View Full Version : Clijsters Battles the Mandlikova Syndrome

Mar 2nd, 2003, 09:56 AM
Kim Clijsters is here in the Arizona desert as the No. 2 seed, but since No. 1 Serena Williams pulled out of the tournament with a knee injury on Thursday, the world’s focus has turned to the Belgian.

Clijsters is only 19-years-old, but she’s already in danger of becoming the Hana Mandlikova of her generation: that is, the obvious No. 3 player, who can sometimes best Serena and Venus Williams, but on very rare occasion. Recall that Mandlikova did manage to three Grand Slams, but was almost always a step behind Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

But Clijsters doesn’t feel like a stale veteran yet with any future.

"I’m still a child," she laughed.

didn't hana get 4? and isn't it a little early to be affixing that title to clijsters?

The title there makes it sound like it would be a bad thing to have 'Mandlikova' syndrome. If Kim retires with a career as good as Hana's she will retire very happy. Hana retired with 4 grand slam singles titles ( 2 Australian, 1 French, 1 US plus runner up twice at Wimbledon ) as well as having 8 wins over Navratilova and 7 wins over Evert. Kim will struggle to match such a good record.

Indeed, what's wrong with winning 4 GS's?

I agree with MirjanaLfan.

if she wins 4 grand slams, it would be great :worship:

it almost sounds like it's an easy thing to do :o

I think so. But In the world of Serena Slam ? Can she do it ? It's hard to be true

Interesting analogy. I agree, only I'd call it the Sabatini-Mandlikova syndrome.

In the early 90s, Sabatini, then no.3, was capable of beating both Seles and Graf on a good day. In fact, at one stage she had Graf's number. Yet she was incapable of ending their grandslam dominance.

Should be no problem.
