I think that's a record attendance for a WTA tournament in the past year, and a triumph for this two-year-old tournament. Only one or two ATP tournaments gain this level of attendance.

There were good attendances even for the early rounds, producing a great atmosphere.

Of course there are special reasons for this (Kim and Justine being two), but it represents a vote of confidence in the women's game, and its ability to interest and entertain the public.

Now why can't the WTA do the same for the Year-end championships?

i'd have to agree. belgium is the only place wheere the year end champs would get a big attendence like the one mentioned.

Congrats to them, but I think they need to hold a tournament more than two years to be assured of large crowds consistently. After all, this country is tennis-starved, so they're all excited to get out and see some tennis live...

Not a surprise. Belgium doesn't deserve the Year Ender, but it does deserve a tier one more than the pathetic crowds at Moscow does.

Belgians came to see VENUS play one of their daughters not just to see Juju and Kim play one another.
It was like Tiger woods coming to that country.
The tour championships in Cali will be much bigger this year.

I guarantee it. :)

Do you mean an attendance record for a Tier II tournament?

I THINK that's ALL WTA tournaments. There's not a lot of difference between Tier 1s and 2s in terms of attendance.

I know of Tier I's that had higher attendance..but 100,000 people is a huge success!! :D Especially considering how young the tournament is, it's very impressive!

Does anybody have the attendance figures for the Canadian tournaments or know where I could find attendance figures for different tournaments?

I know the attendance for the Rogers Cup in Montreal last year was just under 164,000.

Then doesn't that make this whole story incorrect?

I was sure that both the mens and womens events in Canada drew over 100 000.

I'm also fairly certain than more than 1 or 2 ATP tournaments get this sort of interest. Many of the Masters Series events draw very well, as well as a number of smaller tournaments with good fields, like Barcelona.

It's swell that this tournament is doing so well, but either certain posters or certain articles seem to underestimating the crowds at other tournaments.

Yes they do both go well over 100,000 every year. If I'm not mistaken I believe the Rogers Cup last summer set the record for a Tier I tournament attendance, I think they actually broke their own record from a couple of years ago. That's why I was asking if it was an attendance record for a Tier II.

Yes, I saw that. Nobody seemed to give your comment much notice though ;)

We're likely to see incorrect claims of Belgium staging the most highly attended tournament of the past year for the rest of eternity now...

How ironic that Canada with our abundance of tennis talent  :p holds attendance records.

That's ok though..I like the Belgians

It's the best attented INDOOR tournament on the tour. Last time I checked the Rogers AT&T Cup was played outdoors. :p

Aside from the exact numbers ;)

This is a great thing! It is obvious that tennis interest rises in those countries with top players. It was the case of Germany, it is the case of Spain (ATP mostly these days), and now, it's true for Belgium too. I am sure with 2 players in the top5, women's tennis is going to be a HUGE sport in Belgium in this decade, maybe you can get to hold the Chase? ;)

Yes, I think Antwerp has 3 courts? So that is a lot of people one each court if they had 100,000 in a week (and I'm sure only 1 court was used the last 2 days).

Well Done!

Hopefully this years end of year champs will be more succesful with cheaper tickets:rolleyes:

Antwerp has two courts with the center court having a capacity of 14,460 people for the final, for the other days the capacity was about 12,500 I think. Because of the huge demand for final tickets the capacity was increased on Sunday.

Wow - only 2 courts? Now that is impressive!

I should have specified indoors. Sorry.

I believe Pilot Pen and Indian Wells also have very good attendances outdoors.

The Antwerp attendences are massive for an indoor tournament (and most outdoor ones). This is especially so after only 2 years. It must reflect great marketing - even with Kim and JuJu as attractions. Does anyone know how this success was achieved?

The year-end championships need this expertise! And I would love to see them back in Europe.

The UK needs an indoor WTA event too.

That's what I read but I'm not sure tho!

Antwerp is the more attended indoor tournament

And the second more attented, with Montreal with the biggest crowd
