Serena closer to gold racquet
From correspondents in Antwerp

VENUS WILLIAMS has beaten local favourite Kim Clijsters 6-2 6-4 to complete back-to-back wins in the $585,000 WTA event here and put her one step closer to a gold racquet worth one million euros.

If the American world No.2 returns next year and makes it win number three, the racket, encrusted with 700 diamonds, will be hers.

"The racket's superb and you can bet I'll be back to try and win it," said Williams.

Blocking her ears to the 15,000 vociferous fans urging on her Belgian opponent, Williams produced solid and more or less flawless tennis.

Clijsters, seeded two here, started brightly enough before losing her touch. Trailing 5-2 in the second set she dug in to save three match points, rallying to 5-4, but in vain.

"I started really well but was soon struggling. Venus played exceptionally without too many unforced errors," said Clijsters.

"It's only logical that she's won," added the Belgian.

I don't understand what Serena has to with this.

As for Serena, if she wanted to win it, she would have to win the diamond racket for the next three years.

I don't understand why some people can't tell the difference between Venus and Serena. They are so different.

It's not just Venus and Serena they mix up.

I've seen Venus listed as "Venus Martinez" before - it was one time she was playing Conchita.

Not to mention the countless other times, other players have been mixed up. I think it's just a basic lack of tennis knowledge.

I'm sorry, but I think I'm going to take a wild card into the tourney next year. i mean, a fucking one million dollar gold racket! JESUS CHRIST! And one million euros too!!!! that's like, 4 billion canadian!

makes me wonder. who's going to be the next smart tournament director to copy this idea and add a special incentive to playing their own event??? I mean, other than appearances fees, which are old hat.

can you imagine how pissed Venus would be if Serena played and won the next three years and took the gold racquet for herself? Wow, that would break up the family. ;)

one thing: shouldn't it be harder to win that goddamn diamond-encrusted racquet? i mean, Jesus. Three wins in five years? CHILD'S PLAY. You should have to win 7 in a row to win that thing.

The title was correct, when Venus takes the racquet home it will be in the room next to Serena. ;)

KL I dont think when they made the rules, they expected the Williams Sisters to be this dominant. I think they thought that surely someone would come along and take away the trophy. It isn't as easy as it seems. Venus still has to win it one more time. Maybe Serena will take the challenge up and make Venus work for it. lol
