C'était Super Marion !

Marion Bartoli a remporté le simple juniors filles l’US Open.

© AFP

Here's a report I found on the net :Marion Bartoli, an 18-year-old out of Retournac (in France’s Loire valley), is the most dominant player to come out the qualifying ranks here this year. Coached by her father Walter, a doctor who quit his practice several years ago in order to guide his daughter’s tennis career, Marion steamrolled through her two qualifying matches and then impressively brushed aside veteran Henrieta Nagyova Wednesday in the first round, 6-1, 6-4. Already ranked in the top 100 (at 96th), Bartoli was a semifinalist in Canberra this year.

Bartoli is an unorthodox player. She has what they call in basketball a “wide body”, with a thick, muscled torso and broad shoulders. She plays two-handed on both sides and takes the ball early in a Selesian manner, except that she seems more willing than Monica to venture to the net (19 trips to the net today). Her trademark is a very aggressive return of serve, sometimes standing a good five feet inside the baseline to return even first serves.

We were interested to see how she would handle one of the tour’s more solid veterans. Chanda Rubin, ranked 12th in the world but coming off a disappointing second round loss in Scottsdale last week, was playing her first match in Indian Wells since 2000 (assorted injuries kept her away the last two years). Rubin has had success here in the past, reaching the semifinals in 1999 and the quarterfinals on three other occasions.

While the French teen had some good moments with her returns and aggressive play, it was a composed and proficient Rubin on the other side of the net. Chanda’s lethal forehand was working well (14 forehand winners), and Marion’s sometimes sluggish movement prevented her from defending against Rubin’s attacks effectively. It was a routine win in the end for the American.

After the match, Chanda admitted that she had to overcome problems caused by Bartoli’s unique game. “She’s an unorthodox player who forces players into errors. She plays her style of play very well. She‘s a good player who forced me to be quick, to work on my game and work on my shots.” The likeable Louisianan was pleased with her match and with the way her game is coming along. “I feel like I’m building, hitting the ball well,” she said with her well-known beaming smile. “I’ve improved my timing compared to last week.”

Getting to Know Bartoli
March 25, 2003

As a young girl from Retournac in France, the closest Marion Bartoli came to watching the best in women’s tennis was on her television set. Now it’s very much a reality, having sent former No. 1 Lindsay Davenport packing on Monday, she’ll face current No. 1 Serena Williams on Tuesday.

“It’s very exciting to play the No. 1 in the world. Last year I was in Juniors and my WTA ranking was only 300. So now I am Top 100 and I play against No. 1 in the world. It’s quite good improving, you know,” she explains in her charming, accented English.

Bartoli vividly remembers the 1990 French Open final between Monica Seles and Steffi Graf when she was six years old. It was the victor of that match, Seles, who inspired Bartoli to play with two hands on both sides and stand well inside the service line to receive serve. Marion’s father, Walter is a General Practioner, and was smart enough to realize that his daughter had considerable talent, and sought to get the advice necessary to maximize her ability.

At the US Open in 2001, she reached the pinnacle of her Junior career, when she upset top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 46, 63, 64 in a tense final and rose to No. 3 the ITF world junior rankings. Bartoli’s no stranger to success at Crandon Park either, as she reached the Orange Bowl U-18 semifinals in 2001 and won the U-16 title in 1999.

The 18 year-old is currently the brightest young prospect emerging out of France, along with Virginie Razzano, following the retirements of former Top 10 stalwarts Nathalie Tauziat, Sandrine Testud and Julie Halard-Decugis in the last two years. Indeed current French No. 2 Nathalie Dechy has been giving tit-bits of advice relating to the life on the circuit, while Tauziat herself is Bartoli’s Mentor under the Tour’s Partners for Success program. Good advice there too, you could say!

