January 29, Wednesday@Angelique Widjaja (INE)
Singles 1R Defeated Mi-Ra Jeon 6-3 6-3

Q: This is your first time in this tournament and your first victory, can we have your opinion, your feelings right now? How do you feel after winning your first match?
A: Of course I am happy. Because this is the big tournament and this is my first time in this tournament, so itÕs good for me.

Q: You took a lead in the second set but then you seemed to be having some difficulties, were you taking time to get use to the surface?
A: This is my first time to play on this surface and this is my first match in this court. But I practiced maybe 4 days here so itÕs ok for me.

Q: Since your debut, since you started playing in the Tour, you have had won a title every year, what would be your hopes, your goals for this year.
A: I hope I can win the tournament again in this year. But my goal for this year is top 50 in WTA.

Q: This tournament is of course AsiaÕs biggest tournament, but itÕs also very early in the season, what does this tournament mean to you?
A: ItÕs like, this is the big tournament. Before I had to play qualifying, but I got wild card here, I would like to say thank you for the wild card from this tournament. This tournament is very good for me and for the entire player because this is the big tournament and we can get lot of points here also.

Q: You will probably be playing Dokic next, do you have any plans on how you will approach the game against her?
A: I never played against her before. I know she is a good player. This is good for me also because IÕll have opportunity to play against top player. So IÕll try my best tomorrow. Because I donÕt have pressure also for me, so IÕll try my best.
----------------------------

Good luck Angie against Dokic tomorrow.

jirobkk it depends...i mean depends on whether they put the match on the court 1... if so, it will be aired. they only show the matches on the court 1. I'm pre sure Angie's match against Jelena will be played on the court 1 meaning they show it on tv. I really hope Tammy's match also will be plaed on there. let me check tomorrow's schedule n i ll get back to ya... wait a sec

So, have you been to Indonesia? Well, I am sorry to know that you had bad experience with Indonesian food...Resto food are not authentic...I am surprised they have one in Kyoto...They used to have it in Osaka-city...I went to "Bengawan Solo" resto in Roppongi once and it was not bad...My Japanese pals were happy right before we went to disco in Shibaura...Great memory!  :wavey:

I was in Fukuoka for a year! I loved it so much! I came to Japan without any word in Nihongo...I was on an exchange student program for high school back then...I stayed with wonderful Japanese family - father was Taipei born and was from Sendai, Kagoshima-pref and mother is from Hagi, Yamaguchi-pref...Father was an internist...while my own dad was gynecologist...I stayed with this family in a country side an hour drive west of Fukuoka city...and I went to school in the city...I had to commute by bike and train everyday...Since then, I have been back for several times including Niigata, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Yamanashi, Yokohama and Tokyo...I love Nihon very much! Actually I wrote my own song about Fukuoka and I wonder if I could record it there with Yamashita Tatsuro or Yuming!!! Last time, I was performed my golden voice at wedding party of my friend at New Otani Hotel in Hakata...Just love Hakata Ramen...Nagahama...Yum yum yum!!!

Yeah Hakata Ramen is always one of the best!!! I often get treated with it. No, I've never been to Indoneisa though i ve always wanted to... i have a few friends over there, some in Jakarta, n some in other part of Java Island. I really wanna make a visit there n have the reunion with my friends there. do you speak chinese? since a lot of my indo friends speak chinese or some chinese dialect as well as indonesian. it s very interesting.
I have been to kyoshu only once in my life..that was on my school trip to nagasaki.. I dont quite remember the trip as i was like 10 or something back then...hehe.. but i remember I bought some nagasaki kasutera for my family. that was yammy!!
by the way, I really like Angie.. She s like my type hehe... I wish i lived in tokyo then i could ve gotten to see her...

Thank you so much. I hope they will show Tammy vs Farina match on TV.

My Head Office is in Osaka and the factory is located in Yao-shi. I'm serveral time visiting Osaka for my business trip. I also had a great time in Kyoto and Nara.

Lokamaya,
I would agree with you that it will be interesting experience if you take the train from KL to BKK.

gogomaggie...Sakai eh...Yup, I have passed it by once...No, I do not know any Chinese dialect...just some words...I am originally from Central Java so I am Javanese...My 1st language is Javanese language, one of the oldest languages in the world...Javanese culture is very dominant here...The old Javanese scripts are similar like Thai's...Do you play indoor tennis now? I used to like Shuzo Matsuoka, Kimiko Date and Naoko Sawamatsu...I have met Matsuoka and Sawamatsu when they came to Jakarta for a tourney in mid 1990s...I follow Japanese news on regualr basis...I used to work for Japan's track and field team when they participated here at the Asian T & F Competition...One of my faves were Masami Yoshida...he did javelin...from Wakayama and a male sprinter - but I forgot his name - he is from Kagoshima...

jirobkk...Is it safe to travel up there from KL? Just curious...Actually, I have friends in Bangkok but I have not been in touch for many years...I am so bad...They are not really good friends but I met them in Japan and USA...:wavey:

well... as i had never seen Angie play before, it s hard for me to say if she played up to her standard today... I only heard a bit about her game, but yeah..like everyone says, she doesnt hit the ball that hard..she rather hits very clean n places it well on the court. I dont think she played as well as she could ve played today..i mean probly because that was her first match on this surface, it took her some getting used to.. Mi-ra was also not at her best as far as i could see.. she wasnt agressive enough n rather timid when the opportunity arose.. but at the end of the day, it was Angie who took advantage of her opponent weaknesses. I'm sure Angie will raise her level in the next match or else she will have no chance against Dokic. but I'm pre optimistic about her chance. today i only saw her a flash of her talents but it was obvious that she could play a high standard tennis if she really wanted to.. so let s wait n see what happnes tomorrow!!!

I've watched Angie play many times. And as far as I know she is hitting very very good semi-moonball, probably her best shot in the women tour IMO.

Fun reading the conversations today. :)

Oh- Super Sports Channel 22 is showing the
Toray PPO in the middle of February. A little late;but
I'm not complaining.

I'm kind of bummed that they're showing less
Japanese tv shows over here in Singapore. I
can't get into those squeaky clean Korean
boy/girl dramas. lol.

SAKAI NOT SAKE, RIGHT?...LOL...and JIRO BANGKOK'S RULER...

Angie does moon balling whenever she needs to...She uses it when she knows that her opponent can get confused and she does it sometimes as part of her strategy...So, she doesn't use it all the time...She is good in mixing -up actually and I hope, she can give moon ball lesson a bit to Jelena...Power hitter does not like to get moon ball... :wavey:

Shine On Silver Moon
Jan 29th, 2003, 09:10 AM
Yup...we do get the same Korena dramas here...as well as F4/Meteor Garden...F$ just came to Jakarta for 2 nights show...I have no fond of this group...They are okay...not great world class...I prefer Billy Joel in the past and he is still good...I have watched BJ's concerts a couple times!!! :wavey:

GoGoMaggie
Jan 29th, 2003, 09:13 AM
I think if Jelena's grounds are off, Angie's moonballs should work really well for her causing Jelena a lot of frustration. but if Jelena comes out strong n concenctrated, then they may not work so well if not backfiring. I mean when you play moonballs, you gotta chosee the right timing otherwise you are just giving your opponent a chance ball.. so Angie needs to make sure when she s playing one, it does have some logical purpose such as taking time or getting back to the middle of the court. as far as i could see, Angie hits her backhand harder than her forehand but then again when she s on the defensive she covers her forehand side better as Shuzo Matsuoka, who was comentating during the matc, pointed out. probly Angie needs to work on her defensive backhand like effective single backhand slice.

jirobkk
Jan 29th, 2003, 09:20 AM
I mean semi-moonball.... not moonball

Angie has great semi-moonball.

The players who have great moonball are ASV and Conchita Martinez.

Jan 29th, 2003, 09:32 AM
Great observation and comments and I certainly agree with you on mooonballing...OMG, Matsuoka was commentating? How old is he now? Is he married man? What is he doing now professionally? Just as commentator? Which TV station do you watch?:) :wavey:
