Monica has certainly stolen my heart. As an Arantxa fan it's pretty weird that I am now a fan of her (considering the countless times she beat Arantxa) lol. But they were such good friends, I remember a pic of them last year in Hopman Cup and even though Arantxa lost they hugged and had a great time, it was also the same pic with Jan Michael Gambill looking pissed lol. :D

I certainly have great memories of these 2 though. IMO the best years of tennis was seeing the grand slam finals of Steffi, Monica, and Arantxa playing against each other. But the last time these 2 were in a grand slam final was the 1998 French Open and oh mahn my heart was pounding the whole way through. Arantxa didn't win a grand slam for 4 years, plus she wanted to show everyone that she was still a force yet Monica's dad passed away that year and it was so hard not to root against her. I was happy and sad at the end and Arantxa apologizing to Monica in the trophy presentation was and still is the sweetest thing I've seen a player do. Well, with now Arantxa retired we still have one veteran still around and you can bet she has my support. GO MONI! :)

Hello and welcome Julian!!!
And thanks for sharing your memories with us.That 1998 match is still in my heart too.it was a special tournament for these 2 great ladies. It's too bad Arantxa decided to retire last year.I always loved to watching her in Fed Cup.Let's hope Monica will play more years cause when she,Conchita and Amanda retire it will be the very end of a great era in tennis.

WELCOME to the forum!!!

Arantxa is such a nice person it seems, Monica has stated what a great person she is. I was sorry to hear that she retired when she did. I will miss her like I miss Gaby.
