After losing the Oz final, Venus Williams said the following: "The first thing I'll do is go to McDonalds. I want my cheeseburger with French fries and a soda."

The quote was taken from this site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/australian_open/2003/2693967.stm

First of all, I want to say I have been indifferent to the Williams sisters for many years now. I can honestly say I am not biased one way or the other. But what in heaven's name is Venus thinking when she says something like this. She calls herself a "tennis player"???? More importantly, this quote signifies how Venus is growing complacent with the state of her game. It is clear she is content with being in second-place. She is clearly not willing to change her game in anyway to defeat Serena. Any respectable athlete has a desire to strive for something better. Venus doesn't have this desire. I can only conclude she is not a respectable athlete.

--------------------

I cannot believe someone said that. Was she paid?

SM
Jan 26th, 2003, 09:11 AM
err i think she meant after making the final of a slam and nearly winning shes earned herself a treat. Its not that big of a sin, and wont harm her unless she incoporates it as a staple part of her diet. I agree that shes obviously being paid to promote it tho ;)

after that hard fought match (Venus did most of the running from side to side), she definetely wants to relax. Venus is a simple lady and this is the reason why she is a happy person. Unlike others like JenCap, who after her loss would go smoke, drink, etc.:p

"Serena was guesting on Friends for like 4 or 5 episodes? But I haven't heard anything? You?"

now this is shocking'

serena you deserve so much better :p

Yuk!, boiled eggs make me think about that episode from Jackass where they eat as many as they can, then start throwing up *gags*

*thinking Cheeseburger* *getting hungry* *looking for food* *doesn't find food* *runs to neighbors house* *looks for sandwich* *doesn't find sandwich* *goes home crying*

*incredibly bored*

Why not a quarterpounder with cheese and a LARGE fries? Maybe a nice chocolate shake as well. She's a big girl, and she's been working hard.

Go, Venus!

(LMAO, what am I saying?)

I usually "read" or "hear" shocking quotes. I haven't "seen" any qoutes yet..... ;):p

The most shocking quote I have ever heard is Mary Carillo saying,"Monica Seles milked the stabbing for what it was worth." Stupid B*tch! Just because she sounds like a man and looks like a drag queen doesn't excuse her to beat up on others when they are down.

Oh how shocking. Many players treat themselves at the end of a grand slam event to something they don't normally eat. I think they've worked hard enough to deserve it. Martina Navratilova used to allow herself the treat of a very fattening Czech recipe of duck with some dumplings only if she won Wimbledon. That was before she saw sense and became a vegetarian of course.

Actually I thought it was a funny comment from Venus. She's just showing the press that even though she's disappointed with the loss, life DOES move on.

Nothing shocking about that. People can indulge in whatever they want after they lose. Last year at Sydney they were interviewing tennis players and Roddick said he liked McDonalds, and Kim said she liked to eat KFC. So she wouldnt be the only one eating fast food.

I say "Enjoy that burger and fries, Venus. You've earned it." At least we know she eats. *cough* Anyone seen Daniela around? No? Me either. ;)

I am really irritated by those anti-McDonald and anti-Burger-king people. If I was a millionaire athlet, the one thing I would do is build my own McDonald in my mansion that would only serve me and my guests. :o

McDonalds is a SPONSOR of Venus and Serena.

Haven't any of you seen the commercial???

Venus got in a free plug for her sponsor!

I'm sure they are quite happy.

I went to play tennis on Saturday and i went to McDonalds afterwards!

I still don't know what the problem is too.

I think the most shocking thing is that some people refuse to see tennisplayers are human beings who even have to go to the toilet;)

lmao about Mary Pierce. Eh no shock here, shameless promo for McDonalds, she probably went there anyway. The girl certainly deserved it. I mean before a fashion show, I have to eat good food and then right after it I go and eat fast food or sweets because I haven't been able to eat any kind of bad food for like two weeks.

Uhm, didn't you read Venus's after match interview????

------------------------------------------------------------
Q. What will you do tonight?
VENUS WILLIAMS: What will I do? Well, the first thing I'll do is I'll go to McDonald's. I want my double cheese burger with French fries and a soda. Yes.
Second, of course I'll pack my bags and maybe I'll have a dessert (laughing). Things like that.
------------------------------------------------------------

I can't believe you thought she was gonna go out and work on her second serve that night. Hell, I certainly wouldn't after a long match. After two long weeks, I'd treat myself too.

Those sites suck because they never get the quotes right, and they always take them out of context. Shame on you for believing it.

Both her and Serena sponsor the McDonald's $1 menu. That's probably why she said it. It is hilarious though... oh well, money can make you say strange things.

lol, I wasn't the one making the comment...I meant to say "was HE paid"? (David Beckham).

I'm not surprised that Venus said that...but he was the one who called Venus not a respectable athlete cuz of her comments.

I love Venus! :hearts:

You hypocrites, really make me laugh. You are worried, concerned or even angry that someone is promoting a fast food company (any company for that matter) that is paying them over six figures. Of course she mentioned McDonalds! Why wouldn’t she.

Please do not give me that “fast food is bad for you” crap. Your favorites (or not) Anna Kournikova and Martina Hingis are both smokers. Tell me which one would be worst for a “TENNIS PLAYER?”

Cut the crap and grow up!

I have spoken to a lot of the tennis players on the circuit and they all say that after a tournament they like to indulge themselves in something they like.
It's not like eating one unhealthy meal is going to make them fat, that is only true if you eat it over a long period of time.
For tennis we had to go to a dietician and they told us things like during a tournament make sure you eat the right kinds of foods and then after the tournament you can indulge in something.

I think it is disgusting that Venus is being sponsered by an evil conglomorate like Mcdonalds, which is responsible for the American obesity problem, particularly among children. She is an athlete and a role model and should therefore have more respect for herself and her fans. She needs to take a reality check- both sisters live on cloud cucckoo land, if you ask me.

Fast food is simply meant to be a meal you have because of convenience (ie your in a hurry) and you cant lay blame on anyone if you choose to have it as an integral part of your daily diet.

Im sure most obese ppl love to over indulge around the clock whether it be at 'home' or at a fast food outlet in foods high in sugars/fats.

If someone was paying me money six digits plus to promote anything i would, and im sure you would too.
