Probably can't use custom avatars yet, as I imagine they had some problems with it before. Like people using images they shouldn't, etc. But I have a suggestion for this. Let us submit one avatar for custom use, and then let the moderators decide if it's allowed to be used on this site. At least I know this works for a few other message boards. :)

well, do you know? there's a difference between making money and covering costs. the harmles ads should cover the costs, judging by the hits.

avatars are one way of making a site easier to follow for users. i can easily identify about 10-15 usernames, but the rest i make little connection with. the avatars are a visual aid. remove/charge for this and wtaworld becomes a worse place. the logic of charging for that doesn't follow.

they should get one-off title sponsorship from the WTA or Sanex or Adidas or Wilson to cover the running costs.

Okay I’m probably in breech of contract but what the hell this thread has upset me a little: Last month WTAworld made a whopping $67 from advertising. The site runs off three servers easily eating up in excess of 1000gigs of bandwidth each month.

Each server does indeed cost less than $20 a month and all the bandwidth is completely free. Obviously we're making a fortune out of running this site and laughing all the way to the bank.

If you feel we're trying to rip you off, don't pay. You don't even have to visit us. All I can say is we've done our best for the past year to please everyone but I'm afraid it's impossible. Our biggest achievement is staying online when we've regularly been making losses of $500-$600 a month on WTAworld - money we've swallowed from our personal accounts.

Offering avatars for a fee was merely an option we've considered. Those who want to pay to help support the site, remove all the ads and have the option of an avatar should be able to - don't you think? If it's unpopular or the general consensus is we're trying to rip people off then we wont even offer it. End of story.

I'm sorry if I've over-reacted a little bit. It's been a long few days for us all getting this site back up. I just found a few comments in this thread a little hurtful and disrepectful of the efforts everyone on the WTAworld team has been putting in.

Amanda,

Its all good, I think you deserve to vent after all the hell we put you guys through on when the board would be up etc...etc...etc...

The good thing is that you can see how many people really do "need" this board. I for one checked back at least every 15mins to see when it would be up...I can't help it.

Coming from a IT background I can def understand how frustrating it is to make changes/and improvements and only hear about the complaints, those that are satisfied are way less likely to post compliments, even though I have seen a few.

So just to help balance out the pos to neg Ratio , let me just say,

GOOD JOB GOOD JOB GOOD JOB GOOD JOB GOOD JOB GOOD JOB

I really appreciate all the hard work and effort that you all put into this site, even if I am still a little lost :-) It will come in time....

what i wanted to stress is that there is a commercial rationale for the avatar/advertising situation. that's what the many whingers didn't seem to grasp. i see from the stats that you're not profit-making, so i hope my comments didn't imply that.

i'm puzzled why you keep it alive if the running costs are draining your own personal accounts as badly as you claim????

i'm a bit concerned about paying to have a custom avatar. last time i had a custom avatar I was banned because it was apparently offensive to Kim fans. also, will people who pay a subscription be less likely to get banned for other things???? it doesn't make sense to ban a customer after all.

i hope you don't start charging, because it will create tension between those who pay and those who don't, especially if the non-payers think that the paying folk have a license to be more offensive. also, many people here are under-18 and don't have a credit card.

i think you all do a good job with the site, but fear that it will not improve with these possible changes in the pipeline.

could you do more with the advertising/sponsorship. These pages get so many hits after all - surely some sports company might be interested.

Didn't mean to attack, but just wanted to voice my concern and disappointment with the possible projects in the pipeline.

Well, just to voice another side, I dont care if the admins become multi-millionaires from avatars, or any other commercial venture they wish to attempt from this, THEIR site. Why shouldnt they financially rewarded for the work they do? In fact, I think its a good idea. They were hugely successful before - everybody wants them - they can have a default one or they can pay if they want one enough. I agree its tough for those not old enough to have a credit card, but well, theres lots of good things that they're not old enough to do.

For the record, I'm not bothered about having a picture next to my name, but would be happy to pay a contribution for the upkeep of this site because I am lucky enough to be in a position to do so, and for me it is worth it.

Thanks for the upgrades (especially for bringing the forum jump bar back - that panicked me!).

Fine - but there's no need to rejoice about losing something and then possibly having to pay for it? C'est la vie, yes, but it doesn't mean it's a good thing. So, yes, I understand why these changes are necessary. I'm just saying it's a bad thing compared with how the board was administered 12 months ago.

I can't see people paying if it's just to have a custom avatar. What a poor business decision anyway. Most members who've been around since last summer have gotten used to life without a custom avatar. The wisest time to charge would have been when people were really into the things, not now.

But then, I doubt it will be just about avatars. There'll probably be restrictions on other "enhanced" features such as PM-ing.

But if that's what's necessary to keep this board operating, so be it, because it is still a good-ish board.

Though the word avatar has various acceptable definitions, my fave is one who raises karma, standards, etc. So I would personally like to be able to pick a coach as an avatar. However, of non-parental coaches, how many are known of even on a "hard core" board like this (except maybe Nigel Sears, Harold Solomon, (ex) Robert Vant Hoff and (ex) Mike Sell? Pop quiz: WITHOUT looking it up, how many of you can name the majority of the coaches of the Top 10? (Belgians inelligble on this one, Bram! :p)! They teach the game we follow here. WTF do the young ladies pictured teach besides :worship: (or its opposite)?

 I think I know most of the coaches :p Of course Marc Dehous (Kim) and Carlos Rodriguez (Juju) are well known in BEL. (BTW, your selection of the Jen pic has been duly reported to Bram, Per, and other compatriots who will pelt you with waffles fired out of a serving machine for disloyalty). :p But how many members of Russian Roulette can name: 1) what player's mother, who now coaches her, previously coached which other Top 100 Russian player? 2) Which 2 have which coaches based neither in Russia nor Florida, who are the coaches and where? For Jen and W/S fans: which Florida coach did all 3 work with as teens? Francophiles: 1) which 2 pairs of French players "share" a coach and name the 2 coaches. 2) who was Tauziat's long time coach, and name Dechy's last 3. Again, all of this could obviously be discerned from researching various players, but that's not the point. Nobody needed research to post who's wearing what, sleeping with who, etc. If talent @ this game is what makes them unique, WTAW members should know how they got there (or stay there).

Mike Sell stepped down as Monica's coach after '02 when he got married and moved to California. (He now works for the USTA's High Performace Training Center there, a satellite of the main one in Key Biscayne). Her current coach David Nainkin is considered more like her fitness instructor and its possible she may never hire a "tennis coach" type, as fitness was what she mainly needed work on anyway. Lindsay replaced RVH with her fiancee's brother, Rick Leach around the same time. Jen is "coached" by papa Stefano. Jeca is on a rather odd 20 week contract (from early Dec. '02) with Steffi's longtime coach Heinz Gunthardt. Unless @ least her motivation level improves soon, I don't see it lasting. Amelie's coach Loic Courteau (an ex Davis Cup player) would be surprised to learn he's really a woman. :o He's also part of the answer to 2 of the "French" questions above: he also coaches Emilie Loit, and coached Nathalie Dechy for a few months last spring B4 signing with Momo. Glenn, this is not to be picky with you, as you care about this stuff. The point is that too many members couldn't give a FF who coaches those they :worship: . Amanda, here's a suggestion re. "feeding the bulldog": instead of charging for pics that imply (currently) that (except for the Belgian duo), one has to pledge to honor and cherish only one, maybe charge per name listed in a signature; double if a scrolling marquee.

i don't doubt that yuo guys are making zero bucks because message forums are notorious for consuming huge amounts of bandwidth but producing few clickthroughs on banners blah

Easily, regarding Russian Roulette and the players I really care:

1) Dinara is coached by her mother who was a coach of Elena D. (should I spell her surname for you?) and, apparently, used to coach an ATP top 10. Who could that be, hugh?

2) Sveta K has a Spanish coach (Sanchez connection) and Nadia P. has a German coach.

Is that enough? Or should I spell their names to complete your mission impossible? Should I also add that I find you posting manner a little offensive and lacking respect towards others?

Oh please! Hingis is a far better player than Bovina and always will be! If Bovina hadn't played since October, than Hingis would still be ranked higher than her! Stop picking on players after they retired!

She's retired... that's my entire point. Let's put Steffi, Martina, etc.... in too under that logic.

I'm sorry you took offense, but I also asked similar questions about non-Russian players to illustrate a point. In my opinion, to which I am entitled, there's too little analysis and too much of what Leena (Bovina fan #1 here) referred to in a thread about live scoring, as "Go, BLAH". (Also represented by endless :worship: smilies). I obviously don't disrespect Russian players, despite the Myskina incident, as you can see from the first player pic I adopted (though, as said, there are a few I'll eventually use just of the 35 up now - plus those added or 2B). I'm glad you got the Q's mostly right, and I can spell Dementieva quite well, thank you. (BTW, Islanova also coached Myskina for awhile). And ASV's brother (Emilio) coaches Sveta. Also, Nadia's coach Glen Schaap is Dutch, not German. You did pretty well, though, and certainly know more of this stuff than most of the :worship: folks here probably do.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vaiva, I reread your post and see what you meant. OK, BUT: you know quite well that ther are alot of members who delight in flaming eachother in a meanspirited way. I don't. I'm basically looking up in exasperation and saying to the :worship: crowd: You're better than that (or could be if you want). Is it harsh and often rude by now, yes. HOWEVER, it's telling the targets of it that they're @ least potentially fine observers of the game, not mindless cheerleaders. Apparently, around here, challenging peoples potential is worse than telling them to go fuck themselves, though.
