View Full Version : Scotsdale- Arizona: Main Draw, Lindsay to meet Serena in Semis

Feb 23rd, 2003, 03:09 PM
This is the draw of the State Farm Women's Women's Tennis Classic:

Serena WILLIAMS (USA) -- bye
Qualifier vs. Alexandra STEVENSON (USA)
Qualifier vs. Lisa RAYMOND (USA)
Mirjana LUCIC (CRO) vs. Nathalie DECHY (FRA)
Lindsay DAVENPORT (USA) -- bye
Qualifier vs. Ai SUGIYAMA (JPN)
Qualifier vs. Yoon-Jeong CHO (KOR)
Elena BOVINA (RUS) vs. Francesca SCHIAVONE (ITA)
Jelena DOKIC (YUG) -- Bye
Chanda RUBIN (USA) vs. Jill CRAYBAS (USA)
Barbara SCHETT (AUT) vs. Laura GRANVILLE (USA)
Cara BLACK (ZIM) vs. Tatiana PANOVA (RUS)

So I guess, if everything goes the way it should, Lindsay and Serena would meet. While Clijsters has a relatively easy way till the final.
So what do you think?? (Assuming they both get to the semis) Do you believe that Lindsay will play like she's got nothing to loose? Can Serena keep on being on the level she's been for so long? I don't know about you guys, but I'm happy they're both meeting, win or loose I know it'll be a great match. :bounce:

Anyway, what do you think the upsets could be or who will be the surprise? Maybe Stevenson, or Zvoraneva.....

Lindsays quarter looks tough, if shes off her game i think any of those players could take advantage and beat her. If she meets Serena I think Serena will win because she's been playing so well recently, but it'll be tough if Serena is off her game. If Yoon Jeong Cho isnt tired from last week I think she can get through and cause Lindsay problems. Shaughnessy or Bovina will probably get to the semis from Dokics quarter.

I want to see a Bovina-Clijsters semi. That'd be interesting to see as would Zvonareva-Davenport. I hope it unfolds that way.

Indeed but it's possible that this time it would be not so close. If you consider their current form Clijsters should win in two sets, but of course you can not be sure.

Lena-Kim SF = Kick ass.

Bovina will reach the semi in her section...

Stevenson will lose first round like always!

I can't wait for this tournament, finally we get good TV coverage of a Tier II.

The draw is interesting, Serena and Lindsay would be a lot of fun, I have no doubts Rena would come out the winner, but it's still fun to watch her play Lindsay who is a great player, it'll be interesting to see how Lindsay performs should they meet...

Kim has a pretty safe way to the final, Dokic could give her trouble, IF she's playing well, and that's a big IF.
I would love to see a Serena vs Kim match, It'd be VERY INTERESTING to see how SErena would play, down in OZ she had sooo much pressure trying to win the SErena slam that she played far below her par, so she'd obviousley want to play better, but Kim would also like to avenge her loss.

Of Course, the world's #1 will probably still win the title :) but a good tournament none the less.

well in my opinion serena will win the semi final in two, but first linday and serena have to reach the semi. who knows? everything is possible...

I look forward to Lindsay doing well here. Hope she can surprise Serena. She can get one set for sure!

But it`s a bad draw! Semi: A classic Lindsay - Serena-match and in the bottom half a boring Clijsters - Dokic-match! :fiery: I want Lindsay to be in the bottom half in expectation of a final between the US girls. :(

i don't think it will be a great match at all. i think serena will run away with this one as well, we made the assumptions w/ mauresmo as well, couple of weeks ago, and she proved that she can pick up her game, i think she is going to start this tournie in the positive and run away w/ all her matches. and if she happens to meet clijsters, she will also prove she is not a force to reckon w/!

hope it is good tournament and Lindsay can lift up the level she's been trying to. She said she was playing about 75% in Pan Pacific. Her confidence has boosted from the last time she's played Serena. Who knows? the only thing I hope is that Lindsay plays some really great tennis!

stevenson always has a chance of an upset but i don't think she will do it against serena. but it's possible.

lucic has a chance of reaching the quarters depending on whether she is playing well or not.

zvonareva vs. daniilidou is the toughest first round and the most unpredictable. vera has been playing badly all year and daniilidou had a shock loss lasat week. one of them could potentially beat davenport when they get to her but i don't think they would.

bovina should get to the semis and give kim a tough fight.

shughnessy vs. bedanova is probably the next toughest first round match. either of them can win. if bedanova's serve is on then she should win but if shaughnessy's is on as well then it will be very tight. the winner could upset dokic and maybe even bovina.

dokic always has a chance but she is in very poor form so who knows what she'll do?

schett has the weaponary if she can put it all together to really trouble clijsters if they meet. but i don't think schett will put it together as nowadays it is a rarity for her. but kim should watch out anyway just in case.

Well two of my favs in the semis; Lindsay vs. Serena :bounce: I would hope that Serena wins (and really, I think she will take it in two sets) but if Davenport plays well and takes a set, then I hope she gets through. Either way, I hope the better player wins and takes the glassware home. Go Lindsay! Go Serena! :bounce:
