Tennis fans in the UAE will have to gear themselves up to watching a competition without the familiar face of Venus Williams at this year's tournament.

"Venus Williams has withdrawn and will not be with us," was Dubai Duty Free managing director Colm McLoughlin's brief statement at the end of his welcome speech during the draw ceremony.

"There are many reasons why she doesn't want to come in here," admitted the new tournament director, Salah Tahlak.

"But one of them is that she is planning to change her schedule and start playing once every two weeks," Tahlak added. "Basically, she's looking at a more balanced schedule,' chipped in McLoughlin.

"We admit it's a bit late for her to withdraw, and we're disappointed about it. But we're happy with such a strong field and the depth of the entries. Consider that all the direct entries were in the top 50 of the rankings this year," McLoughlin said.

Once every two weeks? Hurrah! Presumably, this rule will extend to the second week of Grand Slams as well...? I sincerely hope so.

hmm, maybe she will be adding some tournaments after all?

Great choice Venus, this means that at the French Open she will play the first week, but then 2nd she won't. :bounce:

How can she be playing once every two weeks? She isn't scheduled to play until Miami and that is a month away. She isn't playing next week because.... well... that isn't once every two weeks, is it?

I am confused.

While everyone is trying to figure out Venus's intention in canceling some of her tournament, I bet she is at home in bed eating candy. LOL

I'd so hope she would play once every two weeks ... but that ain't happening! Her next tournament is Miami and that's March 17th ... I'd be surprised to see Venus in Scottsdale! But again ... why not!

starr
Feb 16th, 2003, 07:30 PM
Why not?

I think the answer is obvious.

But that would be a real slap in the face for Charlie Pasarell.

I think the answwer is obvious too (since Serena is playing there!) ... but maybe that would be a smart move from Venus ... add one or two more tournaments played by Serena! That would only benefit Venus : free points cuz nothing to defend and better preparation for the RG finals where Venus will finally reverse things and spank lil'sis!

Harloo, I think Venus is in Italy playing with her Italian stud.

Feb 16th, 2003, 07:40 PM
Oh.. the Italian stud. I had forgotten about him. Are he and Venus stil getting it on?

He's kinda of tall and beefy and ... hair on the chest. I'm not sure what his face looks like though.

I think Venus will ask for a wild card into Scottsdale.

Feb 16th, 2003, 07:47 PM
Do you really?

Now that would be interesting.

Is Scottsdale next week or this week?

Infiniti2001

Scottsdale is Feb 24 - Mar 2... Why not Miss Venus??? :)

starr
Feb 16th, 2003, 07:59 PM
Maybe she will.

That would put it in the face of the Indian Wells folks, and they might be up for that.

I think it's a good decision not to play two tournemants in two weeks. If she enters a tournemant it is to win it, winning two tournemants in two week is quite difficult, especially physical.

She went to Italy for her tank to be refull ! That 's physiological !

If that 'two weeks' stuff is true, then Venus is asking for a wildcard at Scottsdale.

If Venus wanted out of Dubai because of fear of terrorists attacks, would the tour or the tournament want her to tell the truth about it?

maccardel
Feb 16th, 2003, 09:26 PM
why tell the truth about the terrorist attacks when monica and jen are still in the draw. It would be unfair to them.

LOL!

lots of withdrawls in grandslams then unless shes beaten!

I think the promoter meant "every other event."

that would include ;)

Scottsdale

Miami

Charleston

Fed Cup

Rome

RG

Wimbledon

Fed Cup

Acura (I guess she won't play BOTW)

Toronto (I guess she won't play New Haven)

US Open

Shanghai

Moscow

Zurich

Philadelphia

Fed Cup

this is just straight from the schedule :)

It would be nice if she came to Canada this year. It's a really great tournament..i'm slightly bias :o But the fans would love to see her and everyone cheers for everyone since we don't really have any country women to cheer for. Come visit Venus..i'm sure you'll love us Canucks! ;)

I don't see that happening. I think Venus will keep her hardcourt schedule as it has been. I'd be surprised to see her in Shanghai.

maybe the two weeks thing isn't meant to be taken literally...

does anyone have PROOF that Venus is still dating this guy? i wonder if he will actually marry her...:o :o

starr
Feb 17th, 2003, 02:45 AM
Literally... lol

Why would you say that if it wasn't menat to be taken literally... except of course if it was just a way to get out of going to a tournament.

And what do you mean proof? Photos of them together in bed? She was in the hottub with him and his Italian buddies one year at La Costa. Can't remember if it was last year or the year before.

I mean.. marriage... there's a big step between dating and getting married. Venus is pretty young to get married.

At the end of last year, Venus said that she felt she had played too much and planned to cut back this year. I doubt she is going to play every two weeks. It sounds as if the tournament officials are trying to supply reasons for her withdrawl. If she does play a reduced schedule, I hope she doesn't cede all the Tier Is to Serena like she did last year.

It would be her smartest move this year to enter Scottsdale or another event Serena is playing. She was so close to beating Serena at the Aussie Open that she needs to get the practice in outside the Slams and Miami - then it won't seem like such a big deal in a Slam final. People are always saying it is a mental hurdle she can't overcome - well the way to try would be to play her more often.

i understand that she meant that she was missing the next tourny. i'm just not sure that she was giving a fixed schedule for the rest of the year. in that sense i'm not sure that the two week thing is to be taken literally. perhaps she should have been more careful in her choice of words.

those pictures at la Costa are at least three years old. since then i've only seen one picture of them and in it he is most definitely acting as a bodyguard. what prrof do i need? pictures of them together looking like a couple and doing any of the things that people do when they are dating. i don't need bedroom scenes. please i don't want to go blind.

my point about marriage was only to say that there isn't really any evidence that they are even still an item.

Actually Rocketta, I think Venus will play Charleston and Serena Amelia Island.

I'm 99% sure both won't play ;)

hmm, but I think Serena has committed to Charleston already. Maybe they will switch which will be alright with me since I saw Serena last year. If I could see Venus this year I'd be estatic! :bounce: :bounce:

Yeah, Serena has already committed to Charleston.

I would love it if Venus played Charleston over Amelia Island, although I think Amelia Island is special due to last year's performance.

But then, Venus needs those Tier 1's.
