In the thread Venus Clobbers Clijsters 6-2 6-4 (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57010), Gopher wrote the following:

Millions of people demonstrated against the American bully today. People like you and the attitude of the Sisters unfortunately confirm this wrong image of the US.

Those are pretty strong words. As someone who spent part of yesterday freezing during the New York protests, and a bigtime fan of Venus Williams, I'm going to flat out challenge you to back up your words. To my eyes, people were out their protesting to stop the mass murder of innocents. But let's say you're right.

You wrote, "...the attitude of the Sisters unfortunately confirm this wrong image of the US."

Not the ABILITY. Not the WINNING. The ATTITUDE. So, what about that attittude? What have they said or done, attitude-wise that is in ANY way bullying behaviour? And no, 'it's just my opinion' doesn't cut it. You just equated a player's attitude with something that millions of people worldwide are protesting against. That isn't just slander. It calls into question your credibility on ANYTHING.

So start explaining.

they(s and v of course) are bullies for sure. they don't give others much space to win titles :p ;)

TVB - There's a reason behind that. When I first got on this board, I discovered that people would say really nasty, outrageous things, and when you called them on it, they'd change or delete the post, and then claim they never said it. This technique is my answer to that. Even if gopher deletes the post now, I've captured it for all to see. It's impossible to deny writing it this way. I don't use the technique often because usually people around here stay within the bounds of ... well, if not reason, then 'fan-dom'.

Venus Williams has never been other than gracious in victory, and to see that equated with the threatened death of several hundred thousand innocent people was a bit much. Certainly worth asking for a justification in a forum I have a little more control over.

Volcana,
it is good to know that you walk the walk in NY.
Posters like gopher with gratuitous insulting comments about Venus and Serena earn more of my contempt than of my attention.

I too am a Venus and Serena fan and yesterday demonstrated against the threath of war in Iraq. Let me join in saying that that was a really STUPID remark and clearly not coming from someone with even minimal intelligence.
Please treat matters of worldwide and serious implications with respect.
Tennis players hit balls across a net, yes they make a lot (?too much) money maybe. War threatens lives and livelihoods far beyond the borders of Iraq.

I can't believe that being a tennisfan is like being in politics - strange bedfellows indeed. I wonder if you can understand that?
Maybe you should stick to tennis if that is how you interpret current world affairs and the Iraqis.

How much you want to bet that Gopher isn't going to show himself in this thread? He'll probably just view it. I don't think he has an explanation for those comments.

I do have. Tee Rexx continuously behaves like a bully on this board. It is a free world, I was pissed off so I am allowed to make comparisons. For those interested in defintions of bullies there are more than enough websites around.

Morality is never relative. Just because I see some do wrong or hate you, it doesn't mean it would be right for me to do the same. It is a slippery-slop to reason that way b/c it would allow for all sorts of evil. Unfortunetly, its a popular way of justifying evils: "we dropped the atom bomb on Japannese civilians b/c they bombed our military base."; "It was right we put Japannesse-Americans in concentration camps b/c the same was done by the Germans against the Jewish-Europeans". You see how low you will get when you compare your morality against others.

anyways, the reason why you tards feel overwhelmed to come on this board and share yuor 'experience' of yuor march, is to make a statement along the lines of "hey! look at me, i'm such a worthy human being that i sacrificed my time and endured arduous conditions to protest against the evil Americans"
I agree with one of your points here. Some peoples seems to be going to those protests just to brag about their self-worth or just to do some "cool" political stuff. I actually some would-be protester in our church claim that "All this protest and war is exciting." Can you believe that this guy is protesting against war and at the same time claims its exciting? He probably doesn't care about the children in Iraq, just about his self-image. But, a majority of protesters are not like that.

Joy I know your post was tongue-n-cheek but I frankly think you are wrong about this one.

I frankly think Gopher really its little paw in its mouth. His crass statements as far as I can see have not won any sympothy. Certainly not one from me.

As for you and Volcana, I think it's time the two of ya have a glass of wine together and make amends don't you think?

It is a free world, I was pissed off
so I am allowed to make comparisons.
For those interested in defintions of bullies
there are more than enough websites around.

You wrote, "...the attitude of the Sisters unfortunately confirm this wrong image of the US." That wasn't a comment on Tee Rexx. It was a comment about Venus and Serena Williams. And you were careful to say this was the WRONG image of the United States. So again, I challenge you.

