I was talking with a mate from work and he just broke up with his gf and was about to live alone for the first time. He said he wasn't very happy about it coz he's never lived alone before. He asked me for my opinion coz I live alone and have for over 5 years. I told him that while I get lonely at times that I actually feel rather fortunate for having this opportunity to live alone. In many ways it's helped me to be more independent. I told him that what I enjoy most is the ability to do what I want when I want. For example I'm not really that house proud so if on certain days I don't fancy cleaning up I don't. I don't have to coordinate schedules with a bf to make plans for the weekend. I have freedom that I may not fully have were I living with others. I explained to him that there are other issues as well like loneliness but you get accustomed to it after a bit of time.

For those that live alone or have in the past what advice would you give my mate?

In ways, I enjoyed living alone more, than with my fiancee.
Pros:
*You can come and go freely whenever you want, without someone wondering why you just came in the door at 1:30 AM :o
*You don't have to keep that pad as clean :o
*You only have to feed/support/ cook/ clean, etc. for one person.
*You don't have to figure out on splitting the bills up.
Cons:
* No one to talk to at times if you need it.
* No one to be grumpy to in the morning :o
* It gets too quiet at times. I always had to have a cd, or something playing to make some niose.

I honestly think everyone should live by themselves at some point in their lives- just get to enjoy their own company, learn to be independent etc....

I live with someone but i get lots of alone time:) I love it!

That's exactly what I mean joy! :D The 'alone time' so to speak shouldn't be taken for granted coz it's rather necessary I think. It's not egotistical to say that either coz all it really means is that it gives you time to be with yourself and think and stress and relax and have a laugh as well. :)

it's amazing how much you get to know yourself during that time - as in your own character, your strengths and weaknesses... what one can do to better oneself as a person...

Walking around naked and going potty with the bathroom door open! Those are the best!

I loved living alone. I could sing and dance around naked..I could listen to whatever music I wanted, watch whatever movie I wanted and I could crack open a beer at 10:00 am and not get disapproving looks..oh wait..I can still do that now..;)
