View Full Version : Match Report -Widjaja vs Dokic-

this was Jelena's first match of the season so understandably it took her more than a few games to get warmed up n used to the atomosphere. She was spraying errors all over the court in the first 5 games she lost. combined with Angie's steady n well thought play, She was going to be bagelled. I think Angie got nervous n started making the kind of mistakes she didnt at the beginning of the match. n Jelena finally started finding her range n hitting the ball harder n cotrolling it more accurately. in the first five games, there were many points that were dictated by Angie. but from then on, it was only one or two points a game Jelena didnt dictate. It took pre much no time for Jelena to come back n win five games running. the tiebreak was all Jelena though she lost a couple points by herself. it was like everything was up to her. Angie was just hitting balls back n had no choice but to wait Jelena to commite an error.
the second set went more like this way. Angie kept fighting n really kept up with Jelena score wise but it was Jelena who decided everything. guess the set could have been much more one-sided.. Jelena was holding her serve with great ease n had heaps of breakpoints in Angie service games. amazingly Angie saved all but the mach point.
from what i saw of Angie, she definitely needs to work on her footwork. she's kinda slow on the court n her defensive shots are nearly good enough to keep Jelena from attacking. just one good shot from Jelena pre much got Angie off balance n just an easy chance ball would come back only to be punished by Jelena. Angie's slice backhand is really bad...i mean it has no pace more like a lob which is too shallow to keep her oppponents behind the baseline. n guess she needs to play more agressive from the baseline. she can hit the ball when she s in the right position. but even then, she doesnt hit it away from her opponent n it s a very passive way of playing isnt it? she wasnt overpowered by Jelena but the reason why she hit so few winners from the baseline is that she rarely goes for the lines. she was just hitting back at Jelena even when she had the time to place the ball in the corner.
as for Jelena, she played some excellent points but rather inconsistently. she made quite a few amazingly stupid mistakes which i think helped the match stay close. her serve was pre good i guess despite some double faults. esp i was impressed by her 2nc serve...i dunno if that was her tactics but she hit the 2nd serve nearly as hard as the first one.. probly that contributed to the number of double faults.. but in the second set, Angie was struggling even returing the second serve..
her groundies were full of ups n downs. on one point she hit a great down the line backhand winner, then on the next point, she hit an easy putaway into the net... well..obviously she was at her best.

Great to hear Angie playing tough. Very good to hear Jelena's serve is good. Hopefully she picks up her game, leaves the rust and plays great tennis in her next matches.