This week, Marion has had possibly the bizarrest of routes through to the quarterfinals. Having qualified herself, she trounced American wildcard Ally Baker 60, 60, defeated both lucky loser Evie Dominikovic (the injured Seles’ replacement) and fellow qualifier Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo before Davenport retired trailing 06 in their fourth round clash. Bartoli clearly has inherited her father’s intuition, as she smartly observed that Davenport’s mobility was severely limited due to a right hamstring strain. It’s only fitting that world No. 1 should be next on her agenda!

“For sure I have nothing to lose, just to enjoy and play against the No.1. Because always some people day, “Serena Williams is unbelievable. She plays so well,” and everything, but I’m going to see what it is really to play against the No. 1 in the world, you know!” she says.

Away from tennis, Marion likes to go shopping, to the cinema and eat in nice restaurants, or just have a “girl’s only” night with her mother, Sophie, away from her dad and older brother. Currently, Laurent Raymond (coach of fellow unorthodox French player, Fabrice Santoro) is the coach who’s assisting her, while Alain Tronqual is her physical trainer back in France.

S. WILLIAMS/M. Bartoli
6-1, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Would you repeat that whole thing you just said in English now - well, only the best parts (smiling.)

MARION BARTOLI: Like I say, yeah, it was good for me, a good impression to break her three times. I make return her winners on the first serve, so I was so happy.

But the only thing, I never won my serve game. I was little bit angry with that because sometimes I was like 30-love up or 40-15 up and I lost my serve game, so yeah...

Q. Did you think, after Venus lost to Meghann Shaughnessy last night, did you think, "Why not me? Why couldn't I beat a Williams sister"?

MARION BARTOLI: Even if Meghann lost, I think like that, "Why not me?"

I think Serena is more confident than Venus. I don't play against Venus, but Serena is too strong for me right now. I don't have the level of Meghann Shaughnessy. I just try to improve my game right now and to play with the Top 10 players, because my goal is to be Top 10 player so I need to improve my game for to have the level of a Top 10 players, you know.

Q. What have you learned from that match today?

MARION BARTOLI: I need to improve my second serve little bit, because when she serve second serve, Serena, her ball is very, very high and with a lot of power.

My second serve, when I try to serve high, my ball lost too much power. So I need to improve my power of my legs for to push a little bit more and to have a better second serve.

Q. Marion, you did something today very few players out of the Top 10 can do against Serena; you actually dictated some of the rallies.

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah.

Q. You were pushing her around the court. That felt good, no?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, it feel good. When she hit in the baseline, her ball is not too quick. I feel I can play every time, and I feel I can run her. When she runs, she's definitely not very good, so...

So, yeah, when the rally beginning, I was quite confident in my shot. But when I serve, and she come to the court, I say, "Oh, my God. Oh, my God, what going to be happening?" I going just to serve and, boom, return winners. I serve, return winners.

I say, "Oh."

Sometimes I serve the first serve like 100 miles. It was quite okay. The return was like ten centimeters from the baseline. I just keep the ball in play and after she make the winners.

I think the best shot for the moment is her return of serve, it's not her baseline shot. Because her baseline shot are okay, but not too quick. But her return on serve is very quick.

Q. When I saw you playing the Juniors at Flushing Meadow you were standing about this far behind the service line to receive serve.

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, but it was in Juniors and the junior aren't the level of Serena, you know.

Q. But you were able to do that in the Juniors, half-volleying the return, and you still play much closer than other players do to receive serve. You're inside the baseline?

MARION BARTOLI: Uh-hmm.

Q. You feel you see the ball better or you can handle it better?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, I see the ball better, and I have a double-handed game. So the trouble for me is just to not open a lot of angle, because if I stay too much far from the baseline, I open too much angle.

And with my back -- my left -- yeah, my forehand, it's double-handed, it's too difficult for me to just, you know, return from here like on slice serve, wide in the right side.

So, yeah, I think I push on my opponent some pressure and it help me a lot. Against Serena, I break her third times in the match, so, yeah, it's good. My return was good today.

Q. You always use two hands both ways?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah.

Q. You play at the same speed almost every ball, as hard and as fast as you can. Have you thought at all about being able to hit the ball with different pace?

