READY TO ASSERT HERSELF AS AT THE TOP
Henin-Hardenne blazes back with Charleston win
Belgians, Monte Carlo Winner Nadal Early French favorites

By Ron Cioffi, ********************

FROM THE FAMILY CIRCLE CUP IN CHARLESTON – It's like 2003 all over again.

Following her countrywomen's Kim Clijsters two recent wins in Tier I tournaments, Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne continued a replay of 2003 when Belgium ruled the tennis world. She defeated Elena Dementieva 7-5, 6-4 to win her second Family Circle Cup.

Using the fine-tuned mental game that netted her two Grand Slam titles in 2003 and the first of 2004, Henin-Hardenne was strong and decisive when the match was on the line.

The unseeded, No. 43 Henin-Hardenne proved the illnesses and injuries of 2004 have faded from her focus. Also the champion here in 2003 – her only other appearance – Henin-Hardenne proved her game is largely back. She marched toward victory with a balanced and controlled attack, winning 24 of 32 net approaches and banging four aces.

Exploiting Dementieva's sloppy play at 5-5 in the first set, Henin-Hardenne chipped away as the Russian backed offher strokes. Then, at 6-5, Henin-Hardenne blasted two forehand winners and attacked the net to put away a classic backhand volley.

As the pressure mounted in the second set, Henin-Hardenne feasted on back-to-back second serves, slamming return winners and bringing the ninth game to deuce. Justine earned her first break point of the game with a pressing backhand that bounced off Dementieva's racket.

"I feel like I was born for that," Henin-Hardenne said about winning finals. "This one is very special because it's after such a long, hard time. So, it's been very emotional for me today because I come from something really bad, very bad experience last year.I never thought about winning this tournament when I arrived here. … I had a pretty tough draw and especially when you're unseeded. Henin defeated No. 1 Lindsay Davenport and Tatiana Golovin before facing Dementieva.

The sudden return of the Belgians -- who have won the last three Tier tournaments -- could sway the predictions for Roland Garros and the upcoming clay court tournaments. Henin took down Clijsters for the 2003 title. Clijtsers was unable to compete last year, while a sickly Henin was stunned in the second round by Tatiana Garbin. No friend of Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne went out on a strange limb and defended herself and her former fed Cup teammate. "We were almost born in the same place. We almost have the same age, a lot of things in common. We are back, both of us. That's very good for tennis. But, I just want to say some people just said that when we were out of the tour, that we were finished, we were burned, we were over. And I think that we proved in the last few weeks that is not true at all."

The return of Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters make for a unusual and crowded situation on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour: a bevy of players who have a good chance of winning the French, including Serena Williams, Anastasia Myskina, Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo, Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Never has the women's game been so competitive.

DEMENTIEVA CAN'T MEET CHALLENGE
While Dementieva is in that group of contenders, she has work to do to get her first Slam. Dementieva hasn't won a crown in 17 months and will have to raise her game to get out of her bridesmaid mode. In that time she lost two Grand Slam finals – '04 Roland Garros and US Open – and reached this final and the semis in this year's Indian Wells and Sydney. She continues to touch the edge of the big-time, but always comes up short.

While critics focus on her soft second-serve, it was her lack of aggression that doomed her late in the first set. "I missed opportunities in the first set and I didn't take many risks," Dementieva said about the crucial game of the first set. "I wasn't that aggressive on the score of 5-3 for me. I mean, who you're doing the right thing you've just got to continue to do it. … I was playing too much rallies, waiting for maybe mistake from her and that was the wrong idea."

Dementieva said Henin-Hardenne was "playing unbelievable today. … We both played at a very high level." Dementieva explained this tournament is giving her confidence to repeat her run to the '04 French Open finals. "I just hope I'm in the same situation. I know I won't be so nervous." She said she prefers the green clay played in the US over the slower red clay that awaits her in the European spring season.

Victorious Nadal Early French Favorite

It’s always a dicey proposition to tab an early favorite for Roland Garros, but Spanish teen Rafael Nadal certainly proved himself to be one of the top contenders by winning TMS Monte Carlo with a 6-3, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 victory over Guillermo Coria on Sunday.

The lefty played a consistent and authoritative match, out-slugging the crafty and quick Argentine, who couldn’t find an answer for the Spaniard's huge forehand. But Nadal, who also won Brazil and Acapulco on clay in February, brushed aside the thought that he’s the young man to beat in Paris.

"No, no, no," he said. " I am not favorite. It’s my first Roland Garros. I only think about the next tournaments: Barcelona , Rome. I am playing good now, but I don't know when the French Open happens if I’m I gonna play good or I gonna play bad. But if I play the same like this, I can win."
In drizzly and heavy conditions, Nadal controlled the first two sets with his huge topspin and speed, the Coria managed to wind his way back into the match in the third set, when Nadal appeared to grow tired and Coria found the angles, successfully employing his soft drop shot. Nadal thought back to Miami, where he held a two set lead against Roger Federer and let it slip away.

"I played very well the first two sets," Nadal said. "In the third set, he was up three-love, and I can't fight every set because my physique is not for five sets. And I stop. I came back in the fourth set very well and after Miami , I'm a little bit scared because it’s the same situation. But finally I won."
Nadal became the youngest winner in Monte Carlo since Mats Wilander in 1983 (18 years, 7 months) and jumped to second place in the INDESIT ATP Race, behind Federer. While the Race certainly doesn’t indicate who has been the top players over the past year, it certainly says who has been the best since January 1. Without a doubt, Nadal has been the top man on clay and played well enough on hard courts to give himself the overall No. 2 spot.

With his serve still a work in progress and his net game still developing, Nadal has a huge upside. The game’s veteran stars are sure to be wary in the coming months.

"My objective is improve my tennis," he said. "I need improve some shots, and this is my objective. I need improve my serve, my volley, and my slice. And if I improve those shots, I think I can won lot of matches."

Can't believe both girls are about the same size.

and both giving genuine smiles ....... it seems they like each other as people!!

Have you noticed when players have to smile with a trophy, because they don't like their opponent their smiles are not genuine?

I do know some players are like that. And at times you ended up with a funny caption because of that. :tape: Justine always very genuine this why I like her as a person as well as a player. Anyway I'm happy that Justine won in the end. And I do hope she will doing vey well too at the AO. She has a tough draw for her and this will help her (mentally) for that.

LMAO of Nemesis....everytime I see that Dubai trophy it always makes me think of tea as well LOL! Anyways I miss that Berlin Bear though....hope they bring it back this year. Isn't this also the tornament that has like 3-4 trophies that the winner hoists? I remember Justine holding up that Bear, a Crystal, a Silver plate, and a big Mastercard check when she won this several years ago. LOL...oh Berlin :-)

Ok If Justine wins a 4th one, it should be her choice where she gets to have the pics taken...maybe that Sacre church or that Triomphe (sp?) for a background.

C'mon RG get it together! ;-)

why two tophies? what is that metal cup for?

komorli
Nov 12th, 2006, 08:19 PM
the metal one is called "The Billie Jean King Trophy" or something like that. I don't know what its significance is though.

and the glass one is a new vase for those flowers she got yesterday! :p j/k

Hingiswinsthis
Nov 12th, 2006, 09:13 PM
that trophy is pretty significant! It was first made in 1998 when Hingis won, and the winner since gets to hoist that trophy. I like the antique look of it, like it's back from the 70's....
