OMG Indoor hard

Well it's good, last time Silvia and Asa played it was on indoor hard and Asa won.

5000 people  they must win this tie :fiery:

VAMOS SWEDEN!!!

Hi Lindsayfan, how you dare  :fiery: If Italy and USA win (as expected) they will meet in Italian clay the week after Palermo tournament so expect to see Silvia, Rita & Francesca there for clay practice after Wimbledon (and maybe an american?) plus maybe they will keep the Palermo tourny facilities some more days and bring the tie to Sicily   :bounce:

Alek, what did you expect in Sweden against the Italians  outdoor clay? :p (BTW, it will be soooo hard then for Asa to retain her Bol tournament switching to clay the day after)
And you must be joking if you think it's going to be a sold out event ;) having 500 people watching it will be a great success

Alek
Jan 12th, 2003, 04:35 PM
Of course I expected clay. Sofia is not the fittest player, yes Silvia and Rita are veeeeery good on clay, but Asa is also great there and I'm sure she would be able to win one of those matches. And I know Sofia in Sweden in clay would also surprise someone as she did with Patty last year (62 62).

I'm not worried about Schiavone, Asa beat her twice, and one hardcourt-indoor and Asa was playing her second match after a 6-7 7-5 7-6. So I expect more from this tie than last year.

Don't worry for Asa I'm sure she wont defend her title, her nerves will be very high just like in Kuala Lumpur and will crash out in r2 or qf.

And pfff @ the 500 people ;) I'm sure that if they are doing it there is for something and not for having a ridicolous stadium with 3 people watching :p

And if they lose I hope Asa loses her matches 7-6 6-7 15-13 and 4-6 6-4 10-8 having mp's in both matches, that way she would win Bol again ;)!

Alek, it's just not possible to play in Sweden on outdoor clay in April. Plus building a clay court indoor only for this first round tie it will be way too expensive.

BTW, I remember a semifinal Davis Cup tie between Spain and Sweden in Stockholm a few years back and I doubt if there were more than 1000 people watching it live. Guess a women's first round tie against Italy in a small city

Lindsayfan
Jan 12th, 2003, 04:58 PM
spiceboy,if Italy wins they will play USA in USA cos last time in 1999 they played in Italy in Ancona on red clay and Usa won 4-1.
btw i like Swedish girls more than italians, but if Italy wins maybe I could see Italy playing against Lindsay so..let me think...i'll be glad whatever wins!

spiceboy
Jan 12th, 2003, 05:08 PM
:o :o :o I believed Italy played against USA after that tie when Silvia surprised Monica in 3 sets, but yes I think now that was in Italy...btw, wasn't that tie when USA showed up with ONLY 3 players? (Monica & Williamsx2)

Lindsayfan
Jan 12th, 2003, 07:59 PM
Williams wont play Fed Cup,they dont play it since 1999.so Monica & Lindsay will play, like they did in 2000,2001 and 2002.

Lindsayfan, you forgot that next year is an Olympic year so expect them to show up at any stage ;)

Alek
Jan 12th, 2003, 09:50 PM
That was ages ago Spiceboy ;)

This year will be full

I'm sure there are indoor clay courts in Sverige. If not Swede girls would be good in other surfaces but clay.

Anyways. Sweden will take revenge and take the shit out of Italy as a revenge.

HEJA SVERIGE!!

Alek, of course there are indoor claycourts in Sweden but they have no capacity for an international event

Lindsayfan
Jan 14th, 2003, 09:48 PM
they could do as romania is doing for Davis Cup first round against France:as Romania has no money to do a claycourt indoor (a big one,i mean),they did a deal with french federation.
France wil choise the surface (and they chose carpet) but they have to build the court and leave it at romanian federation after matches! :)

PS: spiceboy,r u still in palermo?how is going there?