MARION BARTOLI: I can't do it right now. I can't do it right now. No, when I try to push some lift on the ball, just to keep the ball more higher or more down like some slice in backhand, I lost my rhythm on the other shot. So when I try to come back with some flat shot, sometimes I lose my rhythm and it's very bad.

So I try for the moment to stay with flat shot and it works. I mean it's really works, yeah.

Q. Don't you think when you get up against players as strong as Venus, Top 10 players, they also fall into the rhythm that you fall into, making it easier for them to hit the ball back?

MARION BARTOLI: I don't think so. I really don't think so, no, right now. Because when I try to play a little bit some high ball against Lindsay, I lost every time the point. Some slice shots, you must be some very aggressive slice shots because if the slice shot is quite without any speed, you lost every time the point.

So right now I don't learn to make a very good slice and very aggressive, so I try to play flatter.

Anyway, I can't make a very aggressive shot with some slice or some lift, so I just make what I learn to do, you know?

Q. You said yesterday that you just wanted to see what it was like to play the World No. 1 and to enjoy yourself. How enjoyable was it playing the World No. 1 in a stadium like this?

MARION BARTOLI: I enjoy the moment when -- I enjoy to play against Serena because it's such a good experience, and I'm not going to play every day against her.

This morning, I get up at like seven and normally I need to get up at nine. I got up at seven, I was so excited, "Dad, dad, come on, come on, get up! I need to play against Serena, so I need to make more (inaudible) the other day."

I enjoy this moment, but my goal for now is to play more time against her and definitely to beat her one time. So I am not going to say, "Oh, it was just a great experience," you know. I want more now, so...

Q. I'm doing a celebration on the life of Monica Seles. Your style is very similar to hers. Have you ever thought that you're imitating her, or did you mean to imitate her or not?

MARION BARTOLI: No, never - from the tennis game, never. I try to imitate her for her concentration and her mind on the court, but never from the technical.

Q. Do you look up to her at all?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, sometimes I go to look her practice. But not a lot now, no.

Q. Did you see her play in her prime?

MARION BARTOLI: Uh-hmm.

Q. Where?

MARION BARTOLI: In the French Open.

Q. The French Open?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah. When she beginning, she was only 16, yes.

Q. Steffi Graf?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah.

Q. 10-8 in the third, you saw that match, did you?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, in '90.

Q. '90, yes?

MARION BARTOLI: When she beat her. She was playing with a Prince racquet - I can tell you everything - with a white dress (laughing).

Q. So you do sort of look up to her, in a way, as, might I say, "legend" of the game?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, yeah, I think so. Like Steffi Graf is, yeah. Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, yeah.

Jordan.
Mar 26th, 2003, 09:46 AM
M. BARTOLI/L. Davenport
6-0, (ret.)

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. I don't know if somebody asked you this, how much did this 6-0 have to do with Lindsay being hurt, and how much was it you playing really well today?

MARION BARTOLI: (Inaudible) I don't know what is (inaudible), but perhaps I play 60 percent. Yeah, 60 percent very good, and 40 percent for her injuries. But I play very, very well the first five games. First few games, I play really, really good.

Q. What did you do well?

MARION BARTOLI: I run quite good, and I return very good her serve. She serve some good first serve and I return very deep. I think it's -- after I run good, I make some winners down the line with my backhand.

Q. Were you aware she was having a problem?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, I saw sometimes on her serve she took, yeah, I think it was her right legs. So you push with your right leg on the serve, so I think she was disturbing on her serve. Some time when she run on her backhand, she was disturbing.

I mean, I stay focusing just on my game and just, yeah, stay focusing and don't see what happens over the net, you know.

Q. You play the winner of the Serena Williams match. Is that exciting for you?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, sure. To play against No. 1 in the world, so it's very exciting. My father speak a lot with her father, with Richard. They are some good friends, so it's quite okay.

