Gee I'm feeling old already.

But this is for those who saw the 1993 Australian Open final. It's been THAT long! I was 13 at that time, watching the best womens' match ever in my opinion. That still stands.

I remember that match so well, so many points, I should get a tape of it sometime again. Here's to tomorrow's final, hoping it be as good as that.

Anybody else want to reminisce about it?

Well imo, it really was the final nail in the coffin for Graf in the Graf v Seles rivalry (anything added to the rivalry after 96 has an asterix against it imo)...

But for Monica to win so comprehensively on hardcourt in Graf's prime, after having the wood on her on clay in grand slams and Graf having it on grass, Monica's dominance at both the USO and Aus Open really sealed the edge in the rivalry over the years 1990-1993 imo...

It was a good match, but I dont think its the best ever, maybe it would scrape into my top 10 matches of all time...

I recall Monica having a great ability to expose Graf's backhand weakness, and really overpowered her...

steffi never lost to a certain player on hardcourt, she did on rebound ace. I might be wrong but I don't think she even lost a set to that player on hardcourt even when that player was at her absolute prime and confident (and steffi not so much, magui serna says enough and that was just 1,5 week before)

so I think there is a difference on the surface.

oh yeah at that moment for one second I thought monica was better then steffi. then I saw a pic and I knew I was wrong

a week later I was convinced that I was thinking crap;)

LOL@Irma.

Will you be my lover, if we don't have to talk about Steffi?

irma

OK, how about we only talk about Steffi on weekdays.

You've charmed me, I'm ready to negotiate for your body.

Monica actually won a 6:0 set against Steffi as the US open final on her comeback in '95! And that was her first Grandslam for over two years!

don't know why I always use novotna as example. I guess because it seemed that she played steffi at every tournament;)

The Graf and Seles Aus Open final, pretty much was the match that showed that Seles was more mentally tough than Steffi during this time.

Perfect day
A surface they both were successful on
Crowd on Steffi's side
Both looked fit and well......

The court was set for the ultimate battle....

The match was up for grabs in the 3rd set, but Monica put the foot on the pedal and ran away with it. I think Steffi's game retreated when the match was up for grabs, whereas Monica knew how to win.

I've seen better matches for quality, but for the drama, stage and the aura of the two combatants it's up there with the best matchs.

It feels like more than ten years to me. I was ten years old.

I remember watching it only cos my mum was (she was a big big moni fan) andwalking around the living room driving her nuts trying to emulate Monica's grunts. I didnt know much about tennis, but i wanted Seles to win and i kinda appreciated her power....most of it is a blur really

Referring to Graf's injuries, you mean?
Yes, you have a point!!!

No seals, Philbo.
Seles never dominated Graf.
And Graf 91-93 was for from her best

You should choose matches you've seen *live*, imho.
Otherwise you tend to have mixed feelings, as you clearly have for the early 90s, which, for obvious reasond, you can't remember.

Yes, that is true.
Mentally.
That's why their head to head was even, maybe 4-3 Seles of we take Monica's best period.
But Graf was coming back.
