also without STEFFI and ANKE the german girls had a few nice results here in the last years. JANA played 4th round in 2000, MARLENE this year. GRETA played a threesetter against LINDSAY in the second round of the 2001 AUSOPEN....
let's hope for another nice result in 2003!
good luck, german girls! :bounce:

Yes, the past 3 years a German 'underdog' has reached the 4th round - Jana, Barbara and Marlene. :)

I would love to see Anca in the 4th round this time. :bounce: (but 3rd round would be fine as well ;))

yes, Anca is the german player with the best chance to win more then 1 match

All my hopes lie on Anca and Angie !

Even if Marlene played well at Canberra she was just lucky to reach the maindraw (LL: failed twice facing no-name Marion Bartoli). So I'm not sure if she can get into r2 or r3. Let's hope so.

Jana is just out of place for more than a half of year.

Hi gang,

My oh my- it's been quite a while since we had a slam.
How is everyone anyway?

I digress. I'm really jazzed up with the "live" coverage
next Monday. Let's hope for some really great matches
this year. Hate to see a former great tennis nation just
suddenly stop being in the spot light. I suppose it all goes
in cycles. I think it's just a matter of time.

Cheers,

Kloesel lost too.

Main draw:

Müller vs. Ant. Serra Zanetti
Roesch vs. Panova
Rittner vs. Dominikovic
Weingärtner vs. Capriati :o
Arn vs. Petrova
Barna vs. Schiavone

Martina and Barbara *should* win. Will they ?
Anca, Greta and Angelika have very tough matches. Rather unlikely that that they win, I'm afraid. But good luck ! :)
Marlene ... if she wins she can avoid dropping in the rankings. Otherwise it's bye, bye. :wavey:

Anca lost in 2.

Marlene lost in 3.

But, as Iconoclast put it, Anca was 753 % better than Marlene today. ;)

I only saw the 2nd set of Anca's match, and she played very, very well.
She held serve for 1-0, then had 5 break-points but Venus saved them all, one with a very lucky frame-shot.
But Anca then broke for 3-1 and held for 4-1.
Then Venus was 0-40 on her serve, but after that she won 14 of the next 15 points. There was nothing Anca could do.
Anca saved 3 more BP's at 4-4 and fought until the end, but Venus was too good.
Although the 2nd set lasted 49 minutes, Anca only had 5 unforced errors.
I'm really optimistic now that she will make the top 50. :)

Marlene  The first set was just horrible. (OK, the whole match was.) In the 2nd she led 3-0, then lost the next 4 games but somehow luckily won the set.
In the 3rd she was down 0-4 fast, then came back when Virginia was choking. She served at 4-5 and 40-15 to level the match but played it too sloppy. Actually she deserved to lose.
When will she eve get a chance like this ?

pan
Jan 17th, 2003, 01:52 PM
oh MARLENE, what a bad, bad performance... :o
the whole match was that horrible! MARLENE played THAT bad, i became angry.

No need to let this thread die yet. ;)

Barbara has done well so far in doubles with Maria Vento-Kabchi. They have reached the 3rd round, where it will get tough against Lindsay/Lisa.

And 27-year-old doubles specialist Kirstin Freye has surprisingly reached the 3rd round as well. She won 2 tough 3-setters with her partner Dragana Zaric. :) Now Kim/Ai are waiting.

Maybe Kirstin should be considered for Fed Cup. Apart from Barbara, all German players are quite horrible in doubles. :o
But of course this won't happen, as no one will take notice about her because there isn't even a Fed Cup capatain at the moment.

last year the germans did well in doubles! BIANKA, MARTINA, JASMIN, ANGELIKA, MARLENE, BARABARA... they all had very good results!
