View Full Version : Is the term 'bitch-slapped' just trivializing domestic violence?

Volcana

I find it offensive, but have foregone trying to get posts pulled while I thought about it. Now I have. And I find myself certain the term 'bitch-slapped' is based on a justification of men beating women.

Am I fair in assuming that people who use the term think violence against women is justified?

You tell me.

Well, considering that it appears to be used in the context of women's tennis, it would seem to me to refer to violence by women against women, although the use of the term "bitch" merely suggests certain female players' feeling towards other certain female players that do not in fact exist, but are imagined to do by some of the people who post here.

On the other hand, a large number of female players do possess dogs, including Serena I believe, so perhaps they are simply inciting violence towards domestic pets rather than their female, human owners. Just a possibility, anyway.

Serena is slapping her female dog???

What next?

:o

No, I was suggesting that rather other female players when they play Serena resort to "bitch-slapping" her dog rather than her, perhaps in an attempt to force some weakness out of Serena on the court - at least, I mean that's what certain posters are suggesting when they use the term "bitch-slap". I, of course, would never entertain such a puerile and fallacious notion.

It's an interesting graphic, but might I suggest that in the interest of harmonious relations and equanimity between people on this board, you allow her to state her point which is a fairly reasonable one? And personally, for me the thought of Dokic in some kind of uber-SS uniform makes me cringe.

Well on our brother board "ATPworld" Marat Safin has been called a bitch and done worse than slapping :o :cough:

I don't think there's anything wrong with using the term, it's just harmless fun.

i think its just talkin about women slapping women (or men) not men slapping women. It just refers to the way in which (most, and stereotypically) women hit by slapping instead of punching.
Personally i tend to go for breaking bones, but ho hum, thats another story!;) personally i do not find the term offensive (unless sum1 used it to describe my right hook and then i would!!):D

Actually, Jelena in one of those little SS Storm trooper outfits (sans trousers, but plus riding crop) would be quite fetching.

Car Key Boi is not about harmony and equanimity. Thank goodness.

Well Car Key Boi, on the strength of that last post it's you who evidently need to join a book club to tighten up your English skills, not me.

And there may not be harmonious relations and equanimity right now on here, but that is what I wish to try to create via my presence - an open and honest discussion forum where civility and reasoned consideration are the rule, and where expressions such as "fucktards" will hopefully be consigned to the rubbish bin of history, to paraphrase Trotsky's infamous saying.

That's all, really.

Well since I am neither politically correct nor a serving member of the British Constabulary, I fail to see how the term "PC" can apply to me. I wish to fashion a message board free of such political in-fighting and debate over correctness in modern society, instead creating an egalitarian community founded on the principles of justice, freedom and Williams-sneering.

Volcana I guess it's how you intrepret it. Some will be offended, and others won't. That's life, but you have a right to your opinion.

Well I can't say that I use the term but I think it trivialises domestic violence less than the term 'great white hope' promotes unnecessary racial division.

BTW, CKB yuo are amusing.

Ah, you make a good point CKB, but I am a firm believer that we must not take the social determinist view and let society shape us, rather we must confirm our own free will as citizens of humanity and shape our environment ourselves. And besides, to suggest that an electronic message forum artificially assembled via the pathways of the Internet should be allowed to naturally grow is patently ludicrous.

And back to the topic.........

I never thought of the term "bitch-slapped" in a demeaning way towards women.....

that is perhaps because I call everyone a bitch....and at work, that's my nickname, so i guess i would be demeaning myself then ;)

That's what I thought it meant, too. However, my knowledge of American slang isn't that great.

Oh, you have the vocabulary down pat all right, but the grammar is all wrong... the way that sentence is constructed, its understandability quotient is virtually negligible.

I thought it was the other way around... and it is OK for women to beat up men.

I also thought the term 'bitch-slap' alluded to female empowerment rather than subjugation.
