Go Martina & Leander! Hi Phil!

The last time Martina played Todd in a Grand Slam final (1993 U.S. Open), she lost. So I think Todd & Danilidou will definitely be the favorites.

I hope Martina & Leander can pull off the upset. :)

Zummi!!! Hey Andrew!!! Isnt it just great????

Ive got so much good Martina footage this tournament, Ive got from 1-3 15-40 down in the 3rd set in her first round womens doubles match plus a lengthy interview with Bruce McAvaney where she jokes about not having Serena's cleavage!! lol

Ive also got the whole 2nd round match where her and Svetlana demolished the oppositon (already forget who!!lol) - Martina plays awesome!! including one beautiful topsin backhand drive return winner...ooh... ANd now I will get the mixed doubles final on tape!!!

Martina is such a great fave to follow... I mean ho'd have thought at 46 she'd give me the opportunity of following her in another slam final?? expereinceing the gut wrenching nerves that borders on nausea...Its just such a bonus seeing her down under again in the year 2003...thank you sooooooo much Martina...

I thought the board ignored Martina when posting a thread about her QF earlier this week.

Now I´m more than happy we´ve a final thread here it´s quite great.

Eleni has a big serve and Todd is as experienced as Leander and Martina. I´ve my doubts that they´ll win. But I can hope, can I. I was quite surprised she once again teamed with Paes instead of taking another quick youngsters like she did with Stark in 1995 at Wimbledon and she did quite good but not successful with Woodbridge and others in other GS last year, so this success is just unbelievable as she definetly had her class even in women´s doubles where just facing the sisters early prevented her from reaching the quarters !

THIS, is the greatest female TENNIS PLAYER ever. Maybe not the greatest singles specialist, maybe not the greatest doubles specialist, but overall, with all respect to Margaret Court (who is #2), this is incredible. Understand, she won her first GS title literally half-a-lifetime ago. (Age 23).

Jan 24th, 2003, 06:02 PM
She IS the greatest doubles player, no doubt about it.
AS far as the greatest *overall* is concerned, she came back to get this major and her 20th Wimbledon just to hear people say so.
I'll stick to greatest = best at one's best = Graf 88
:)

.....and as far as this title is concerned, i've got mixed feelings:
1.I'm happy for Philbo.
(even he doesn't believe me)
2. I think we'll have a hard month of backfire about the greatest ever topic again.....
OK, IRMA, LET'S GET READY!!!
Dont' forget now you'll face Navra winning majors in four decades while Graf was soooooo lucky to win her Grand Slam.
And those "sally gals" Maureen and Monica, uncapable of winning in more than JUST ONE decade!

I agree Chrisgermany, she was playing to a very high standard in the womens doubles...

And I didnt ignore the QF thread the other day!!! :)

Im inviting a few friends over and making a bit of a 'party' out of it...It could possbly be Martina's last grand slam final, so I wanna commemorate it a little!!!

I just cant get over what a fantastic fave I follow...To still be giving me memories at 46 is just such a bonus...

Philbo
Jan 24th, 2003, 10:47 PM
What would you expect Zummi??The fact that Martina has made the finals really GALLS way, as he is one of the biggest naysayers....Waay is just cluthing at something to put a negative spin on it, because he cannot handle the fact that whilest Mrs Graf is pushing strollers and sitting in the stands following her hubby on tour, Martina is still making grand slam finals at 46.....

But for what its worth, Martina IS the greatest ever, and this final has nothing to do with it, she already was with her record as it stood...

Now back to the CELEBRATING!!!!!

Philbo
Jan 24th, 2003, 10:55 PM
joy - If you listen to Martina, who has a history of being honest (sometimes to a fault) with the media, who has said time and time again, that she came back because she was fit enough to play, she was at Wimbledon commentating, and doubles is fun for her... Of course she is still trying to win, but its FUN for the game which makes her play, not a buring desire for another record...

Way is just some insignificant poster in the hills of Italy, who is Graffanatic # 1, who just wants to spew forth psychoanalysis of Martina's reasoning, to put a negative spin on her success because he feels it threatens Graf's claim to # 1..

Really he doesnt know shit and is just speculating like all of us do here, so I think listening to Martina is more reliable than silly old way.....

How do you spell "low"?
Coming in "Blast from the Past" and saying that Maureen Connolly deserved to die?

Changing the title of your website after our first discussion?

Sam L, I have no idea where he pulled that quote from. How could I have ever said that Maureen Connolly deserved to die? Talk about low...

I know I have said that vis a vis Monica, Connolly & Austin were responsible for their own injuries in a way that Monica wasn't. It was their faults they got into the position they did that forced them to end their careers prematurely. How anyone construe that as saying someone deserved to die is beyond me. And Connolly did not pass away until nearly 14 years after she retired. I haven't edited or deleted any of my former posts so I would really like to see the message where I supposedly "said" this.

