View Full Version : Tamarine Tanasugarn's Wimbledon record

Feb 14th, 2003, 10:18 PM
As most of you know, Tamarine holds the distinct achievement of reaching (and losing in) the 4th round of Wimbledon for 5 consecutive years.

1998: Martina
1999: Mirjana
2000: Serena
2001: Nathalie
2002: Monica

This year she will likely be again seeded in the 16-32 range meaning the earliest she could draw a top seed in the 3rd round. She's never reached a Grand Slam QF before. IMO it is unlikely that it will happen again, it's unlikely that someone loses in the 4th round for 6 consecutive years. But who knows? She'll lose before the 4th or I may be proven wrong and it happens again. Oh yes, there's one other possibility ;)

Is Tamarine 4 straigh 4th round appearance better than Kournikova 1 semi and 1 4th round?

I don't think so but..

If Tammy doesn't reach the fourth round and then lose, the stars will fall out of the sky, dr. phil will have credibility as a therapist, and the Israelis and the Palestinians will make nice.

Tammy has been blessed by the Wimbledon gods with good draws every year - especially back when there were only 16 seeds.

For her sake, I hope she makes it :) Her and Wimbledon 4th rounds are a staple :)

hey, she hasn't always had good draws. In 2001, she upset Mauresmo in the 3rd round.

but I agree, things just seem to go her way there.

come on -- Mauresmo in 2001 Grand Slams was like having a bye ;)

untrue! she did make two QFs that year.

Besides, for Tammy, that was a massive, massive victory. I think it might've been the best of her career.

What was AM ranked then? I know she was top 10....she won all those clay court matches.

I remember in Doha 01, Tami had a set-point on Hingis. I bet that was the best set of her life.

I'll say she loses in the 3rd round... so she copies her '97 Wimby performance.

Feb 15th, 2003, 12:09 AM
Amelie was 6.

Tammy took a set from Jen last year ...

I remember that Hingis match. Didn't she have three setpoints? Leading 6-3 in the tiebreak, I think? I could be wrong ...

I remember it was the 2nd set tiebreak and I was pissed and kept thinking "What if...."

I remember reading an article saying it was at 6-5 in the TB but it could have been more.

Where did she take a set from Jen?

King Lindsay

LA, I think? 6-3 6-7 6-2, jen won. Or maybe it was 6-3 6-7 6-4.

Wasn't that Hingis-tammy match 7-6 6-1?

It was LA, and the first score is right.

Hingis won 7-6, 6-1 also ;)

I had to check, but your memory is good enough for you

for creating this thread. :hearts:

Actually Tammy love to play fast court surface like grass court in Wimby. She felt confident like she was playing at home because the grass court surface is the same as practicing at home in Thailand. Fast court surface suit her game as she is taking the ball so early with her flat ground stroke and take first control the point. That is the reason why she has good record in Wimby.

:hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

She's improving her game a lot from the beginning of this year especially her serve. And she just won her first WTA title in Indian Open 2003. :D

I think the first thing she has to do now is to defend her last year points. She just lost more than 100 points in this week Doha as she lost in first round and she is going to defend 70 points in next week Dubai Open. If she could not do that she may not be seeded in French Open and Wimby.

I don't very much expect her to reach the QF of Wimby because the 25th-32th seeded will be drawn 1st-8th seeded in 4th round in Wimby. Hope she will be seeded and reach the 4th round again for 6 consecutive year. I will be happy if she can do that.

Do you best Tamarine. :worship: :worship: :worship:

The other possibility - she'll make the QF's or better;)!

Feb 15th, 2003, 06:48 AM
I think if she gets a decent draw, ie no Williams sisters, she'll get to the QF for the first time. But I'd be happy with another 4th round again.

5 consecutive 4th rounds is great - She's made it.
6 ..................................... is greater - She's likely to make it.
And,you know, I hope for the first quarterfinal from her

Feb 15th, 2003, 07:52 AM
i hope for the first grandslam from her

Feb 15th, 2003, 08:01 AM
i think she has a good chance to get to the 3rd round unless she comes across an unseeded player like kuznetsova, zvonareva, casanova or safina or even sharapova might be good enough for that sort of upset by wimbledon. but if kuznetsova, zvonareva and casanova play the way the did throughout last year then they should be seeded by then and safina might even be.

but i would expect a third round by tammy unless she meets a very good unseeded player. even someone like schett or kournikova can play well but that is hardly ever.

if she gets someone like maleeva or farina elia in the 4th round or an inconsistent player like stevenson or dementieva then tammy has a shot at the fourth round.

6th consecutive 4th round loss

Feb 16th, 2003, 08:06 AM
I think in the form she is in so far this year(ranked #11 in the Porch Standings:eek::bounce:), she can make the QF's. She just plays so well at Wimbledon, that she is never upset their. Who knows, if the draw opens up or something, we could see her even make SF's. But also she can lose in rd 1, like she nearly did last year(I was having a heart attack reading the live scores the next day, LOL). This is tennis - anything can happen!

But I am rooting for Tammy to WIN:kiss::bounce:

I'm bumping this just once before Wimbledon. Good luck to her, let's see how she does this time.

Continue the streak :)

Well she doesnt have a good draw this year, Morigami and Sprem could be quite tough but she'll have no problem with them. Capriati in the 3rd round is better than Venus or Serena, but still tough, she'll have to play her best tennis but on grass i think that is winnable. If shes good enough to beat Capriati a QF is a good possibility.

I hope that she will have 6th consecutive 4th round at Wimby but I choose she will lost to Jenny in 3rd round in the poll.

Best of Luck to Tammy