Q. How is that, that they're good friends? How did they meet?

MARION BARTOLI: They meet at Paris in Gaz de France when she won against Mauresmo. Now, they speak always together. So it's okay.

Yeah, it's very exciting to play the No. 1 in the world. Last year I was Juniors, I was only 300, my ranking in the WTA. So now I am Top 100 and I play against No. 1 in the world. It's quite good improving, you know.

Q. When you turned pro, there were a lot of people who thought you wouldn't be able to continue receiving serve so close up. Have you found you've been able to adjust your game to take serve where you want?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, I adjust my game on the level, but I think I improve my return of serve than one year ago. And I still in the court, and I still -- I just, yeah, keep improving my return, I keep improving my eyes. That's why, yeah.

Q. Will you be able to stand that close against Serena Williams?

MARION BARTOLI: Serena, I don't know. I am going to see what happen. But I'm going to stay in the court, that's for sure. After, I don't know.

Q. Since you've had this strange run this week, the wildcard, the qualifier, the lucky loser, now Lindsay, do you think it's only right that this continues and you beat the No. 1 player in the world?

MARION BARTOLI: I don't think so (smiling). I think Serena is going to play - she's quite confident. She win everybody. So she has absolutely no reason to lose this year, and I think didn't lose from eight months, something. So she's quite confident. No, I just going to enjoy this match and see what happen.

Q. Do you go into that match, you know you're such an underdog, that you have nothing to lose?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, yeah, for sure, yeah. Nothing to lose, just to enjoy to play against the No. 1 in the world, and we'll see what it is to play against the No. 1 in the world. Because always some people say, "Serena Williams is unbelievable. She plays so well," and everything, but I'm going to see what is it really to play against No. 1 in the world, you know.

Q. Is this the easiest 60,000 Euros you've ever made?

MARION BARTOLI: No, I don't think so. Because, you know, you play -- you work a lot and you work very harder to reach this level.

Everybody just see, you know, when you play a Grand Slam and you lose first round, you won like something like $10,000 or $20,000. They say, "Oh, it's too much for just one tennis match." But they don't see all the work before you do, from ten years ago, or the sacrifice you do for to be there, so I think no.

Q. This is your first NASDAQ?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, I play twice the Orange Bowl. I won the Orange Bowl Under-16 and I reach the semi Under-18.

Q. What do you think of this tournament, the whole area here?

MARION BARTOLI: I like to be in Miami. I enjoy to be there every time. So, yeah, it's a good tournament. It's a Tier I, it's a big one. Yeah, it's good.

Q. You were talking about your father. What's your father's name?

MARION BARTOLI: It's Walter.

Q. What does he do for a living?

MARION BARTOLI: He's doctor.

Q. A medical doctor?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, yeah.

Q. Does he have a specialty? What kind of doctor?

MARION BARTOLI: No, just general doctor.

Q. He's here now?

MARION BARTOLI: He just, yeah...

Q. How about your mother?

MARION BARTOLI: My mother is still in France. She's always in France.

Q. What's her name?

MARION BARTOLI: Sophie.

Q. Sophie?

MARION BARTOLI: Yes. She never come with me. She stay always at home.

Q. Why doesn't she come with you?

MARION BARTOLI: Because she work. She doesn't like a lot to see my tennis match. She's very nervous when I play, so...

I feel it on the court, and I prefer she stay at home.

Q. What does she do for work?

MARION BARTOLI: She was a nurse.

Q. Can you remember watching Lindsay when she was No. 1?

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah.

Q. Does that seem...

MARION BARTOLI: Yeah, I saw her when I was -- it was in '92, so I was eight years old. She play the French Open. And after, I saw her a lot of times. I saw her when she won the Australian Open against Martina Hingis, she was 6-1 and 5-love up. She was playing unbelievable tennis. And after Martina came back at 5-all and finally Lindsay won 7-5. After I saw her when she won the Wimbledon. So, yeah, I saw her a lot of times, of course.

Q. Because of the history that you know of her game, was it a little difficult to get calmed down at first in this match, when you first came out for warm-ups? Were you a little bit...