Hi Lindsayfan :wavey:

spiceboy
Jan 16th, 2003, 03:48 PM
Yes, Palermo is ok, I'll be attending the WTA tournament too from the first day of qualifying till the final day. -Just hoping to get another pass from a player as I did with the men's tourny in September-

I actually log in at the office. I have no pc at home :-(

Lindsayfan
Jan 16th, 2003, 10:16 PM
wow how u got a pass there?how come we didnt meet each other?i was there 3 days! :( do u speak a good italian now?

btw women's tourney is much cheaper than men's and no one really goes there to watch it.

spiceboy
Jan 17th, 2003, 10:12 AM
I just asked for a pass to Fernando Vicente and he was very nice to me. I think he was a bit surprised to find a boy from Barcelona in Sicily and we were talking a bit. Hopefully a Spanish girl will come to Palermo as I think she wouldn't mind to give me a pass as is free for her...The pass was just great as you could go everywhere with (even players restaurants & locker rooms he he...)

And yeah, no problem with Italian. I studied it back in Spain plus is quite similar to Spanish but the thing is that everybody keeps telling me that I have such a Palermitan accent and I sound like
really rural LOL

Lindsayfan
Jan 17th, 2003, 10:36 PM

Silvia and Rita are injured ? I did not that, I know Rita had a small problem in Casablanca, but I thought it was solved by now...and Silvia..... what's the problem with her ???
Francesca  why she does not want to play ?
Anyway, I think it is a great chance for the young italians to confirm their last good results. I believe Flavia & Antonella will play singles and Roby & Flavia (WOW!!) doubles. They should win against Sweden, especially if Asa is not playng and Sofia just came back from injury.
Good luck Italy !!! :bounce:

But I think they should use Maria in doubles. But won't make any difference on scores ;) Lol

Hanna is cool, in fact she is quite funny in her comments, and she is seldom mean.
If she is a balett dancer on court, her raquett dances well too :)

Sweden are Underdogs on Home Soil
Without the only Swedish class player, Åsa Svensson, Sweden Fed Cup Captain Joakim Nyström will try to do a magic trick with his inexperienced team this weekend in Linköping.

Nyström, a former top 10 professional and a regular Davis Cup player for his country with three finals under his belt, will try to use and share all his experience to the four players, none of whom have ever been ranked inside top 100 on the WTA rankings.

Svensson, who has been on the tour for almost ten years, is unable to play due to problems with her Achilles. She will be in the stands of Stångebro Ice Palace in Linköping to watch her compatriots try to beat their experienced opponents and perhaps offer some good advice to her teammates. Sofia Arvidsson and Hanna Nooni are set to take care of both the singles and doubles.

“These two players have showed me at practice this week that they are very keen to play, “ said Nyström.

Arvidsson has her best tennis memories from Fed Cup. Last year she beat Switzerland's Patty Schnyder to help Sweden stay in the World Group. In the absence of Svensson she is ready to take over the responsibility of beeing the number one player. “It´s a little bit different without Åsa, but we are a team and every player takes responsibility, “ she said at the press conference after the draw at the Hilton Hotel.

Arvidsson, with a WTA ranking of No. 128, will play the first match on Saturday against Antonella Serra Zanetti, ranked almost 50 places higher.

“If my players can hang on in every set, the pressure is all on the Italians,” said an optimistic Nyström.

Sweden’s number two, Hanna Nooni, actually played her first ever tennis match in Linköping when she was only 10 years old. “It's amazing to be back here for the most important match in my life. This is gonna be really fun,” she said when Swedish press asked her about the host city.

Italy's captain, also a former pro and Davis Cup player, Corrado Barazzutti, sees his three best players out of the competition due to injuries. He still has two top 100 players, both of whom were selected for singles duty: Flavia Pennetta and Antonella Serra Zanetti.

“I met Sofia in January. She is very good but of Hanna we know nothing,” Pennetta explained after the draw.

Barazzutti is keen to assure that rankings don´t mean anything in team competitions. “Every match has to be played, but my players are ready. Even without the injured players I still have a good team,” he explained.

Serra Zanetti doesn´t think the change from outdoors to indoors will be decisive. “I have already played a couple of tournaments on clay but it's not really a problem.“

Last year the teams met in the first round in Italy on clay and the host country clinched a 5-0 win en route to the semifinals. After beating Belgium in the quarters they finally lost against the Slovak Republic. Sweden was forced to play a regulation match against Switzerland to stay in the World Group. A dramatic weekend in Malmö saw Sweden win the decisive double in three sets.

The winner of the tie in Linköping will is set to face the USA away in the quarterfinals on 19-20 July.