Changing the title of my website? It has always been "Game, Set & Match, Martina!" right from the time it opened in June of 1999. If he's referring to my describing Martina as "the greatest" instead of "one of the greatest," I wonder what the problem was there? As far as I'm concerned, I can express my own opinion on my own site.

And as for hiding my fanaticism, sure, I'm a fan of Martina's but I don't go on threads dedicated to other tennis players and try to knock them down at a time when their fans are celebrating. Steffi Graf might be returning to play mixed at French Open this year. Her fans are happy. I didn't go to any of her threads and diss her.

And like I said. No one even mentioned Graf's name. We were just happy that Martina made the finals. Anyone can scroll back and see who started knocking who first.

Way:
You did, Zummi, it wasn't in BFTP; it was in another thread in GM.
I've just re-read it in my pc.

And the story of the "one of --- greatest " is a bit sweetened the way you put it.
And you perfectly know it.

And for who-starting-what, Andrew, this is a message board, not a fan site.
Someone put Navra's win (or final) in relation with her overall status.
(which is also offensive to Martina, I mean, in front of the innumerable things she has obtained)
I posted I didn't agree.
Re-read my first post.
I didn't bash anyone.
I said that, in my opinion, reopenig the greatest ever case because of this win is ridicolous.
If one thinks Martina is the greatest (good choice) because of her doubles wins or because of her 30 year career (God's gift, not a merit) belittles her, in my opinion.
And offends (uselessly tries to, that is) those players who couldn't do the same, like Seles or Connolly, not to mention others.
Re-read my first post.

Zummi

Geez if I said it, as you claim, please post it. I really would like to know how I ever said that Maureen Connolly deserved to die. If you're going to make stuff up, at least make it sound plausible...

Anyone can go back to post one and see the messages. They were all congratulating Martina for making the finals. Then someone butts in and starts yapping about who was and who wasn't the greatest and what wars will start next and Connolly & Seles... It was so tacky and out-of-place right after Martina had just made a Grand Slam final and her fans were celebrating.

I think I've said enough. I would like to see this quote of mine though. Very interesting indeed.

You dont know shit is a slang, colloquial term for saying you really dont have any idea way, thats my opinion. Just like its my opinion Nav is best ever, YES way you can have your opinion, (how many times do you have to tell a senile old fool the same thing????)...

So stop tryiong to paint yourself as the 'old wise one', you came in and baited Nav fans with the old argument of best ever...

And I can see you got a bit more worked up than usual?? Is Martina getting under your skin mate??? Is it really pissing you of that she is in the finals?? Im sure it is.... Nevermind mate, Steffi may give you soemthing to cheer for at the French:)

Now please show this quote where Zummi said Connolley deserved to die??? Or stop speaking out your ass.

Zummi

But remember, Phil, he is not a Graf fan ;)

It's so funny the whole thing about me saying Connolly deserved to die. First he says, it's in the Blast from the Past folder and tells me not to delete it. Then he says it's on his PC. For someone who makes use of quoting everyone all the time as a reference point in a message, it was strange he didn't post this alleged quote right away. For all I know, he might just make something up and claim I said it. No-win either way.

And anyway, Maureen Connolly died of leukemia in 1969, aged just 33, leaving behind 2 young girls. To accuse me of saying she deserved it, that's so far-fetched, it's almost laughable. I would never have said something like that and what's more, everyone else would have raked me over the coals had I done so.

I'm sorry this thread has degenerated into this. I'm sure GoMonica did not have this in mind when he started it. My apologies.

No, i'm not.
You're right.
I'm one of those who think she's the greatest ever, period.
But first I don't think she IS the greatest ever, i THINK she is, it's different.
And I'll always jump up to those who want to belittle ANY PAST GREAT FEATS to say that their opinion is the only one.
I recently *defended*, so as to say, Navratilova in the upteenth alltime debate with Nuriboy who said Serena is stornger than her.

But i'm no fan, no.
I've never asked for an autograph and never will.
I have no idols and never will.
I don't care for off court facts and never will
I don't read tennis autobiographies and never will.
The fact that I think Graf is....is not related to what she is to me.
Nothing, that is.
And I agree with you she's a groupie.

And the only person I believe in is Jesus Christ.

OK guys... we all need a bit of calm here. Basically this thread is to celebrate Martina's extraordinary achievement here in Aus in 2003 in reaching the Mixed Doubles Final. And I truly hope she can win this title... it's going to be an exciting match.

As for the arguments of who is the greatest ever, all that is ever going to do is stir up a hell of lot of passion as there are so many fans with their different opinions. Let us just say that Navratilova belongs in the very elite group of the greatest of the greats. There is no doubt about her legendary status in tennis history. But we should never forget (nor belittle) the achievements of the other legends... Lenglen, Wills, Connolly, Court, Graf...

Go Martina !!!
