View Full Version : Is there a conspiracy against the Russians?

I've noticed that the Russian players have had the most horrible "luck" of the draw so far this year. In almost every tournament I can think of so far, I've seen quite a number of them bunched up in the draw, not to mention the 3 or 4 times two of them have met in the first round. This tournament is probably the worst I've observed this year. Krasnoroutskaya will face Petrova first round and the winner will most likely take on Bovina in the second round. ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE DRAW you have Dementieva and Panova possibly squaring off in the second round (although I think Elena will lose to Meghann). If you account for the byes that Seles and Rubin have, there are 5 Russians among the 14 players in the top half of the draw (35.71%).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Russian backer whining of unfair treatment but I think these young players have talent and I'd like to see them last longer in the draws without them picking each other off. I guess it's just unfortunate but it's happened enough already to make you wonder.

i think you gave the answer yourself (and i said this in another thread): there's a whole bunch of russian players, so naturally there's a big possibility they draw each other - seems pretty logical to me...

What Eggy said :D

It's a shame they're clumping, but that's what is going to happen as the number of Russians in the Top 100 increase from 10 to 20-25. :)

Panova lost (and Dementieva won). So they won't face one another. Problem solved ;) in this respect.

Did you notice that two Koreans play one against another in the Q2? What were the probabilities for this to happen? I think even scarcer. BAD LUCK again.

I dont like this either. It seems weird that they always have to play each other. Bovina has had to play a Russian in the first round of all three events she played so far this year. Lina and Nadia are both coming back from injury and one has to lose.
They always do this with Asian players too, and there arent too many of those. This year already Widjaja has had to play an Asian in the first round a few times.
