The 2003 women's Oz final was not a classic, but despite some errors in play, it was a very good final.

http://www.ausopen.org/images/pics/large/b_25_01_sv_williams_l.jpg

VENUS & SERENA played three tough, competitive sets with a few really great rallies and both players showed how much each one wanted to win the down under title.

VENUS had more errors than in any of her previous matches leading up to the finals, but none of her opponents were as formidable as little sis either.

It seems that their future matches will get even better and by the time they play in the 2004 U.S. Open final (yes, they will play each other again), VENUS & SERENA will be having some truely classic matches.

It was definately their best match yet, and there were some outstanding rallies. Shame there were so many errors, but I think both girls were nervous and very fired up. Even I was nervous for the first time ever watching them play against each other. I really wanted Venus to put up a good fight and she did. Shame her forehand let her down a bit.

Still, I think I would prefer to see one of the girls competing against someone else in a final to make the rivalry even more intriguing. But as you say TeeRex, if they keep on producing good quality matches like this than that makes it interesting for the average fan.

TeeRex,

The vast majority of people bitching about V&S finals are natural HATERS. It doesn't matter if the Sistahs win 7-6,6-7,7-6 with 100 winners and 3 UFE' EACH. The will still bitch because we have two blacks girls from Compton DOMINATING girls of European ancestry. All this BULL about their error-filled matches is really a red herring. Anyone ever check out a Clijsters-Henin match stat sheet lately?

I hate to break the news to the haters, but the GWH's are still in the embryonic stages.

And that's the way I see it.

I beg to differ with your opinion about the "majority of people bitching about V&S finals are natural HATERS".

I think the majority of people (myself included) would love to see finals which included one of the Williams sisters and one other player so it is like a rivalry where the players really (I mean really) want to kick each other's butts.

Whether it's a match up like:
One of the Williams sisters v Kim / Lindsay / Jen / Monica etc

or even a Williams sister v Chanda Rubin would be fantastic.

I just think that because the sisters care so much about each other, people (gross generalisation here) don't think they can be as interesting a rival to each other as someone else against one of them can be. Anyway, that's my personal opinion.

Calabar and TeeRexx, the reason why *neutral* tennis lovers don't like Williamses' finals is that a *real* rivalry between two sisters is difficult to be set.
Until they live and grow together, that is.
I assure you that here in Italy nobody cares about the colour of their (or anybody else's) skin.

calabar - Funny and interesting opinion that may be all to true.

TV - If watching the top two players play great tennis is not good enough for you then maybe you might want to consider becoming a fan of ics skating.
Lindsay, Jenn and Monica all had their time of domination and now it is the WILLIAMS time for their run.
Chanda will not have the game to beat a WILLIAMS in GS Final and Kim will have to get over her issues of losing the big events to SERENA.

Well, at any rate, VENUS & SERENA will be out of tennis in 4-5 years and then you can come back to tennis as it once was in the good old days, I guess.

Thank you Tee Rexx! :)

And I hope that now the non-Williams fans will stop bitching that we are all the same. Can't they see that Venus's fans are disappointed and did anybody notice there's no "Congratulations Serena" threads except for mine. You see you guys? Give us a break and stop thinking that we're all the same. Go look at joy's thread and you'll see that are tons more Venus fans than Serena fans and some Venus don't even really care for Serena! Imagine that! :p

As I said last year, just watch the semis and pretend they are the finals.

No Tee they will always complain about Sister Slam finals regardless of the actual play on the courts.

They are the two best defensive players in the history of the game and along with Graf and Navrat two of the four best attacking players in the history of the game.

The only way one will beat the other is by "going for it" and when you go for it you get UFE's and double faults. As long as there are UFE's and double faults, thats all some of the ignorant morons of the world will see when the Sisters play.

Lindsay v. Henin was a double chokefest and yet the commentators are trying to raise it to the level of a tennis classic. I won't even get into the mythology building around the Chucky Choke this time last year...

I don't care, because I am getting exactly what I want.

The complainers can all go to hell.

I have never been a 'hater' although i am a Kim fan and wanted her in the final, but only because i am a Kim fan, nothing against the sisters, but the final today was really exciting and competitive and although I would like to see someone else make a final soon for a bit of a change, as long as the sisters can have great finals like that people should just enjoy them rather than say they are ruining the game.

Tee Rex

How rude!

If you read my first post you would see that I did enjoy the final. Why else would I be nervous??? And I happened to be cheering for Venus.

I didn't say I didn't enjoy it. I did enjoy it. All I said was that I would "prefer" to see one of them play against someone else as it would be more interesting a match up. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy Serena v Venus match ups. In fact, I loved their match today and even had it recorded on DVD so I could keep it. Same with their Doubles win.

I am a genuine tennis fan who has been following the sport for 30 years. And I love watching the sport no matter who is playing (unlike many people who only take an interest when their particular faves are playing). And I will be following the sport with a passion for the rest of my days. So in the future can you please not twist my posts and come out with ridiculous comments. Thanks very much.

Joy/Kiwi - You two are good and very insightful fans.

Joy, you are so right, those fans do not waNt to support either of the WILLIAMS as they do other players.
Maybe they are afraid of what the other people will think if they are cheering for one or both of the WILLIAMS.

TV - Sorry that I misread your intentions and I am glad that you really enjoy good tennis, no matter who is playing in the match.

How a match can be more intersting and intriguing than two siblings who are ranked #1 and #2 is still a little odd to me.

I can, however, accept those who want their faves in a final with a WILLIAMS rather than those who just want "anybody" other than a WILLIAMS in the finals for reasons that may be totally unrelated to tennis.

No worries Tee Rex. Thanks for your note.

Just to clarify, I would feel exactly the same if it was Maggie Maleeva playing against one of her older (now retired) sisters eg. Manuela. It is the same when Olivier Rocchus plays his brother Christophe or in the past when Chris Evert played Jeanne. I just don't get as excited about sibling rivalries. From my perspective I would rather see two people play each other who 'despise' each other. Then it feels more like combat. We all know how much Serena & Venus love each other so it doesn't seem like war when they step on the court against each other... although today it looked close to that! LOL

Anyway, congrats to Serena. She was awesome today! And it was great to see her so emotional at the presentation.

I am just hoping Venus can win a Slam title soon as I fear her confidence must be rattled somewhat.

FIFA has taken Italian crowds to task for having organized clubs with RACIST chants against black players?

Italians complained bitterly when a woman of African descent was selected to represent Italy in a major beauty pagent.

Schillachi (sorry for the spelling) leading scorer in the Italian world cup was protested because he was Sicillian and Sicillians often get black racial taunts hurled at them in the rest of Italy.

"They are African not Italian" being a mild one.

Your hands are not clean.

I get sick of the lies from Euros who think they don't have racial issues.

There are bad people everywhere and there are good people everywhere so stop the lies. They don't help the reality and make you look like a

I'm not trying to pick a fight, but if you can't be honest about your country you can't really address the issues. Denial and benign neglect are more dangerous than overt racism these days because overt racists are usually marginallized and shunned.

I came to the conclusion last night, that its not BORING because of their games against each other- its the crowds- it was so silent at times--- i can't understand why people can't really get behind one player- its them not Venus & Serena that have problems with playing each other but i will stop all that when i go to the US open this year, if its a Sister Slam Again- i will rally that crowd to get really noisy in cheering Venus

It really is the Atmosphere out there that is drab--not their games against each other!!

Thats the spirit joy.:wavey:

V and S played a very competitive match!!!!!:)

I thought this match was really really good. The first set was ok tennis, but I was really impresed with the level of play in the second sed, and almost as much in the third. I have never openly cheered for Venus until then, and it was sad seeing her lose.

All over the world people there are the idiots, but the vast majority of the world population consist of very decent people.

In the meantime we can, hopefully, peacefully enjoy the sport of tennis. :)

Exactly, TeeR.!
And, Kiwifan, all you say is absolutely right and I can add tons of bad example especially for the soccer world you quoted.
But in tennis there's no such thing
And, secondly and most important, this is not a "national" feeling!!
*inside* racism is, it is strong and violent
(there's even a party who would like Italy were split into two!!!)
:(
And there's a widespread diffused ill feeling towards Arabs and *activist* Muslims (Fundamentalists, that is)
But no, not against black people.
As far as my antiracism can go, as far as my antifascism can go, I wouldn't hide it if Italians were racists towards blacks but I can't even go so far to say they are.
It's not true, trust me.
I was even finishing my last post saying that in sport there's a "slight" condiscence towards them...........
:)
Everytime we can adopt a "black", especially in football, we eagerly do it, deeply convinced he must be a champion!

Back to the topic, the final was well played and was much better than what the commentators expected and did not really exploit that fact.

But, if you want other players in the GS finals, get them to get out and practice. Properly. :)

I have noticed that at almost every match when V&S play each other (especially the slams), people don't know who to root for.
That's why you get cries of "Go Williams" and "Go Serenus.

There is still a large number of people who cannot separate them from each other. In a way, that's to be expected.
After all their sisterhood is what REALLY makes them special (along with being African American).

And while there may be nefarious motives for some, I honestly believe that MOST people at the finals are (perhaps subconsciously) trying to avoid hurting either sister's feelings by pulling for one over the other.

Way, cheers to you. Like I said not trying to pick a fight, just make a point.

Thank you for understanding.

I also understand how others would prefer only one sister in the finals of a slam.

I just prefer things just the way they are, let the crowd be damned if its awkward for them.

Venus and Serena in every slam until they retire is just fine by me!

All Williams finals are fine, BUT

Serena d. Venus finals are NOT fine.

Imagine Serena d. Venus for the NEXT 4 SLAMS again? :o

No thanks.

Imagined the puzzled look on a 10 year old tennis player about 20 years from now when he looks at the Grand Slam recorda and ask, "Hey, dad, did these two sisters really play each other in 15 Grand Slam finals?" :)

If they play like that from now on, I have no reason to bitch. I turned on the final thinking "Oh man here we go again, I really hope this is at least bearable." They made some errors, but they played at a very high level. And the ground they covered was just fucking unbelievable. Furthermore, it looked like they cared, which is different from usual. Venus (gasp!) showed some emotion out there, and Serena was very fired up. Great stuff!

BTW, how did Serena react when she won the match. Was it calm like usual or did she jump up and down?
