Wildcard hopes that stars will sneak into Sydney

One wildcard spot remains in the women's draw at the adidas International in Sydney next week, as the organisers hold out for a last-minute request from a big name.

But the chances of snaring one of the biggest names on the women's tour have receded, with both the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, ruling out an appearance at the event - news that will bring hope to the top 30 players who have missed the cut for the main draw.

A spokesman said tournament director Craig Watson has until the official tournament draw on Saturday to announce the wildcard. "There are a couple of choices with Australian girls and we're also hanging on for some of the big-name players," the spokesman said.

With WTA tournament play this week at the Gold Coast and in Auckland, and an exhibition event under way in Hong Kong, there is still a chance that some highly ranked players may ask for a wildcard into the Sydney event for match practice ahead of the Australian Open.

The waiting game means an anxious few days for wildcard hopefuls Elena Bovina of Russia and Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, both inside the top 30 but outside the tournament ranking cut-off of 25.

Meanwhile, the Sydney International Tennis Centre is set to become a hive of activity with the start tomorrow of the women's qualifying tournament, and the arrival from overseas of main draw players eager to schedule practice sessions on the Rebound Ace courts.
Admission to tomorrow's session, and the start of men's qualifying action on Saturday, is free, and if recent history is any guide, players who come through the qualifying rounds will make their presence felt in the main draw.

In 1998, Serena Williams made it to the semi-finals after having to qualify for the tournament and last year, Alexandra Stevenson fought her way through to upend No1 seed Jennifer Capriati in the second round. Juan Ignacio Chela became the first qualifier to make it through to the men's final.

The $1.6 million tournament begins on Sunday.

I hope Conchi is playing!

Yes Tammy got the WC....Monica Seles wanted to play but missed the 4pm deadline on Thursday to accept....she thought she had an extra day (accroding to the newspaper article I read). So Tammy got it instead.
