I wonder if, Indian Well tournament director, Charlie Pasarell, is aware that the image featured on the WTA logo, that is the topic of the tournament's web site article, is none other than VENUS WILLIAMS?

Yeah... two weeks ago you said it was Hingis and that the WTA would never put Venus on their logo :o.

One-eyed Williams fans see everything as being Williams-related, irma. ;) :p

It's been stated that the image is Venus Williams in an article that the tour release.....someone posted it.

Pic was posted either by Brian or Hollywood a few weeks ago.
I was surprised that the WTA would use the body of VENUS for their precious logo, but she is the goddess VENUS, eh? :)

What the hell does that have to do with Charlie?? I wish some of you guys would pull that log out of your ass about Charlie Pasarell. He has nothing to do with what happened that day and is a well-respected, nice guy. He has never been anything but complimentary about Venus or Serena. He wants them to play, he is sad that they won't, life goes on.

Tratree, are you Charlie's niece or nephew by chance? :)
You seem to be the one with the wood up the anus.

On the subject, it is a rather ironic coincidence regarding the article and the photo.

Tratree - I think 'nothing' is a bit of a stretch. Although I'd agree he had no power to compell behaviour. But the annopuncers for the tournament were calling two of his player criminals repeatedly. (Fixing matches is a felony in the USA. Jail time.) Unless he thinks its true, he has a corporate responsibility to his sponsors and investors to tell those announcers to shut the hell up.

Afterward, he was between a rock and a hard place. If he calls the crowd that bought his MOST EXPENSIVE tickets a pack of white supremacists bigots, how many of them will buy tickets next year? If he doesn't, then he alienates two of the biggest stars on the tour.

He didn't really have a choice. After the fact.

But it turns out that the announcers DON'T have to claim the Williams sisters fix their matches. They DON'T have to find players who'll say that on camera. They DON' Thave to bring the issue up.

Because after Inidain Wells 2001, they stopped. Maybe, just MAYbe, Charlie should have stopped them sooner.

If the WILLIAMS were playing, I am sure that those seats that were emptied by bigots would be filled by some people who are more decent and intelligent than the old ticket holders.

No Tee, I am no relation to Charlie, but I happen to see him at IW every year and I think I might know a bit more about him personally than you or other people who continually pin what happened in IW on him.

As for Charlie being responsible for what ESPN commentators or players in the tournament say, I would answer WHAT? How the heck is he supposed to control what Pam, MJ and Cliffy say, not to mention Dementieva.

Anyways, if you guys want to waste time crucifying the guy, go for it. I'm so sick of this topic it's not even funny. I'm just gonna go enjoy some good tennis next week at IW.

Wow!! Thanks for posting the photo. I thought I read somewhere back when the new logo debuted that it looked like Amy Frazier. Imagine my delight that it's Venus.:bounce:

Does this mean that you know him personally??? I don't think so

Geez....Venus and Serena have refused to make a big deal out of this....why do most of you feel the same?

I don't really care about IW, in fact I feel the same way VSFan1, I think most people in this thread except for a few are discussing the picture. I know that's why I got involved, I was not even thinking about IW!!:D

Charlie surely has no choice about whether to use the official logo anyway. Presumably when Venus licensced her profile to the tour, it was for use @ all events, just as that of NBA Hall of Famer Jerry West has been on their logo @ all games for many years (and he retired like 30 years ago). College football has the Heisman Trophy named for a long-dead person molded in the likeness of the first winner (late 1930's), who I think is deceased as well. I doubt Venus feels violated, but more like: "Sorry, we're not selling tickets for you and you've gotta play under my image anyway, take that"! And while not related to the IW thing, those fans and players who suggest Richard fixes finals (esp. Slams) are unintentionally paying him the ultimate compliment by reminding the world that "he's on both sides of the net during every point", a historic achievement for ANY parent and/or coach.

Tratree - You say you know the guy. Ask him yourself. Ask him, 'if you had it to do all over again, would you have asked the announcers to tone down match-fixing stuff in 2001?' I'll take a small bet that he says something like 'What's done is done, and I don't like thinking about it, but sure, I wish I asked them to shut up sooner.'

And I certainly haven't read anybody saying he's RESPONSIBLE for what the announcers say. But the announcers will actually give him time to say something. They sure won't take my phone call in mid-tournament. They may not have changed what they said at all. But there's no doubt that if the tournament director had asked to speak to the announcers, they'd have at least heard what he had to say.

Once the disaster had been created for Charlie, the announcers shut up. And left Indian Wells holding the bag.

I am sure Charlie wished that he could have tried to difuse that nasty situation and probably has had his people contact IMG, the WTA and sponsors to rectify the situation and get the biggest draws in tennis to attend his event.

But back to the thread title, I still wonder if Good Time Charlie knows that cute little logo is based on the likeness of the Great VENUS? :)

TR, I do love when I can jump to a different thread and say something related to the other. Specifically: in a post in the i-girl thread, I noted how Wertheim equated "waivers" to the all white clubs with black jazz bands yesteryear. So the W/S are doing exactly the right thing, IMO: probably a one-year boycott to make their point to Charlie in lost revenue for IW, even as V's image is "in his face, all ova the place". (And if he DOSEN'T know it, he surely will).

TeeRexx, I remember you were so adamantly arguing that the picture is that of a left-hander finishing her two-handed backhand. It just takes a little imagination! ;)

I always thought that new WTA picture was Serena. It REALLY looks like Serena to me.

No, Serena is the one on the WTA Media Guide ALL BY HERSELF. So, it's kinda poetic that it's the silhouette of Venus on the logo.:)

Serena has never worn a visor (that I'm aware of), nor has her hair ever looked like that ;)

That logo is a good tribute to a great player.
Yeah, when I first saw the logo, I believed it to even be Hingis.
This is one time that I was glad that I was wrong. :)
