Both better step it up? Monica was injured in the AO, and she made the final in Tokyo. Monica is doing fine.

you honestly believe that she is doing fine...if some of her fans are making polls about who will have a better year against capriati who is on a losing streak, then i dont think she is doing fine...

I know a lot of people here enjoy picking the sentimental favorite, but realistically, if Jen gets her head back in the game she is a Slam-winner and top three player. So I'd say Capriati.

Monica, if and only if she stays fit and healthy.

I love them both, but got to give the edge to Jcap cause of her fitness.

I'll take the player who has lost 1 out of every 7 matches over her career versus the player who has lost 2 of 7.

No, on second thought, I'll take the player who wins 2 times out of 3 head to head.

I'll take the player that had the better year the last two in a row.

When all factors are constant, you can count on Jen. Jen is the kind of player to be in a slump one minute and win a slam the next. Last indoor season she lost at very opportunity but look what she did when she faced Serena who happened to be the most in form player last year. Maybe if she faced Serena in the opening rounds, every will power in her will be sprung into action.

DH r u a FH jen and Moni's H2H is 5-9 so it's not 2out of three in fact it's 2 all since 2001 (inclusive). Jen is fitter, stronger, faster & technically better, so i'll go with her

lots of wishful thinking here folks.

i know that all (ok, most) of the seles fans and williams fans like to see monica with a better year, for slightly different reasons (some williams fans will pick ANYONE over capriati)

but let's face the truth and the stats folks. capriati WILL have a better year, just like she has the past two years. true cappy may be in a slow decline, but i don't see monica turning into a fitness monster all of a sudden and reverse the decline she's had for years now.

I don't see how anyone here can be so sure of anything. Were any of you predicting in Jan 2001 that Jennifer would win two slams and become #1? She seemed unlikely to make the top 10. It's a very unpredictable sport. (And Jennifer, additionally, is a very unpredictable player. Consistency has not been her trademark.)

And by the way if Jen is "technically better" as well as fitter, then why has their head2head been even in the best two years of Jennifer's career (two years where Monica was often injured)?

Is Jen fitter? I haven't seen Monica lose a match on fitness in about a year, and Jen has been losing an awful lot of matches on something. As for technically better, I don't see it. Jen just bangs the ball, and doesn't go for the lines as much.

He must be referring to the beautiful technique Jennifer employs on her serve

I think Monica will if she stays injury free. Jen has been having lots of bad losses lately, and is being very inconsistent, but Monica hasnt had as many losses to low ranked players in the last year.

Monica appears to me to have a lil more fire in herself this year, which may make her have more success, while Jen is relaxing and just wants to compete since taking the williams pressure off her own shoulders. It all depends on who is hungrier, with fitness being the X factor if they are about even.

Right now I will say Monica.

Monica will do well, Jennifer will do better.

The reason why Jen will do better I believe is because she is fitter and faster than Monica at this point in time. Speed is a huge part of the game today, and Jen can happily retrieve Monica's shots.

Also, Jen can hang with pretty much anyone's pace including Williams x 2 and Monica, so I think that is also an asset for her. Monica can cope with power too, but when moving in relation to the power game is where she has problems (See point above).

Mentally, Monica has an edge. Most of Jen's losses are not sue to fitness, etc. but more down to her mentality. Although jen can be a real fighter.

IMO, Jen's true fight only comes against two players: Serena and Monica.

Jen just seems better 'equipped' for the want of a better word, for today's game. Fair enough Jen only won 1 title (a Slam), Monica only won 2 titles (I think?) Tier III & Tier II, which just illustrates that potentially this year, Jen has the game to do better.

I think Jen will have a better year (can't get much worse) now that she will not be squinting after every shot. And she works on that service toss!

Monica really just needs to get fit(when was the last time she truly was fit,98?) When she is on,hitting those angles, she is tough to beat.

I hope to see these two play each other a few more times before either desides to retire!!
