What's eating Barbara Schett?

2-5 so far. I think she is 0-4 in her last 4 matches. What happened to all this talk about training during the off season?

I'm worried about Nancy Loeffler-Caro... she's 0-1242314213 in her last 1242314213 matches. She'll come back though.

i'm worried for schett because she has actually said that she wants to focus more on tennis this season. she won her first match and it has been downhill from their.

vera has had some bad draws and at the same time isn't playing all that well. i'm not worried about vera just yet but if she doesn't do something before roland garros i will be.

the same goes for safina and kuznetsova. they had bad draws as well as not being in the best form. it's just the way tennis is but if they want to reach the top they need to find a way to get some good results while not at their best.

with mary i just think she doesn't have any endurance or it takes her awhile to recover, thus her matches are so up and down. one set she is playing great and another she loses 6-2.

What has Schett done since beating Venus in Paris a few years back?

schett hasn't really done anything since that venus match.

pretty much ever since her injury when she was in the top 10 she hasn't played to her potential or even as well as she was before the injury. but from what i can remember she did lose weight on her comeback.

with comebacks players don't usually have the confidence to compete at the top (if they had been before) because they know the tour has progressed/continued without them and they are technically behind the tour. i don't think babsi really got that confidence back.

gowza, when did barbara suffer this injury and what was it?

schett is well past her prime, unfortunately. she's been slowly slipping ever since 1999, and i see that trend continuing this year.

according to her profile on the wta site it was in 2000:

2000 - Collected third career WTA Tour singles title at Klagenfurt as No. 1 seed; reached Australian Open and Roland Garros 4r, l. to Sanchez-Vicario in 3s both times; d. No. 5 seed Coetzer and No. 3 Tauziat en route to Zurich SF; reached six more QF; struggled with nagging injuries; withdrew from Paris and Hannover in February w/stomach muscle injury; retired at Hamburg and withdrew from Strasbourg in May with sinus infection; retired vs. Davenport at Linz with infected right toe

she was in the top 10 in 1999 and in 200 reached the 4th round of the first 2 grand slams. then in the last 2 reached the 1st and 2nd round. so i'm guessing that those nagging injuries and sinus infection was around the second half of 2000.

maybe she wasn't in the top 10 at that time, i'm not really sure but on her profile it says her end of year ranking in 2000 was #23 whereas in 1999 it was #8.

barbara was fairly healthy in 2000. it happens to say when the inuries occurred for her that year, in february and again in may, both times in the first half of the year.

besides, if she was so unhealthy in the 2nd half, how did she manage to win klagenfurt after wimbledon?

she just couldn't follow up that breakout year. and her two losses against arantxa at the french and aussie open really hurt her badly. big momentum stoppers, both of them.

Agree with KD again. Schett had ASV on toast at both Melbourne Park and Roland Garros in 2000 (she lead 6-0 4-1 @ Roland Garros   ). And ASV was a player who she had dominated throughout 1999 - including a 6-1 6-1 pumelling at the AO when Arantxa was still in the top 5. If Babsi had of reached those two quarterfinals - which would have made it three straight dating back to US Open 1999 - i think she may have had the confidence to go on with it. Those two losses, combined with the injuries, totally knocked the confidence out of her and she has never been the same since. Total waste of talent, because she is one of the best shot makers in the game and has what it takes to physcially hang with the big babes.

sorry to nitpick, but Schett bt Sanchez 62 62, not 61 61 :p

I had to go check cos I was so shocked at the severity of the score!
