If I understand what the article says, Marion is still standing firm about her dad? So wouldn't that mean they're considering agreeing to bring him in too? Or am I getting things wrong?

I hope it's true, anyway. I thought Mauresmo said there was no chance.

Journalist who wrote the news is really serious. I'm sure that he has good sources. He said that an agreement has been found. But of course, he can't say more. Amelie has still 7 days before to send her list to ITF.

Could you give us a run down of the article? So Walter won't be present at Fed cup? These articles are about process which leads to a gentlewomen agreement. With a big focus on dad's role. Nobody saw him in Paris as Marion has trained with Momo and Charles Antoine Brezac.

So, nobody knows what's going to happen from next thursday. Momo said she has only discussed with Marion since Melbourne. The fact is that nobody expected this decision except Momo who have always got the feeling.

Her dad won't be in Limoges to help Marion prepare for her matches. But he will be allowed to attend, but only as a family member fom thursday evening. Momo said that she doesn't know if he will come. Marion is the only one to know. But she told nothing.

It's about time she broke from her dad a little.Your feeling is shared by so many people in France and in the world. But all the results she had were with dad. Her dad is everything for her. She even sent him a kiss at the TV after her win over Xtina.

Bartoli's Boy
Feb 1st, 2013, 06:15 PM
Damn, she just lost the first set tiebreak to Barthel, after having I think 4 set points. It was strange because after dumping a return into the net on the first set point, you could tell she was very nervous from her facial expression. Like "I needed to hit a winner and win the set there." it's strange to not feel confident when you have 3 more set points, 2 of them on your serve. Then she served 2 double faults  , and Barthel played a good point to save the next one.

Bartoli's Boy

6-7, 4-6

Seemed like a comeback was on the cards when Marion saved 3 match points in the final game, but Barthel served it out. I mean it wasn't exactly easy just to reach the tiebreak in the 1st, but you have to think she should have won it with at least those 2 set points on serve. It seemed like she had too much respect for Barthel when she served those two doubles. I know she lost to her before, but it was only the one loss. Oh well.

Feared this might happen but consecutive double faults on set points  X 100

She couldn't return first or second serves today. Of course standing so far inside the baseline to return such a big serve on a indoor court doesn't exactly help.

She looked like she might be able to fight it out in the last game, but missed a complete sitter at deuce and an ace ensured the victory for Barthel, and now with Kvitova losing, the title was pretty much there for the taking

She's been training so hard but we've seen it on court yet. So disappointing; we can only hope the Fed Cup atmosphere will bring out her best next week as she didn't exactly have a lot to work with today.

I've always supported Marion's right to choose her coach, when people have criticised her for continuing to be coached by her father. Some people think all tennis dads are controlling monsters, or all players coached by their parents are immature, etc. But everyone is different, and I think the player herself knows what works best, more than we the fans.

But since this is her decision, it's exciting news. Maybe she knew that she'd reached her potential with her father, and wondered "can I do better with the right coach?" You can't know the answer until maybe a year later, so it's a big risk late in her career. It shows she wants success at a major very badly. :)

Lionel Chami, the journalist gave 2 main reasons :
- feeling of routine with her dad
- no improvement in her game (feeling of stagnation)

She explained that physical preparation she followed during winter was the toughest of whole career. And she was probably disappointed enough after her defeat vs Makarova to go toward Momo.

Funny things in l'equipe printed edition. Marion's new situation is more important than fed cup defeat.

I know that Christine Thomas is always very well informed about Marion. But imo, many things are not very clear :
- As she knows dad, she apparently got in touch with him. And he asked for time. Some people guess he's still a bit chocked.
- She has a secret source who's speaking a lot. And this source explains that Marion is going too fast, even for FFT. And she asks for too many things at the same time. That's why fft asked Perrote in emergency to go in Doha With Marion.
- Xavier Moreau who will be new physical trainer has organized physical tests. And his conclusions are that he understands now why she's a top 10 player.

Thanks Lighter. That's really interesting. Maybe the FFT will adopt Walter's training methods? :p That would be hilarious.

But I hope that she can continue her normal training methods without her father, and the new team will suggest things to improve what she already does well. Like adding a new tennis brain, to give her different strategies for beating players she always struggles with. I worry that somebody new would just say "stop all that nonsense you learnt with your dad, and learn everything again, from the textbook." Which could ruin her game completely.

So I'm relieved to read what Xavier Moreau said.

Disappointing that Kuznetsova beat her after she lead in the first set, but I expected her to lose to Schiavone.

