Venus Advances To Antwerp Semi Showdown With Daniela

By Richard Pagliaro

While top designers were displaying fall fashion collections on the runways of Manhattan, noted fashion graduate Venus Williams was striding to the Proximus Diamond Games' semifinals in style. The defending champion slammed Slovakia's Tina Pisnik, 6-1, 6-4 in Antwerp today to set up a semifinal showdown with Daniela Hantuchova.

"I feel on top of my game," Williams said. "It was much more even in the second set. I had to hit a lot of balls. She didn't give me a lot of points."

The fourth-seeded Hantuchova withstood a tough test from France's Nathalie Dechy before prevailing, 7-6, 7-6, in her quarterfinal. It was the second consecutive challenge for Hantuchova, who rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Els Callens, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 yesterday.

Williams scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hantuchova in the Australian Open quarterfinals last month. The top-seeded Williams, who had a first-round bye, has dropped just eight games in reaching the final four.

Asked if she was planning to supply younger sister Serena with some of Antwerp's famed diamonds, Venus offered a fast reply.

"Get her some diamonds? I want to get me some," Venus said. "Every time I buy her something she loses it."

God I love this tournament......I really want Venus to win this one so she can be one more away from having that trophy!