Offer up some quotes of this bullying attitude. You wrote it. all 'I was pissed' accomplishes is to say that you take no responsibility towards what you write. Irresponsiblity is bad enough. Slander is bad enough. Excusing it with 'I was pissed' is a joke. I didn't ask about, and you didn't write about, OTHER people's definition of bullying. You used YOUR definition. So what is it?

It's YOUR morality. It's YOUR ethics. It's YOUR words.

Right now, all we have from you is insults towards Venus and Serena, that you can't even back up with your own version of facts. Does ANYTHING you write mean ANYTHING? Have you ANY credibility at all? You wrote something that, on its face, looks incredibly assanine, and exposes you as a fool, to say the least. And even you know your last response was lame.

C'mon gopher, start explaining. I'm not Tee Rexx, so Tee Rexx can handle you posts about him. I'm interested in what you said about the WIlliams sisters, which you still haven't explained, or offered any facts to back up.

C'mon gopher, start explaining.

Well, it's just my opinion but I suspect that people just don't like them screeching so much in their matches as they hammer their opponents into the ground. To the politically sensitive, the banshee wail of the Williams sisters evokes the belligerent, righteous rhetoric of the American war machine as it oils its capitalist gears in readiness to unleash suffering upon the helpless denizens of those countries unlucky enough to be carelessly blanketed as terrorist havens, when in fact they merely want to live free under a government that is in fact far fairer than the totalitarian yoke of oppression that constitutes the USA's political administration.

Or something like that, anyway.

Hendouble I don't know you but your post was somewhat rubbish in my opinion.

I bet if Chanda Rubin or Amy Frazier had beaten Kim by the same identical score, everyone would be sending praises or "wows" for a stunning upset over Kim.

This crap about the sisters does not sit well with me.

Gopher will have no explaination. His opinions represent a cesspool of ignorance.

Hendouble
Feb 16th, 2003, 04:02 PM
"Somewhat rubbish"? Harsh but scarcely scathing criticism, and displaying a distinct lack of linguistic eloquence if I do say so myself.

And I might point out that had Rubin or Frazier beaten Kim in the final today it would have counted as a genuine upset because they've never done it before and would be rightly praised, but you cannot say that a Williams win over any other opponent on the tour is surprising, or unexpected.

nander, eta piss, i'm responding in 2 threads on the same subject

this thread has jack shit to do with tennis, Volcana has started a peacetard thread in GM and disguised it as some sort of thread about the Williams sisters

anyways, if yuo want to argue about the peacetards blah, do so in my non tennis thread

Hendouble my dear good chap (or lass) I simply pointed out my disagreement with you. My comment was not meant to be scathing toward you.

If you want more "distinctive linguistic eloquence" in conversation perhaps you might want to frequent websites that theorize the molecular structures of Kumquat Trees or the mating habits of centipedes.

Otherwise, my lovely new poster, this is a tennis board not a college course in language.

Although I love how you are annoying the best of the best around here already so keep it up darling:kiss:

hendouble, my utmost and sincerest passion from deep within the pits of my soul:

your overflowing over-trying and overly mundane posts were for just a minute a breath of exciting and strangely entertaining fresh air. However, after having read not one not two not three not four but indeed more than 10 posts of such repetitive and monotonous nature in EVERY thread that could be found on all of our favorite website--WTAWORLD--today, i have a concept, and alas advice, that might be strangely new and unknown to you:

IT'S GETTING OLD. STOP WHILE YOU'RE AHEAD. it's not funny anymore.

incisive. succint. and to the point. didn't your english teacher ever teach you about verbosity?

but, of course, i still love you.

hollywood 1272 - good point. But sadly, verbosity is in my soul, even if I do on occasion use it as a defence mechanism against those I find offensive and irritating. Trust me, the moment anyone comes along in a thread who is actually willing to offer a decent topic of conversation without starting a personal attack on another poster or resorting to childish name-calling, I'll be in there to give my opinions in as sensible and straightforward a manner as possible.

But that doesn't look like happening any time soon, quite frankly. And besides, the whole point of adopting this style IS to annoy certain people and to win the support of others, and until I know exactly who I would want to have a normal conversation with I'm not going to completely drop my guard.
