Jan 26th, 2003, 12:56 AM
congrats martina on winning her 1st ever mix doubles title at the australian open :D

Jan 26th, 2003, 12:56 AM
Also she is the first ever to win singles, doubles and mixed doubles at ALL FOUR SLAMS!!!

How close is Serena to equalling this - just a couple of mixed away isn't she?

Jan 26th, 2003, 12:58 AM
Just checked - Serena needs Australian Open and French Open mixed titles to equal Martina's historic record.

It was great to watch - Channel 7 showed most of th ematch here in Aus... Martina's smile at the end of the match made my day!!! She was so nervous and shaky towards the end I was biting my teeth - but Danillidou was even worse - Her serve was terrible with countless double faults... But great win for the Champions. She promised to come back here next year and said that her and Leander would play Mixed at all 4 Grand Slams this year...

The legend keeps on growing! Congrats, Martina! She also becomes the oldest ever slam champion, beating the prior record by 1 month! And she has now won slam titles in 4 different decades!

She joins the very exclusive group of Margaret Court and Doris Hart to have accomplished this complete collection. I wonder if Serena will shoot for it if she were told?

Congratulations! At Martinas age it is an incredible acheivement! And she played really well too, only she got nervous at the end, understably. She really is the greatest ever!

dinosaurS ? why plural? Hey, poor Leander is only 29 and is not a dinosaur yet, guys! .. He is younger than the singles champion out there. Now there is a champion dinosaur, if you need one! :)

Leander's post game comments: "I grew up, my whole childhood, watching Martina play, create history winning those many Wimbledon titles. I never thought I'd be on the same side of the net as her .. Her zest for life, her passion for the game is mind-boggling. I'm going to be 30 this year and I felt I was getting old. Martina has kind of rejuvenated my spirit for the game. I'm very thankful for that."

Martina's comment when she heard Leander say the above - "Wow, that's the nicest thing I heard all day, all week!" .. She also said, "The spirit goes both ways. Leander makes it fun to be on the court with, spiritually and of course tennis-wise. We both know how to play doubles, and that's what really makes it fun. I'm there where I should be and he's there where he should be, playing the right shots. It's sort of tennis the way it should be played. That's the most fun part of it all .. She continued, "I thought we had a chance. You know, you need luck. I think my lucky thing was running into Leander, intercepting him on the way to the referee's office"

Good stuff!

What a great win for Martina, and to capture the one title she didn't have, is great for her! I hope Czechfan saw it on TV, or even in person! Maybe this will spurn her on to play in Australia next year so her fans can see her again.
