GB tennis chief to be named

The Lawn Tennis Association have chosen the new performance director they hope will lead a revival in the fortunes of British tennis.
Patrice Hagelauer's successor will be unveiled at a press conference in London at 1100 GMT on Wednesday.

Frenchman Hagelaeur resigned in December to become coach of France's Davis Cup team after four years spent trying to improve the standard of British tennis.

Numerous names have been linked with the vacant position and LTA chief executive John Crowther admitted he was pleased with the quality of candidates.

"There are candidates in this country and some well-known ones from abroad," said Crowther in January.

John McEnroe was the most high-profile name linked with the job but Crowther ruled the American out, preferring to go for a homegrown candidate.

"I would like to appoint a British coach because it is important that coaches in this country can aspire to the top position," said Crowther.

Great Britain Davis Cup captain Roger Taylor was another leading name thought to be in the frame, but Tim Henman's former coach David Felgate has been widely considered the frontrunner.

David Felgate has been linked with the position
"It's a job that when I first went to work for the LTA many years ago that interested me," Felgate told BBC Radio Five Live in December.

Henman has himself given strong backing to Felgate, saying on his personal website on Monday: "I think the best person for the job would be my ex-coach David Felgate.

"David has lots of experience at the top level of the game and knows exactly what's required to compete with the best in the world.

"He also has a very good idea of the politics involved in tennis and therefore he'd be going into the job with his eyes open.

"He's also not afraid to say what he thinks and he's as dedicated as they come, so with all those attributes I think he'd have as good a shot as anybody of doing a great job."

So doesn't look like it's gonna be Helen then :(

I really can't see British tennis progressing at all under David Felgate. He'd just be another "yes man" for the LTA. And a relatively inexpensive one too. My top choice would be Peter Fleming.
