View Full Version : Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi! -- Lucie at the 2013 Australian Open

Second Quarter of the Draw: Lucie's Section
Nadia Petrova (RUS) [12] vs. Kimiko Date-Krumm (JPN)
Shahar Peer (ISR) vs. Alexandra Panova (RUS)
Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor (ESP) vs. Bojana Jovanovski (SRB)
Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (CRO) vs. Lucie Safarova (CZE) [17]

So not a horrific draw... I'd be pleased if she made it to the third round and gave Petrova a tough fight honestly. If she could get out of this section (which would be a monumental victory in and of itself), that'd mean she's probably playing good tennis and would have a shot against Stephens, Kvitova, or Robson I think.

Let's go Lucie! Can't be worse than last year! Hope my thread brings some luck.

:yeah: It's actually all things considered a pretty good draw...she knows Lucic's game because she played her last year and beat her 6-2 6-0...I agree with you, making R3 and pushing Petrova would be a successful tournament for her imo. Here's hoping anyway.

Mirjana is extremely dangerous when she's playing well, but that only happens on grass now. :sobbing:

I'm hoping she at least makes the R32 anyway. :D

Like the draw. Hope we get a stream for Lucie vs Mirjana Lucic match :hearts:

A loss before R3 would be a big disappointment. I really hope Lucie remembers 2007 ;)

Lucie serving first in the second set so if she can hold she can pressure Lucic on her serve. Good start holding the first game.

Edinboro
Jan 15th, 2013, 02:37 AM
Honest to God, how hard is it to break Lucic? Even though shes up this is embarrassing the number of missed bps.

sCoTt.ChE.
Jan 15th, 2013, 02:40 AM
Lucie :o Two more BP's to really shift the momentum in her favour and she let's Lucic off the hook.

Lucie follows by of course offering BP's of her own, saves two but get's broken anyway.

Lucie does hold and now up 5-4 with a chance to finish this in straights. A rare good return game would be nice now Lucie...

Yes! Lucie wins on her first MP, 7-6(4) 6-4. That's a really good effort to dig in and turn that second set around.

Robert-KimClijst
Jan 15th, 2013, 05:13 AM
Yahoo! Hopefully Lucie will feel a little less pressure having gotten through the first round and recorded her first victory of the year. Good stuff, got the job done in straights. A very winnable match against Jovanovski next. And not looking ahead in the draw, but Petrova lost so Peer or Date-Krum would be third round. Hopefully Lucie doesn't know that though because I don't think it would do her mindset any good honestly.

Back to my room now...Im very very happy with Lucie today, I'll write a full match report soon and upload my pics, but lots and lots of positives

Davodus
Jan 15th, 2013, 08:02 AM
So let me start by saying Lucic played the best she can play these days...winner after winner, extremely deep flat shots non stop and really contained her errors. Lucie did a fantastic job at maintaining that, she was absorbing pace and constructing the points behind her serve really well. She also didn't return that badly, Lucic was just playing too well on her service games. In the 2nd set she got broken and that was mostly due to her having a bit of a mental lapse, but that was the only one all match. At 0-30 at 4-5 she served great, and hit winners and was really mentally clutch in that moment. Her BH was solid too, hardly made mistakes off it and hit some nice winners, and Lucic was really attacking to the BH. Lucie also was trying to get her FH spinning up to Lucic's BH but her BH was working really well, so Lucie changed and started going for her FH down the line more, and made some nice shots.

It was overall a high quality match, and at 2-4 in the 2nd Lucie started taking control with her FH and really dominate play. Also she won with a return winner  Her serve can be worked on, i would say her 2nd serve was too pushy a lot of the time but she didn't do many DFs. It was a tough match and she figured out how to win which was why I liked it. Hopefully she can put in the same tough performance against Jovanovski. Not even looking to R3 yet.

Pics uploading now and I'll go to the doubles tomorrow. Oh btw she looked great in her new outfit

Oh btw forgot to add...Lucie stepped it up in the TB. She crushed 2 returns to get the 2 mini breaks and really went after her own serves. Lucic did 2 good serves at 1-6, then hit a big winner at 3-6 and screamed come on..and Lucie seemed a little annoyed, then bombed an unreturnable down the middle  Biljana was being very positive and they both were really happy at the end

Thanks so much for getting the match report out so quickly, I was intrigued to see how much of my predictions were right as it's always quite difficult to guess what's going on following the livescores!

I actually had a funny feeling Lucic was playing a lot better than she normally would, the big hitters often seem to find their game against Lucie, maybe I'm biased but it does seem that way!

There seems to be a lot of positives in the mental side of Lucie's match play and that is really encouraging as it's usually a determining factor with Lucie not believing in herself or struggling to think for herself when an opponent is on their game. Sounds like one of Lucie's better played tiebreaks which is also good.

I can't believe Lucie won on a return winner though, that is shocking!

I won't get too carried away as Lucie can follow a well executed match with a terrible one but a better win than it looked on paper and encouraging signs.

Lucie was best player on court by far in the doubles today...she was controlling play from the baseline, she outhit Babos and Robson most of the time. She looked confident...she served pretty well after getting broken early, and she returned well too. She also crossed at the net a few times and hit volley winners

Pavs was also good, they just looked like the better team from the start and it was fun to watch. Lucie looks 10 times more comfortable on court than she did in Brisbane. Also they won on a netcord, pavs went down the line and it hit the net and jumped over the volleyer  but i think it would've been a winner anyway.

