I'm still surprised Kim lost though. She seemed unbeatable at the Fed Cup, she was on a roll. Of course, Franceska is not be underestimated, but I'd never expected her to beat Kim here.

Belgium got their Hopman Cup challenge off the ground with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Italy in Perth.
Kim Clijsters and Xavier Malisse were heavily favoured to beat the Italian pairing of Davide Sanguinetti and Francesca Schiavone.

But a superb 6-4 6-4 win for Schiavone over world number five Clijsters in the opening rubber had Belgium on the verge of a shock defeat.

Malisse then hauled Belgium back into the match with a 6-4 7-5 win over Sanguinetti, before teaming up with Clijsters to take the doubles 6-3 6-4.

Schiavone, ranked 31st in the world, needed eight match points before claiming what she described as "the best win of my career" againsat Clijsters.

Schiavone scored a surprise win over Clijsters

The Belgian, who left the Hopman Cup New Year's Eve Ball early on Monday, admitted that it was difficult to play on the first morning of the New Year.

"I've played her before and she just chases everything down," said Clijsters. "I knew it would be tough.

"And 10 o'clock in the morning is early to be running around on New Year's Day."

Malisse had a more straightforward time against Sanguinetti and gave a solid performance.

"I felt a little extra pressure on myself in the singles after Kim had lost," said Malisse.

"You know, first match of the year, it is always tough, but physically I felt good."

The Belgians were much the better pairing in the doubles clash and Clijsters recovered from her earlier disappointment to wrap up victory with a drop volley.

"It was important to win that," said Clijsters. "It was good to get that win after losing this morning."

Third seeds Spain took a 1-0 lead against defending champions Switzerland as Arantxa Sanchez Vicario thrashed teenager Miroslava Vavrinec 6-2 6-0.

The 30-year-old bludgeoned 119th-ranked Vavrinec throughout the 50-minute match in which the Swiss player failed to hold serve once.

"I just tried to play my own game. I attacked the ball when I had to and served pretty well too," said Sanchez Vicario.

World number 12 Roger Federer must beat Tommy Robredo in the second singles to keep Switzerland alive in the tournament after suffering a 0-3 reverse against Australia in their opening tie.
