View Full Version : Deja vu for Clijsters?

TeeRexx

-------
"Williams' straight set win came before a capacity crowd of 14,400 that was completely behind local favorite Clijsters.

``I really felt good when I saw the crowd,'' said Clijsters.
-------

Two years ago, Kim Clijsters came in to the finals of Indian Wells with the mob, er, crowd completely for her and against SERENA WILLIAMS and any member of the WILLIAMS family that was within ear shot of those desert thugs. But, SERENA was able to overcome the Belgian player and the cowd for the win.

The Oz semi finals brought about just about the same situation, but the crowd was not as ride as the IW group and Kim, once again, was defeated by SERENA.

The finals of the Diamond Games had nearly 15000 fans all in the support of Clijsters and VENUS ignored the mob of waffle makers and concentrated on Kim and put a decisive win on the Belgian with some her own sweet chocolate game.

These incidents may not necessarily show the weakness of Clijsters in a big game, but displays a clear picture of why V&S are the best players in the world because they can not only overcome top ranked players, but their raucus fans as well.

"Desert thugs"? Eminently sensible fellows in my estimation, and indeed it is their assiduous assignation of anger and irritation to the Williams sisters' presence at Indian Wells that has ensured they will remain away for the foreseeable future, allowing new talent to shine in at least one Tier I event vis a vis the emergence of Hantuchova last year. Who knows, mayhap the likes of Myskina will make a significant breakthrough this time round and surge to a splendid victory, grinding American opposition into the ground? Oh well, just a mildly hopeful muse on my part.

All that hatred and anger at the mere presence of two black athletes is justifiable to some low minded individuals both at that event and on the board?

GO SERENA GO VENUS some people just come off as so bitter that their favorite isn't on top. Why not enjoy the success they do have, the matches up to the final, instead of tearing down their compeition?

cybelle... did you read the same posts as I did?

I think I was the only Kim fan who posted, and I certainly did not tear down her competition.

I think Venus is still a notch above Kim right now. Kim pretty much admitted that she needed more errors from Venus in order to win.

Kimmy need to keep working hard. It took years on the tour before Venus even won a tournament, but she kept on working and getting better. Kim need to do the same thing. (well, not ALL the things Venus does, but you know.. the hard work part)

I'm not trashing Venus or Serena for that matter..It just seems like this is another thread to point out the Williams greatness. It's not like anyone is denying that they are the best..I think most people will freely acknowledge that they are currently the 2 best tennis players in the world.

::yawn::

Toss out Venus, Serena, and Davenport.

How many girls on the tour have won matches due almost entirely to their serve? It sounds like Venus served Clijsters off the court.

One thing I worry about for Kim's sake is that her serve is respectable, but not great. When Hingis came on to the tour, her serve was respectable, and look how it is by comparison now.

joao
Feb 16th, 2003, 07:37 PM
Of course the serve is the most important part of the game ... but if you don't have anything to back it up, then you won't win much!

starr
Feb 16th, 2003, 07:45 PM
I thought the news reports were talking about the variety in Venus' game. What gave the impression that Venus served Kim off the court.

But I agree, the serve is something Kim should work on. Daniela too. Except that Daniela has a very good serve, but it lacks consistency.

I think that maybe the women's game is catching up to the men's in that regard. A good serve is a requirement for the elite players.

Oh, and Bram-Born, I see you but in the proper spelling long before I complained. Thanks.

Good observations TeeRex. Clijsters seemed to be involved in many of the matches where the sisters are booed.
Well, that is a too many "coincidences" (as Rebecca would put it) to my liking. Despite what anyone says some of the Belgian crowd was classless and don't deserve to be a fan of classy kim. But, bless the sisters, they don't seem to be bothered by the stupid crowd.

eta psi - When the WILLIAMS finally play some matches in Africa or the Carribean they will finally have some fans who will honestly cheer them and their efforts in a match final.

Until then, they will have to put up with crowds like IW, New York, Melborne, Antwerp, etc.

Joao - I guess just as V & S must be oh so careful not to wave to much or dance to long when they win, so must their fans not cheer to loudly or to long when their faves fight off top opponents and hostile crowds and come out victorious.

Bullshit.

Tee, you didn't even SEE the match, so how can you judge on the crowd? Did you know they gave Venus a standing ovation?

Yes, there were times when some were annoying. But if in a crowd of 15.000, one person whistles to get Venus out of her concentration, that doesn't make the whole crowd bad.

For a lot of people this was the first time they got to see a live tennis match. Did you expect them to cheer for Venus instead of Kim?

"The once-raucous crowd grew increasingly silent, with Williams whipping balls past the Belgian."

Doesn't seem like the 14,400 fans made it easy on VENUS during the match. But, the fans in L.A., SERENA'S home town cheered more for her opponent in the finals than the home town favorite.

Tee - I think it's a general thing amongst Americans. They usually cheer for the underdog.

I remember last year's match of Seles vs. Cho at the US Open and Cho came back big time to take the match to 3 sets, and the crowd was firmly behind Cho.

But for some reason, the Americans ALWAYS support their men.....it's just the women they are picky with.

That reported must have been deaf, Venus certainly didn't silence the crowd, LOL! The crowd was pumped up. I don't think it's fair to boo someone for catching the toss, I hate it when they applaud dubble faults, but they were just happy with every point that went Kim's way. It wasn't against Venus, it was FOR Kim, big difference. Also, when people boo during close line calls, it's not always at the player who's complaining about it. I noticed yesterday that when Kim complained about a certain line call, both Kim fans and Justine fans were booing, one at the umpire, the other at Kim.

And how many people were in LA anyway? They're not interested in tennis, it seems.

Crowds boo, and number one players get booed. The booing at the French Open was every bit as bad as the booing at Indian Wells.

Heck, at Indian Wells Martina Hingis got booed every time she questioned a line call or bounced her racket.

And the booing seems worse over the tv too. When you are in the crowd it is obvious that only a minority booing can make the whole place seem like it it booing. Also the shouts from those in the crowd who are disapproving of the booing just blend in with the booing to make it worse.

But ya know, if it floats your boat to see things this way, go right ahead.

IW vs antwerp booing is I guess comparable if you consider the potential of the booing to disturb/change the course of the match. The motives must be different - but the effect is the same. In both cases, it was wrong.

In 1997 Venus was a fan favorite at the US Open. I have all her matches on tape and the crowd was going crazy for her - especially at the SF with Spirlea.

By 98, Venus had established herself amongst the top 5, so she was no longer considered an underdog. The crowd still did more cheering for her (generally) than other players.

By 99, the crowd support was split. Venus was secure top 4.

By 00, she dominated - they were truly for the underdog.

With that said, many crowds love Venus regardless if they pull against her.

I think this board is not proportionate to the average tennis fan.

Lindsay and Monica are the favorites of the American tennis going public Not the TV watchers, but the ones who go to the tournaments.

I don't think there is anything that is going to get a crowd against them. I've been on the wrong end of those crowds very often.

Samprass and Agassi are adored too. Blech. Maybe Agassi slightly more than Sampras, but just try cheering for someone (other than Agassi) against Sampras at a tournament. It is not comfortable. I was cheering madly for Enqvist one year and people were looking at me as if I was insane or dangerous or both.............. probably correct, but nevertheless!