MARION BARTOLI: Nervous, yeah. But I play against her in the US Open last year. And at this time, I was really nervous when I play against her first time on Lindsay Davenport on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was a little bit too much for me. I lost 6-3, 6-1.

Yeah, on this round I was just little bit -- just not going to see what she's going to do, but just focusing on my game.

Q. I don't know if you'll play next on Stadium Court, but if you do...

MARION BARTOLI: I think so, yeah (smiling).

Q. The Stadium Court, idea of Stadium Court, is that exciting also?

MARION BARTOLI: I play on the stadium for the Orange Bowl, the final and the semifinal here. So, I know, yeah. But in the evening session with the Stadium Court, it was very good, yeah. It will be very great, yeah.

Young Guns! Marion Bartoli Blossoms As She Shoots Down No. 25 Sanchez-Vicario.
by Jamie Gross
Monday, August 26, 2002

Young winds certainly did shake the buds of Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario's 16th appearance at the US Open.

A seemingly timid Marion Bartoli, only a measly 17-years-old, could barely look Sanchez-Vicario in the eye as the coin-toss decided who would serve first in the match. This disposition would continue as Bartoli would falter in the first three games, bringing Sanchez-Vicario up 3-0 to the crowd's pleasure.

Down 30-40 in game 3 the nerves continued as Bartoli stiffly watched a Sanchez-Vicario's topspin lop fall just in. However, game 4 would show Bartoli's youthful talent as she stunned a pro-Sanchez-Vicario-crowd to silence with her two-handed baseline bullets and precise lobs. Bartoli's feistiness would continue for a shocking ten games, winning the first set 6-3, and going up 4-0 before allowing Sanchez-Vicario to hold serve.

The veteran Sanchez-Vicario remained poised and was congratulatory to her junior as it appeared this was an all Bartoli celebration on court 10. It would seem the fickleness of the crowd here is an understatement for the fickleness of the tennis world, where the young guns can outdo the old guns. Bartoli can now look ahead to her next match up where she will face the winner of the Ludila Cervanova vs. Rossana Neffa-De Los Rios match.

M. Bartoli (Fra) bat C. Rubin (Usa, n°17) 7-6, 6-3

She is so nice! At one point Granville slipped and fell, and IMMEDIATELY, Marion goes sprinting to the other side of the court, where she bends over, gives Granville a hug, comforts her, and then helps her up.

Oh such a nice, fair girl :hearts:

No. 32 Shaughnessy Upset by France's Bartoli

by Erin Gell
Monday, August 30, 2004

Meghann Shaughnessy, the 32nd-seeded American, was knocked out of the first round by unseeded Marion Bartoli of France. Bartoli defeated Shaughnessy for the second time in two career meetings, posting a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.

Shaughnessy has had some trouble regaining her stride this year in singles play, and has recently returned to the court after a three-week battle with pneumonia. She made it to the fourth round at last year's US Open, but suffered her sixth straight defeat Monday.

Bartoli went up a break in the third game of the match and held onto her lead to secure the first set. Shaughnessy fired six aces to Bartoli's one, but her hard-hitting style also led to frustrating unforced errors. She snatched Bartoli's serve in the fourth game of the second set, only to be broken herself in the next game.

The match's momentum was broken mid-way through the second set when Bartoli asked for a medical timeout for what appeared to be cramping in her legs. If Bartoli was in any pain, she didn't show it on the court, breaking Shaughnessy to go up 4-3 in the second.

The 19-year-old Bartoli's star has been on the rise this year. In January, she broke into the top 100, and only this month sailed into top-50 territory. Next up, she faces Russia's Vera Douchevina.

- Bartoli won the US Open girls' title in 2001

- Shaughnessy's doubles partner is Russia's Nadia Petrova

- Shaughnessy has been a member of the US Fed Cup team since 2002

- Bartoli's best effort at the US Open was the third round in 2002.

I saw the last few games against Meghann and Marion really impressed with her poise, power and retreiving abilities, especially having to hit two-handed from both sides. It was the first time I've seen her play and I would agree with alot of folks that she definitely has top 10 potential.

After her disagreement with the Fed Cup team captain/coach, what's her chance of making the team as an alternate.

FED CUP / LES REACTIONS :
Bartoli : « Je fais perdre tout un groupe »
28 novembre 2004 - Emmanuel LANGELLIER (emmanuel.langellier@sporever.fr)

World No 41 Bartoli flew through her first set in 20 minutes and it took until the 11th game for Spears to get on the board.

"It was a pretty good match today, a good start for me," said Bartoli, who is a rarity in that she plays doublehanded on both wings.

The 20-year-old wants to get more aggression into her game, but reckoned she was not far off her best yesterday, quaintly adding that "my backhand sometimes goes a bit far".

In her next game tomorrow she might be facing former champion Meilen Tu. Tu was beaten in the final qualifying round yesterday, but benefited as the lucky loser when an extra spot opened up due to the withdrawal through injury of Hungarian Petra Mandula.

Unfortunately Kuznetsova will be affected by the controversy, despite her innocence -- all she did was take cough medicine out-of-competition. During competition last year she was tested very often and found to be clean. Out-of-competition tests are designed to catch steroid and EPO abuse, not the medicines used for winter coughs and colds!

Anyway good luck to Marion today. :bounce: It will be a very tough match.

Quand Bartoli rencontre Dechy

http://www.opengazdefrance.com/mediastore/sporever/photos_sporever/tennis/Femmes/BARTOLI_VISAGE_130104.jpg

http://www.opengazdefrance.com/mediastore/sporever/photos_sporever/tennis/Femmes/BARTOLI_OPEN_GAZ_SERVICE_100205.jpg

A really bad american tour for Marion.
For the second time in a row, she's been beaten in her first match !!

After Jessica Kirkland, Shahar Peer defeated Marion in 3 hard sets!!
It's all the more furstrating that Marion was completely under control of the match leading 6/2 4/1. :o :o ...what happened at that time....who knows!!

It seems that Marion has to face a little confidence crisis since the beginning of the American tour....even if she was playing one of the up coming talent on the tour. Shahar in only 17 y.o, close to the top 100. She's already reached 3 QF in WTA tournements: twice in 2005 in Pattaya and Auckland (Tier IV) and one in 2004 in Seoul (Tier IV) after going through qualification all the time. 6 months ago she was only ranked 238 on the world.

Nevertheless, Marion was in good form at the beginning of the year with victory against Danilidou, Dechy, Suarez and a really strong match against Petrova...so she should have won that match against Shahar. We're expecting Marion to break the top 30!!!

Keep on working and good luck for the nxt tournement

Série noire pour Bartoli
26 mars 2005 - Sophie DANGER (sophie.danger@sporever.fr)

Marion is a real serious and motivated girl who's working hard to make the best as professionnal tennis player.

Because she admired Monica Seles when she was a kid, she started to learn tennis imitating Monica's game. (playing both backgrond shots with 2 hands).

10 years ago, Monica succeeded to impose that style and became n°1 in the world. But at that time, the speed in the women tennis was slower than it's now (slowest serve and slowest background shots).

When a player has two handed shots from both side, it's harder to be on the balls, harder to have a long reach. That means that you've to be extremely fit and fast on the balls.
So even if Monica showed in the 90's that the advantage to play 2 handed shots from both sides was the power, the limits are bigger in term of being ready to hit the shots.

I really apreciate girls who are playing 2 handed shots from both side like Marion, A.Parra Satonja, A.Morigami or L.Lee Waters. But when I've a look to the statistics, nowadays none of the top players are playing like this (for sure it's a sign).

Nevertheless, I hope that Marion's going to find a solution to developp her game and continuie her rising in the top ranking.

I have yet to see any conclusive evidence that Lindsay Lee-Waters has a two-handed forehand.