Lucie 3rd on showcourt 3 tomorrow...its going to be stinking hot. 39C maximum...so it might get delayed for heat. Im hopeful for a good win given how she looks and is hitting, but who knows really.

Lucie into AO R2 ! :D

Ballbashers like Lucic are very good opponents for Lucie. Jovanovski in R2 is another one. Thanx for the report, Davodus. Seems like Lucie was playing great tennis. Hope she doesn`t turn shit vs Jovanovski. The draw is widen open to R4 now because Petrova - another headcase - lost. Lucie is the best player left in this part of draw. Just hope she won`t stop herself.

This Duckworth/Kavcic match is starting to piss me off especially Kavcic. I dont know who these people are but that Kavcic guy has had numerous match points, numerous breaks of serve and still cant close it off. Its his fault this match has been going on for 4 and a half hours...Gah 8-7 in the 5th and Im getting tired over here waiting.

It might sound strange but I knew this would happen...as soon as I saw Duckworth/Kavcic was going up and down and really long, I knew she would lose...it happens every time she has to play after a mens 5 setter...she isn't ready to go. She relies a lot on her timing and if shes had to get ready stop get ready stop shes never got her timing for the match. And that's what happened, she was just blasting everything long. It was awful. Losing the break then totally flopping, coming back then losing 8 points in a row. Just awful tennis, and Jovanovski did nothing, she just waited for Lucie to miss. Awful. So disappointing given the last 2 days she's looked so good, but imo the schedule screwed her here a bit.

I know she wanted it so bad and she must be so nervous, but hey, she is nearly 26, should be mature enough to stand in a R2 Grand slam match. And she didn't adjust anything when she knew she is so off today, I don't know whys she went for BHDTL every BH shot which has no margin of error... Every time when there is chances or good draw, she must waste it, however, when she plays against top player, she can play well, it is so frustrating to see her doing that especially when here opponent was not playing well either and she got all the good luck today

Robert-KimClijst

SO disappointing. Scheduling really isn't an excuse. Hopefully Lucie rebounds. But such a bummer, this draw was a Godsend. I mean, Date-Krum in the third round? :( Really discouraging. I just hope Lucie can keep her head up and keep plugging away without getting hung up on this missed opportunity.

Davodus
Jan 17th, 2013, 09:32 PM
I'm not using scheduling as an excuse, I just knew when that match lasted forever she would play bad because it mucks with her warmup and then she has no timing. And it was so hot, trust me I was in the sun all day and I almost passed out several times...when it's that hot the balls fly off the racquet particularly because Lucie hits very flat off her BH. But she did just keep blasting them long, and the only time she changed was at 2-5, then when she got back to 5-5 went back to doing the same thing. It's just another wasted opportunity which is way too common that I basically expect it.

The poorly executed match happened then. :o I was really trying to stay awake as Lucie is usually out of slams so early I never get to see her play, but that bloody Kavcic match... time seemed to be standing still the way the scoreboard ticked over; I gave up. Then I had to read the result... erghh.

I like Bojana but Lucie had a golden opportunity for another possible QF here with Petrova and Kvitova out. This quarter is a mess.

This so much. Jovanivski was literally BEGGING Lucie to get back in the match and she just couldn't do it. But this is a really bad loss. She's going to lose her top 20 position here very shortly if she doesnt turn things around. Seeing how shes not doing well I would hope she would enter some smaller events here and get some confidence going.

Edinboro
Jan 18th, 2013, 02:59 AM
I'm still frustrated thinking about it LOL. These are the kinds of matches top 20 players should not lose, period. When you have a draw that opens up like hers did you have have have to take advantage of it. Maybe once I can understand, but this has just been way too much. And personally for me its tough cause Lucie is really the only player that I am a hardcore die hard fan of so a lot of my interest in following the tour is based on her success. When she goes out early in events I find it hard to even get motivated to continue watching. There are definitely other players I am big fans of but nothing matches the feeling I get supporting Lucie.

Into the doubles QF when Jankovic retired at 2-1...sorry for Jankovic, but a slam QF is a good result no matter how you look at it, and its only Barty/Dellacqua or Grandin/Uhlirova in the QF

Well at least my thread brought Luce some luck... Quarterfinals in the doubles is good, especially since it's SUCH an improvement compared to Lucie in doubles a year ago. Maybe this will take the edge off of these slams in the singles by doing well in the doubles?

Not one of Lucie's better doubles matches... They lose to Barty and Dellacqua 62 63. Her returning was not the best.

She and Pavs both played awful. Flat, nothing tennis. I think not having a match since Friday didn't help tbh but just terrible...so many errors. And Barty/Dellacqua had a looooottt of luck

http://isport.blesk.cz/clanek/tenis-australian-open/136533/byla-jsem-jak-zpomalena-litovala-safarova-neslo-se-hybat-neslo-premyslet.html interesting read...Lucie said she was too slow, everything was physically shut down from the heat and she couldnt handle it. That's not really a good thing, but she's pretty candid.

Saw first three games today and it was so clear they are gonna lose

Both Barty and Dellacqua have much better doubles skills than Lucie and Pavs, plus crowd was behind them. :tears:

But this is the first time in ages she wasnt eliminated in first week of the Slam :help:

Hopefully RG will be more successful. :yeah:
