He was quoting Barbra calling Andre a "Zen master" when they were quasi-dating. He wasn't quoting one of her songs or anything.

Biofile: The Jim Courier Interview

By Scoop Malinowski
01/25/2003

A decade ago, the Rock was on a roll. Clad in his trademark baseball cap, Jim Courier dismantled opponents with a fierce inside-out forehand and a fighting spirit that carried him to the top of tennis.

Courier captured four Grand Slam titles, including consecutive Slams at the Australian Open and Roland Garros that launched him to the No. 1 ranking in 1992.

As a pro, Courier earned a reputation as one of tennis’ top competitors, but as a junior player it was the desire to attend college—rather than pursuing his place on the pro circuit—that was the Sanford, Florida native’s primary motivation. But those plans went awry after Courier unexpectedly won the Vina del Mar Challenger in Chile in 1988. Instead of college, he turned pro. The rest is history.

Courier won his first ATP event in Basel the next year in 1989—coming back from a two sets-to-one deficit against Stefan Edberg. He would shock the tennis world by conquering Roland Garros in 1991 and ‘92. He became the first American since Tony Trabert in 1954 and 1955 to win two straight French Open championships. Two Australian Open titles in '92 and '93 completed his collection.

All in all, Courier won 23 singles titles and six doubles titles. He helped the U.S. win the Davis Cup in 1995 in Moscow. Now, Courier is a Davis Cup coach for Patrick McEnroe's team of James Blake, Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish. He is also a highly respected television commentator for TNT and ESPN's tennis broadcasts.

In this interview, the man who played doubles with Pete Sampras and played drums with REM discusses some of his favorite things.

Status: Former world No. 1, captured two Roland Garros championships and two Australian Open champions. A passionate Davis Cup player and current coach of the U.S. Davis Cup team.

Height: 6-1 Weight: 177

Born On: August 17th, 1970 in Sanford, Florida.

Childhood Heroes: "Pete Rose, Roger Staubach, Borg, Mac, Connors."

Nicknames: "That I can tell you, for a family magazine (smiles)? Jimbo as a kid. Mostly from people back home (call me that). And my dad still does too. And Rock. A lot
of guys on the tour called me Rock from time to time."

Hobbies/Interests: "Music, other sports, golf, play guitar and drums."

Early Tennis Memory: "Winning the first tournament, getting the first trophy. I won the consolation trophy in the 10 & under event when I was eight. Just being able to come home with a little trophy—that was a big moment. I lost in the first round. And they had like another tournament for the first round losers. The first tournament I played (age seven), I lost in the first round 7-5 in the third. Choked like a dog. Oh, I definitely cried."

Funny Tennis Memory: "People ask me if I have any funny stories like that. The times I was at Bollettieri's tennis camp, when we'd sneak out in the middle of the night. The boys and the girls—we'd all sneak out, take our racquets with tennis balls at 2 a.m. and have like these tennis ball wars where they were building stuff. Me, Mark Knowles, Mal Washington. So we were like firing balls at each other from like close range. Of course we all got caught and had to wash cars and pick the weeds the next day (smiles)."

Favorite Movies: "Fletch, The Usual Suspects. I love movies."

Musical Tastes: "REM, U2, Collective Soul, Matchbox Twenty, Cool For August."

Pre-Match Feeling: "A little anxious to get out on the court and get a sweat going. The thoughts vary from day to day. Depending on how breakfast was, usually."

Favorite Meal: "A nice steak and fries, nice red wine would be fine."

Favorite Breakfast Cereal: "Honey Nut Cheerios."

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: "Mint chocolate chip, for sure."

Greatest Sports Moment: "Winning my first Grand Slam. The last point in Paris (1991 French Open vs. Andre Agassi). Just one of those moments that changes your life. I hit an ace. Just sucked it up, threw it up there and hit an ace. Then fell to the ground."

Most Painful Moment: "Probably the same court, two years later. Losing in five sets to Bruguera (in the 1993 final). Up an early break (in the fifth set) but I started cramping. Running out of gas."

First Job: "Tennis player."

First Car: "1984 white VW Jetta, diesel. Hand-me-down from my grandmother. It got me everywhere I needed to go in high school."

Closest Tennis Friends: "Mark Knowles—we grew up together. Jonathan Stark. Guys I grew up playing with. Although I was very friendly with most of the guys on the tour. I got along with virtually everybody. And I liked it that way."

Worst Injury: "Hyperflexed knee. I have really been lucky with the injuries. To this point, no surgeries."

Favorite Vacation Spot: "Hawaii is the best place I've been to. Had everything - great golf, great snorkeling and great food. That was nice."

People Qualities Most Admired: "People that live every day like it's their last, basically. That live with integrity. And that leave it all on the line, in every aspect of their life. Because I think that's the only way to live."

At the 1998 Canadian Open, Monica gave an interview. Since the tournament was being held in Montreal that year, a reporter asked her if she could speak French. Monica said she had been meaning to learn the language but so far hadn't found the time. The reporter then suggested she find herself a nice, French boyfriend to teach her. Giggling, Monica then added, "Yeah, like Jim Courier."

Either way, what does Barbara Streisand have to do with being gay. Some people here are acting as if someone likes Barbara it means that he's automatically gay? Obviously some of you know nothing about sex

But you are missing the point of her joke, at least if you are implying what you seem to be.

Famously, Jim Courier delivered part of his 1992 Roland Garros victory speech in French, and he was known for speaking to the ballboys in French as well as genuinely trying to learn the language. Quite an impressive feat for a mono-lingual youngster from Dade City, Florida, and one which certainly endeared him to many Parisian fans.

Monica was also a titlist that year, beating Graf in that epic 10-8 third set battle, so this piece of tennis folklore, Courier's "mastery" of the French language, was probably what she alluded to.

And not some reference to Jim's dating habits.

So the joke should have been that we, french people are sexually free? :D I wonder where this cliche comes from. Do you joke about that sometimes?

I remember Courier's speech. It was in 1992 and the second sentence in his speech him to a lot of people. He said "Excusez-moi, je parle français comme une vache espagnole" (which means "I'm sorry, I speak french like a spanish cow" :D.)

During the semi-final in Davis Cup last year, he was interviewed and he speaks french quite good I must say. He even reads papers in french and tried to read novels.
