There aren't too many ajectives with 'J'. ;)

Jana has had a bad year 2002, hardly winning matches. :(

There have been question whether she might consider retirement in the near future. But that doesn't seem to be the case yet. :)

Unfortunately, Jana's start in the new season hasn't been much better: 2 tough 3-set-losses in Sydney- and AO-qualifying. :(

Go Jana ! Good luck, it can just get better ! :)

I thought she had already sort of semi-retired this year because of her veterinarian studies in Berlin and only plans to play in the Bundesliga consistently, with the odd WTA tournament/Challenger interposed.

This will result in such a significant rankings drop that she might as well fully retire. If she's not committed I doubt she can win more than a couple of matches during the season, even at a lower level.

I was wondering what had happened with her. I still remember how shocked people were at RG when she defeated Mauresmo in the first round ;)

JANAs career was always that curious. she had a few very surprising, sometimes sensational results, great wins over BRENDA SCHULTZ-MCCARTHY, HELENA SUKOVA, AMANDA COETZER, SILVIA FARINA, CONCHITA MARTINEZ, ELENA LIKHOVTSEVA, MAGDALENA MALEEVA, AMÉLIE MAURESMO, AMY FRAZIER... and so many disappointing results. always ups and downs! i always liked to follow her career, but i think this is her last down... hopefully not...

Jana was a no-show in India (unless she is playing the $10K in Chennai next week!). I wonder if we have seen the last of her - outside Bundesliga tennis.

GO JANA!

LOL, I suppose she just needed the first set to remember how to hold the racket. Good to see that she hasn't completely lost it.

Just a shame that she has to face Srebotnik.

Why always so negative, Mathias? At least she's playing in a WTA tournament - not ITF.

This is only Jana's third match of the year. So any win is good!

Ziemlich verschluderte Talente.

Jana lost 2-6 7-6 6-7.

Good fight, but she needed that win badly. :(

What a pity! :(

Such a close match lost. A win against the Number two seed would have been so good for Jana.

I hope that the closeness of the match will have helped her, and that she can build on this.

Jana lost 2 and 1 against Abramovic. Bad, bad, bad ... What she's doing on clay anyways ???

Iconoclast
Feb 24th, 2003, 11:04 PM
That's truly appalling. But Abramovic plays a lot better than her current ranking, she showed that last week in Bogota.

With her dismal ranking, Jana is pretty much forced to play this type of tournament. Clay or not. And, hey, please remember the match against Mauresmo before proclaiming her a hopeless clay-courter. ;)

Actually clay is Jana's favourite surface!

I think she was raised on it in the GDR.

It probably doesn't suit her game, but she is familiar with it.

I only wish she could hold some sort of form for more than two matches at a stretch. She's been taking a set before she gets warmed up recently, looks like she took two sets today.

I know that she was probably raised on clay (who wasn't in Germany), and I know that she beat Mauresmo on it. BUT she beat her with attacking the net and volleying.
Maybe she calls it her favourite surface. But her last year's clay results were bad. Just remember how she wasted a huge chance at Roland Garros against a terribly playing Tamarine Tanasugarn.
Maybe she should have considered to play the US challengers instead. Although she could have easily played Scottsdale qualifying as well.

Jana only seems to be part-timing so far this year. She had a close match against Srebotnik in Bogota, losing the tie-break 3rd set, but little else so far.

It would be good to see her back for the European clay courts.
