarrrghhh, this bugs me sooo much.
she's playing better than ever and her results prove it! what does she have to do to get the comments she deserves?
i love Kim, but the belgian press treats her like she's number 1 in the world and justine is nr 20 or something...

Luckily we love her so much!
Keep going justine!

I think you all are hard on the BBC writer. In hindsight, what was written was very true.

At the time the article was written, she won just 1 out of the 4 tournaments that she had played.

Since then, she's got 6 of 10.

[/sarcasm] ;)

Now, as for Dani...

Sep 8th, 2003, 11:44 AM
Well, I think we should all apologize to the BBC!
The journalist was indeed right, if you look at how well Justine plays and how high her level of play has increased, it's true, Justine has made a disappointing start to 2003 ;)

Is the journalist visionary or something? :haha:
