114 - Wynne Prakusya
140 - Tara Snyder
164 - Bianka Lamade
176 - Lilia Osterloh
180 - Rita Kuti Kis
196 - Brie Rippner
283 - Guilia Casoni

Are they just in a slump/injured, or does womens tennis now have THAT much depth??

Casoni reached the semis of a tier 1 didn't she?

what about angeles montolio . top-25 almost 12 months ago, and now having to qualify to get into qualifying, with a ranking at about 200, and she has 90% of her points to defend in a single tournament in April. she hasn't won a match since last April, and will drop to below 500. and there's no injury that we know of, having compiled something like a 0-17 match record since April.

and she lost first round of qualies for qualifying at Scottsdale

It's so strange with Angeles because there was an exact MATCH where that slump began,
2002 French Open, dark, damp day, Angeles goes on Court Central against Monica and plays great, smart, tennis to take the forst set on a tiebreak, then they go off for a rainbreak, come back and Angeles just loses it, plays awful, and hasn't recovered since!

According to Tennis Fondo, a Spanish tennis magazine, Angeles had surgery on her right shoulder... she is inactive

Actually it seems that Bianka has got some good results as of late.
Rita apparently needs to lose a good deal of weight. I hope that she can come back, she is one of my favourite players and a nice person :)

NADIA PETROVA missed most of last year because of injury. Even so, she has already propelled herself back into the top 20 in doubles, and I have no doubt she will work her way back up in singles soon too, as Lina Kras. is doing.

Gala Leon-Garcia dropped a lot too

Montolio has really went off a cliff, to a degree seldom seen. You would almost think she suffers from some kind of injury that hampers her play, but doesn't quite sideline her.

She did win a few Challenger matches at the end of 2002, but she has been disastrous since winning(!) Porto.

Well, that is sad for Angeles. I feel for her. Bianka seems to be picking things up quite a bit however. She recently took the Midland Challenger (winning 8 straight) and got the SF in Fullerton. Also, has Karina Habsudova retired? How about Kveta at about 150, or Jane Chi? :(

Does anyone have any news on Karina's present situation????

petrova and lamade hae been injured for awhile. let them get back into the groove of things. nadia did reach the third round of the oz open so she's getting back there.

Habsudova's last appearance on the WTA Tour was the Australian Open 2002 (lost to Barabanschikova in 1st round of qualifying).

She then played some kind of Slovakian team event in June of last year. Two mixed doubles matches, and a singles match where she (possibly) had to retire.

Since then, there is apparently no sign of her.

casoni got to the Rome qf in 2000, but the only reason for that was because Lindsay had default to her. Really, it does not surprise me at all that she's ranked so low, she's not that good.

Feb 26th, 2003, 02:20 AM
BUT Casoni also reached the 3r at BOTH the french and US Open, as well as a few other good results,so she does have some talent!!

TS
Feb 26th, 2003, 05:44 AM
Er, that is Casoni's best rank in a while! She has been toiling in the 300-400's for most of the last year and a bit...so 280 is good for her ;)

As for some of the others...

Kuti-Kis - needs to get in shape! She's got my Aunt's legs and when you're comparing an 'elite' athlete and a middle aged Greek woman, that aint good.

Petrova - was injured. She'll be back up there soon. She shouldnt be on this list.

Prakusya - when a players best rank is in the 80's, 114 is no real surprise is it?

Players drop in the ranks for various reasons...injury, illness, bad form, disinterest, etc...the good ones usually find their way back eventually.

Who is Casoni ?

I haven't heard about her!

Buitenzorg, it's unlikely you will again.

makarova Fan, yeah, I saw that French result right after the Rome one. but what has she done in the last 2 years?

If I am correct, she played Serena at the 2000 US Open, early stage...maybe 2nd or 3rd RD. For the first set, she stayed good with Serena. Serena won something like 64 62.

Kuti Kis, to me is a surprise. She beat Jen a few years ago on clay [in 2001--Jen's French year :) ]

Petrova missed almost all of last year with injury. She hurt herself at the Gold Coast, in the semis playing Venus.

Venus won 76 65 retire. Venus was serving for the match...but a tough match it was

Just that she's quite mediocre and probably won't come to your attention again.

The name that really surprises me there (other than Nadia's, which is due to injury) is Osterloh's. What the hell happened?

Hardiansf
Feb 26th, 2003, 09:10 AM
Prakusya  :fiery:
She only win 1 single match in this year, and can't take main draw anymore which she did last year...
Anyway, she with Janet Lee win in Qatar 2 weeks before :D

Yeah, ...

I think Wynne Prakusya is a specialist "DOUBLES" Player :D

Her DOUBLES Ranking is #24 :D

Nadia Petrova, I'm sure her ranking will pick her Up! to TOP 50 :D

Prakusya isn't so much of a shocker for me. I remember her playing Venus last year at Roland Garros. She has little power, and a terrible serve. Venus won something like 61 60. She needs to bulid stronger to compete

Well, before Giulia Casoni had the walkover about Lindsay, she beat Dominique van Roost. :o That also helped her ranking.
But Dominique was just coming back after the death of her mother, so ...

i completely forgot about snyder who i think won quebec a few years ago. kuti kis and osterloh should be ranked in the top 100. there's definitely a changing of the guard based on their respective swan dives in the rankings.

King Lindsay
Feb 26th, 2003, 12:27 PM
the DVR win was the best of her career, but it came against a troubled and struggling DVR, which you noted. Speaking of Dominique, I wonder how she's doing?

Feb 26th, 2003, 12:37 PM
Angeles Montolio reached the top 25 before the new ranking changes, which are now far stingier with points for Tier 3s, 4s, & 5s.

She had a great year in 2001, but if she had had the very same results in 2002 or later, she would not have reached the same ranking height.

But of course her inability to win a match, and not any rankings changes, is the main reason for her falll!

No idea. :o I heard she was on Belgian TV recently. She and her husband have also opened a golf course in Belgium a while ago. So I'm assuming it's all going well. :)

about Bianka Lamade
she was injured from July - November 2002
and so she dropped down to a ranking around #230
2003 is good for her so far, i hope to see her back in the top100 end of the year