Interesting interview with her... she seems to be saying she's not sure she needs a coach. I hope that's just hyperbole. Surely the advantage of changing the team is to have new people, with new ideas of how to play on the court? Not more physical training? Although you can never be too fit.

I'm a bit confused. It sounds more like she just doesn't want her dad always there watching, which is understandable. But being your own person doesn't mean never listening to other people's advice again.

""Usually girls have a first serve and a second serve, but Marion doesn't have a second serve, she has two first serves. Both serves are at least 150 or 160Ks. So you just need to be on your toes. She steps in, she's in the court on your serves, as well - you feel the pressure. But you just need to be ready and know it's going to be coming fast at you."

Pova said the same in NYC.

I guess she wants to be like her idol Sampras. :p Obviously he's not a bad person to emulate, but it helps when you're confident and winning matches. I wish that when she has game point, on a second serve, she would just put the ball in play. Win some important matches, feel confident, then she can go for broke on those serves with more belief that it's going to work.

In Paris against Barthel, you could tell before some second serves that she didn't believe it would go in. Surely that is the time to play safer. I really think she would have won this match today, with just some of those serves being good.

And the Barthel match too, and maybe even her Australian Open 3rd round match (remember she got that back on serve, only to serve two double faults in the last game).

It's so frustrating how much of a liability her second serve is; this is the worst it's ever been, and she really needed this win to finally get 2013 off to a start :sigh:

Marion is coming back today in Switzerland. Before to fly away to Monterrey. She's on entry list.

She will travel with Xavier Moreau as fitness coach. And will be coached in IW and Miami by Momo : https://twitter.com/MattBarbarin/status/304658950811443200.
But she's decided to find a new coach as explained HERE (https://twitter.com/MattBarbarin/status/304659758772781057) : "Then Indeed 2 find someone else, cause a year isn't only made by a GS, IW&Miami. It's a lot of tournaments & I need someone every week".

In l'équipe, she explains that she's happy with the way she played, especially during 3rd set except serve.

Caroline about Marion : "I work very hard, but Marion practices 3 hours before her matches. You can't be fitter than that."

At the age of 28 and with her with solitary appearance in a Grand Slam final now almost six years distant, Marion Bartoli has announced a major makeover for her career in a last bid for glory.

As reported last month, the Frenchwoman who currently stands at no.11 on the WTA world rankings but has previously gone as high as no.7, has ended a career-long coaching relationship with her father Walter and now plans to work with former Australian Open and Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo.

However Bartoli has also finally decided to integrate into the French Federation de Tennis system and is determined to get in the best shape of her life. She has appointed a new physical trainer in Xavier Moreau who worked with Mauresmo during her best years.

“When you look at the players right now, if you’re not physically extremely strong, how you can be able to beat them?” asked Bartoli. “It’s impossible. You have to be so fit to be able to run for three hours. Then the next day be on the court and do it again and again and again.

“So if you want to be inside of the top ten, if you want to have the trophies and achieve something, the first thing is to get really fit. For some players it’s easier because they are naturally physically stronger than me because they have their parents who have been champions or whatever. I don’t have that; I know it. It has been always my weakness.”

After losing to Caroline Wozniacki in the Dubai Duty Free Championships, Bartoli will return home to Geneva in Switzerland, which is also the base of Mauresmo and Moreau

“Amelie’s going to be probably my main coach,” she confirmed. “For some tournaments; the big ones, at least. Then of course I need to find someone else, because a year is not only made by the Grand Slam tournaments along with Indian Wells and Miami. It’s a lot of tournaments every week, and I need someone with me all the time.

“But for now the most important thing for me is to improve physically. I feel on the tennis court I know what I have to do, and I know myself extremely well. So it’s not like I really need someone at 28 years old taking me by the hand and telling me what to do. I know how to hit forehands and backhands.

“Xavier was the physical trainer of Amelie, and he took her to no. 1 in the world and to Grand Slams. I can see already the improvement just by working a little bit every day just before the matches.”

But Bartoli was at pains to stress her new regime has the complete backing of her father who previously was at odds with the French system. She still telephones her father every day but no longer will he be the dominant force in her tennis career.

“It’s been a long process,” she said. “I have been talking a lot with my dad about it, of course. I love him too much to really just say: ‘That’s it. It’s over.’

“As an athlete, you have to think about your career when you’re 28 years old and you’re kind of towards the end of your career. Either you just let it slip away, finish the way it is and you’re happy with what you have already done. Or you want more, and I’m the kind of person that always wants more.

“So I felt it was the time to do it, and my dad encouraged me to do so. So it’s not like it’s a split and we are in fight or whatever. We are really on the same page.”
