View Full Version : Live Scoring Threads = Banned

I know everyone loves them...but if they are going to slow the board down then they should be banned or post should be limited to scorers only.

Today, being nice I used my cell phone to call and get real time scores only to have great difficulty in posting...whats the point. It was a total waste of my time and cell minutes.

What does everyone one think...I mean whats the point of "live scores" if ur not going to see the score until 5 mins later :fiery:

It´s not just the live score threads that are slowing the board down... somehow it seems to be friggin´ slow since its re-launch , with or without such threads.

I say we use the chatrooms again!!

Instead of banning live scoring threads, I think we should maybe designate one person to do the scoring. That will limit the number of posts of what the score is.

And maybe, there should be an update every 10 minutes, so people don't keep refreshing the board.

Just some ideas.

Plus, if the chatroom was up, that would be better.

I hate scoring threads too, but it's the only way to get scores most fo the time.

I understand your point, but if takes so long to load then the people who are posting the scores become frustrated

If the Tournament Web site bothered to show live scores as well
that would save on the Traffic here.

This is the Most Reliable Source on the Net

Keep it going

Yea, but sometimes a lot of websites show the scores, or during the Grand Slams when everyone has broadcasting and the Live Scores threads are still full of people, who seem to be just enjoying to read the scores even though they are watching it live!

Most people will not agree to let one person be the scorer, nor will they agree not to hit reload fifty times, thats why the Chat room is the best option. Live scoring is also unfair to other members who are on other parts of the board, because they too are affected by the slowness

THe only way to do it is to limit thsat thread to OONE person, the person acualy doing the scoring. NO CHEERING. It's not the posting of the scores that mkaes those threads a problem. It MULTIPLE posting of the same score, and lots of 'GO my fave!'

If we could limit it to one person posting scores, with no cheering, we'd be okay.

how 'bout we not have a million and one people write useless messages like GO KIM GO AI GO FUCKINGWHOEVER a billion times in every single scoring thread. JUST POST THE SCORE ONLY. IF YOU'RE NOT POSTING THE SCORE, DON'T POST. UNLESS OF COURSE YOU'RE GOING TO GO ON A PROFANE BINGE LIKE EARTHCRYSTAL WHEN HER FAVORITE PLAYER LOSES. oh wait, sorry, don't do that last one either.

anyway, if everybody stops being a moron, things should run more smoothly. i know it's a pipe dream, but can't we all just try and make it work?

This has to be the 800th time or so that all the obvious factors have been pointed out, and this will be the 800th time that it doesn't make a licking difference.

Cheering has no use really...

I imagine the refreshing every 30 seconds thing slows down the board a lot and it's impossible to stop that because people won't stop refreshing and if we only got updates every 10 minutes that wouldn't be live scoring and people would complain... the chat room seems to be the only solution!

By the way, ATPWorld was slowed down to a ridiculous pace today, and has now been "shut down for maintanence, that will only last a few minutes" for the past hour or so. Does anybody know if the two are related?

You know, it's not as if you can't find the Scotsdale scores on the web. They don't show point by point scores, but both eurosport and livescore have been showing game by game updates.

thus far using the chatroom to post live scores is the most effective solution...

King Lindsay...I can't believe I'm sayign this, but i totally agree with you

But like you added...I doubt most people would agree to No Cheering...and I'm not sure they should have to...it is part of what makes the board so great...some of the stuff in the scoring threads are classic. But we do need to find a way to allow people to have a good time without compromising the speed of the board. If it turns out that it means no cheering...then so be it

i really, really, really think it does mean no cheering. to my mind, all the cheering just leads to fights, a slow board, and profanity from earthcrystal. and really, i could deal with two out of the three, but earthcrystal swearing just breaks my heart.

Yay BK :bounce: :bounce: :worship:

The Threads aren't the problem, it's the tons of people that find the need to say "Go" xxxxx 20 times in the period of a minute combined with the plethera of fans reloading the page.

What ever happened to the idea of a "results ticker" at the bottom of the message board that was a permanent thing on every page? That never came through.

If we don't have that, the chat room is the only solution.

WoW, I never thought of that. That's a good idea as well. :D

Hopefully the moderators will read this thread and try to come up with a solution...

If anyone thinks posting "Go Ai" slows down the board then they themself is a little slow. ;) It is from everyone refreshing and just being the server/board. They weren't even that many people today. Seriously is was Ai vs. Alex. I think the server will completely die if Serena, Venus, Kim, Jennifer, Lindsay, Justine or Monica were playing each other.

Ummm, messageboards (and Usenet, the grandpa) as a technology were not made for real-time communication, so they have obvious technical limitations in that area. IRC on the other hand was made specifically for real time comm. It's far less bandwith intensive, and is in 'real' real time.
What I don't get is why a livescore chatroom hasn't been set up already. (Not criticizing the admins, here) The problem was here for ages, and a Java applet is not that hard to do (for people who can't/don't want to download mIRC or some other IRC client). You can have all the live scores and all the cheering you want with IRC and still have a stable and reasonably fast messageboard.
I don't get why people are so afraid of IRC...

We've been offering this for a long time. We encouraged people to use livechat for scores, posted links, active people in chat, and very few bothered to use it after two days. :)

Our system is also IRC based so you can connect using irc.wtastarz.com and joining #wtaworld.

Live chat will be back again tomorrow hopefully so you'll have the option.
