she was rusty and get lagged so I think we need to give her a bit of a break. I mean seriously what were people expecting for her first match  She started to play really good tennis in parts of the 2nd and 3rd. She will only get better as the week goes on. Im just so happy she is still playing and was able to get the win.

Dire footwork in the first set, standard up-and-down serving, UEs galore. She's fortunate Scheepers is a complete non-factor.

Not V's best tennis by a long shot, but I'm pleased she could get through a 2 hour match in 100 degree heat. The second set and most of the third set were solid though. :bounce:

Win's a win :) Venus came out really flat, but her energy really picked up in the 2nd set. Led 4-0 in the 3rd and really let Chani back into the match, she really should've closed it out much earlier.

Anyway, I think Chani is a tough match for her first match back especially in the heat and I'm glad Venus was able to dig deep and got to hit plenty of balls.

Chani  Really good effort on her part

Backhand looking fantastic best it's looked in years. Forehand looking rusty and more inconsistent than it has in years.

Other than that a standard Venus struggle with herself, sun in her eyes, doubles, mental walkabouts and first match in months.

Oh to be a Venus fan

The first set was predictably rusty. The forehand needs some major work, but the backhand was the shot of the day for her that won her the match. Great volleying too!

I enjoyed this match. :D

Chanelle had a pretty solid 1st set as Venus was trying to find her range. Venus really started to come alive in the 2nd set. Some great serving at times and her net play was really good. 15/16 good stat. That third set Venus ran away, but her form started going off. Chanelle had some chances but got tight her self. All in all some nice stuff. Venus 44/44 winners to errors. Nice to see Venus less than 24hrs after arrival play some decent tennis. Good luck to John against Kevin.

The forehand was dire but other than that, good match for her first time at Hopman.

Vee just wanted to give everyone something to talk about.

She made it through and that is what counts.

I cant watch Venus being a journey woman now it is far too sad to see. Scheepers was dictating far too many points

Took 2 hours and 15 minutes but great effort from Vee.Forehand was VERY off today, lots of errors, but the backhand was almost perfection, struck it very well.

She went three sets against Scheepers in Cincy too. meh. She'll get better.
Loved how she stepped it up though after losing the first set.

I only caught the first set and thought Scheepers was taking it right to Venus and played very well. The best set I have seen her play. Venus wasn't at her best in the set but was not terrible. Forehand was inconsistent but the rest of the game looked good. Venus generally works herself into form so expecting her to pick up as the week goes on.

Actually people are not giving Chanelle the credit she deserved in that first set, Venus was still playing a good level of tennis, Chanelle just played very well. Remember Venus actually only got to Perth yesterday, and Chanelle had 2 more matches played. Through sets 2 and 3 Venus' level really improved, her backhand and net play was in top form today, the forehand was rusty however in the third set she found her groove. Here is the the highlights on the singles, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ7lsxIP_GM Really enjoyed the match, and was a good match up for Venus, as Scheepers' got plenty of balls into play, giving Venus good court time. The second serve is improving, she was getting better angles on it. Overall a good start, and well done for her and John Isner winning 6-3 6-2 in doubles

It's highly unusual for Vee's backhand to be better than her forehand these days - that was the old days :oh:.

Venus backhand is always the stronger wing that rarely breaks down. The forehand has always had a history of breaking down and spraying errors.

Good, V !

So her serve is back to what it was pre-Na Li Cincinnati 2012, it increases her chance at the AO :).

Just watched the highlights, decent stuff from Venus!
Movement was average, some weak serves and fh wasn´t that great but also some nice winners, good net play, bh was on fire it seems, not too bad!
Hope she can improve with more matches and stays healthy for Melbourne, good to see her playing some matches before the AO at least! :cheer:

Venus arrived in Australia just 24 hours before playing this match. Makes sense she was rusty and jet lagged.

Venus looked good though. Thank god she's ditched those rose-pattern FUGLY dresses and she's started to wear nicer ones.

She didn't start moving her feet, especially off the forehand until the second set. After that, it was all passable. Backhand was electric in that final set though.
